I think removing the battery top keeps the manufacturers from cheaping out on the assembly. I have seen other KZbinrs criticize construction quality and the manufacturers made improvements on future releases, so yes, disassembly helps the consumer and should be included in your assessments. Thanks Tom for doing these tests, you and Jasonoid are really good at this.

I agree. Do the testing and be honest about the results. Then give them to someone that can use them rather than destroying a battery for clicks and likes.

I don't agree. Cutting them open has really shown the types of build quality we are working with. Some of these "budget" batteries have had *very* poor build quality with sub-standard cells and we would have no idea without a break-down. A couple of reviewers cutting open their batteries could save 100's or even 1000's of us from buying some garbage. Donate the the cut-up battery and let someone have fun with it and put it back together.

I would say, don’t destroy a perfectly good battery, but that being said, I would be fascinated to see why this battery has such a compact profile with the same amp hours in such a small package. I would want to see how they did it, what corners they cut if any. As far as in general, what you do with your excess products I think you should give it away to your audience when you hit a particular milestones of your account or someone on your Patreon if you have one.

I voted in the last poll to not chop the batteries up but in this case I support the decision to do a tear down because these LiTime minis are not the standard prismatic cells but pouch cells and I wanted to see the interior arrangement of pouches, BMS board etc. PS I have already purchased a mini and expect its arrival in 5 days. Thanks for asking your viewers.

I just finished my 11th home built power box... bolted to the floor in my old GMC camper van between the front seats. 300 amp hr Chins, 2000 watt Renogy inverter, 40 amp Renogy MPPT, BT-2 blue tooth, Renogy battery meter, 400 watts of panels on top, USB and 12 volt outlets, proper fuses. My friend's 8 month old Ecoflow in his motorhome went dead one morning. They sent him another within 2 weeks. I have all kinds of spare inverters, MPPT units, parts galore if anything fails. My friend uses his EcoFlow to power up electronic for music gigs and really depends on battery power.

Love the “Jaguar ” fuse box reference. As a diy guy, I’m a shade tree mechanic as well. Without a doubt the British Leyland electoral systems are a nightmare for me in the old days . Don’t chop them up. Most don’t even know what they’re looking at. I purposely didn’t buy my lipo4’s with the heating element. Wasn’t worth the extra cost as I do not charge at night and not that many days is it below freezing in my local. I just flip a switch to start or stop the charging.

Over the years, I had 8 Triumph Spitfires and 6 of the GT-6 cars. Lucas sucked. When I needed a heater fan switch from the British Only wrecking yard, out of 10 cars, all would be missing the heater switch. Many other electrical parts were similar. I bought these cars cheap...2 things ALWAYS wrong....rear axle U-joints would fail and knock badly as you stopped and the tiny joke of a clutch disk would be worn out.

You have the heart of a nomad. The community has a solid reputation of helping others in need. It reflects your heart and desire to help people with limited needs. When you are on BLM camping and obtain a way to harness energy from the sun, it is a life changer and makes life more manageable. You could make a follow up video with the people you have given them and see how the battery is holding up. It's too bad they cannot send you two for your research; one to open and the other to pay it forward.

The teardown does make or break my purchasing decision. I don't buy unless I know whats under them. I bought these minis because I saw the build quality of the pouch cells and that put me at ease. I think most people could still make use of these batteries if you used a chisel to pop the top off. I know some aren't so easy and require power tools for choppin

Hey professor! I know I'm late to the party on giving advice for the disassembly of the batteries you review, but I think having a look inside of certain batteries could be useful. If it's a standard size, standard weight battery for it's ratings, it's likely to have standard prismatic Lifepo4 cells inside and probably one of the standard BMS units used in most of the drop in LiFePO4 batteries. It's only when something new or special comes in that opening it up to see how it works or what cells and BMS are being used that opening the top could give you and your viewers valuable information. You are always going to have the crowd that won't buy anything unless they see what exactly is being used inside the battery, and you could absolutely still do that on every battery without compromising the seal around the top of the battery. It will require extra work and a little extra investment on your part, but it wouldn't be difficult to do. To start, you need to stick the battery in a deep freezer for about 24 hours. This will make the silicone or glue used to seal the top of the battery very brittle. From there, you should be able to take something like a putty knife and a dead blow hammer, and break the seal around the top of the battery without damaging anything at all. Now you are inside the battery with no damage. To get it back together with a functional seal around the top again, you can refreeze the original sealant and scrape off what remains on the top and on the battery casing, which will allow you to cleanly reseal the battery to have it's original weather protection and water resistance. As a backup, you could always get a plastic welder and go around the top of the battery after resealing, and you will be guaranteed to have a water tight seal again. Honestly, the new sealant you choose to go around the top of the battery should be enough to make it waterproof again, but if you really want to make sure it's waterproof, the plastic welder would certainly finish the job and make it perfect.

The good news is that more brands are selling 100Ah mini form factor now, though I haven't seen it spread to 200Ah yet. Some aren't even calling their mini a mini, so I advise checking the dimensions in photos and descriptions to find some that the marketers are describing poorly, hence are likely to be cheaper and in stock. I scored one that way this week. Amazon recommended a Lightning Deal to me on an Eco-Worthy, and sure enough, it was mini form factor dimensions without saying so. So I grabbed it for $246 shipped with 10 minutes to spare. All the usual suspects (Redodo, Power Queen, LiTime, etc) for $350-$370, occasionally discounted to $310ish. So I'm pretty happy with the Lightning Deal. This is going to be one crazy November for 12V fridges, LiFePO4 batteries, power stations, and (you heard it here first) vehicle scan tools which might be as low as half what they were last year.

Good review. Iv been thinking a lot about why they might not put low temp cut off and the only thing I can come up with is that in an extreme environment where that battery could potentially save your life they rather have it give up its life in stead.. however, a manual self heating function could make sense as it would not take much to heat a small footprint battery like this IF the case was well insulated.

I like seeing it chopped up to see the build quality. Maybe if you can find another person to link to who chops it then leave it whole, but if you can't then show the innards.

Dissection of a battery can be all important in ascertaining the overall build quality and bms quality independently. Therefore, I vote to dissect at all costs..........

👍 I remember way back then submarine surplus batteries were cheap. You buy the lot next door for your battery backups.... lol

I don't plan on doing any boondocking, just want to run some lights and the ice box when driving. What size battery do I need? Rv has a residential 20 cu/ft ice box. Great video.

Instead of cutting open the battery why not drill a few holes to scope it in a few places with a camera (endoscope from Amazon). Small holes would be pretty easy tape or glue patches over. Even if you cut the top off, ABS isn’t too hard to glue - it’s not like polyethylene. Can buy strips to make patches with. Someone could make a video on gluing the top back on batteries that Hobo cut apart!

Some bright person could really sell a well designed temperature based 12v 150 amp relay that is packaged as an 'inline' device which can simply be attached between any battery and the charging source. This general purpose relay is not difficult in concept, but sourcing the components and putting them into a robust dustproof and water resistant package would take a little work.

@hobotech i really think you should give them to people that really need them you say you have so many you don't know what to do with them. I just found your channel i was searching for a way to use power tool batteries for some how storing energy im so confused on what i need though you're channel has been amazing i simply thought you could just batteries and panels not knowing about charge controller and everything else included. I didn't realize how much everything is it has blown my mind i cannot afford all these things tho i desperately need them to make my camper safe for my family. And have enough power to cook and shower and cool these insane temps in the summer here in Louisiana. Thank you for all the knowledge and yeah instead of wasting them there are families struggling times are hard seriously. Thanks again have a wonderful evening.

I'm team NO CHOP. Please don't add to consumer waste by ruining a perfectly good battery that someone could use for a decade or more. Just my opinion. Keep up the awesome reviews.

It is nice to know about quality of components, as well as assembly, but maybe open up one of each battery brand.

battery charging and discharging time testing is only accurate if the battery is fully back to room temperature after each test. The exterior case may show a slightly elevated temperature, however the internal temperatures on the cells will be significantly higher. Unless the battery has external thermocouple ports to read these temps, letting it sit for 5 min does next to nothing. It would need to sit for several hours for accurate time testing.

Thank you for your review. I think it's great that you share the batteries with people who need them. I think the battery should stay intact so someone can benefit from it. As always, I like the information you share.

I couldnt care less about what it looks like in the "budget" batteries, but I would want to hold "premium" manufacturers to a higher standard. So those are worth checking on.

I would say no to chopping up good batteries just to look inside. Now if the battery suddenly goes on a rampage then it should be cut open to see what we might expect to happen to our batteries. I am wondering though about using two of these mini's in series for extended service on a four wheeled handicapped scooter for my wife. I have just the right amount of space to replace the two 12V X 35A SLA batteries that are on the scooter, but like your poll I have gotten both pros and cons feedback on using LiFePO4 vs lead/acid batteries. Any thoughts or suggestions ???

No, do not cut them open. It’s a waste for the environment. Most viewers wouldn’t care once they see the insides once or twice. Your format is perfect as it is. And it’s cool that you donate. Nice way to pay it forward.

If KZbinr's chop the top off, there are no longer "Secrets" to what is inside. Seems like a compelling reason for the manufacturer to do an indepth "open case" expose' of their batteries. There - we can have it both ways - independent testing - and manufacturer insights. Cheers
