Liam Byrne's arrest and the Gardai's encrochat failings

The Encrochat phone hack which has been the catalyst for the sensational arrest of Kinahan Cartel lieutenant Liam Byrne on Majorca this week has netted hundreds of criminals their cash, guns and drugs for police forces across Europe.
But Ireland’s stance on the multi agency offensive described as the greatest blow to organised crime in decades has been more than curious.
Despite a raft of convictions already made and hundreds more before the courts, Ireland has yet to charge one person using Encrochat intelligence it received from Dutch and French police instead deciding to remain an outlier.
Nicola speaks with Niall Donald about the strange decisions made by An Garda Siochana during a crucial opportunity against criminals, about the lack of accountability around orders to withhold information from specialist units and about the future of a force whose police plan appears to be stuck in the past.

I have for a very long time viewed An Garda Siochana as a bunch of lazy bungling amateurs when it comes to international crime. I can only imagine how they are laughed at by the FBI etc. Now, however, I view them with deep distrust. Hard not to after such blatant incompetence. Makes me wonder if they are actually interested in combating crime.

The encro chat was hacked and messages investigated for information and intelligence. The news got out and people were aware that it wasn’t safe no more. But people were still using their phone still to communicate and organise their activities. Even though a message was sent to all encro phones saying that it wasn’t secure no more. So why would they still use the phone still to communicate and organise their network.

A lot of the problems throughout this time with Encro Chat etc and the irish Authority's not acting on live data feeds coming from European partners was because of the Graham Dwyre high court challenge against the state who used mobile data collected in evedance to snare him. Unfortunately the European courts had followed the line, of this being a form of unfair entrapment. Guessing we we stuck between a rock & a hard place to use this shared data from France, Belgium and the UK at the time, and perhaps continue to do so
