Emma Raducanu has excellent gtoundstrokes and what she does especially well on the forehand is keep the swing infront of her body. Notice how her arm or racket dosen't go so far behind her body like most WTA players. Her short preperation infront of her body reduces the potential errors that a big swing can create for example getting caught late on fast deep incoming balls. She has an excellent backhand which you can see very well at 4:55 onwards. She has a nice low to high swing which creates alot of topspin and consistency. She also has the ability to also flatten it out and create some pace 5:52. Also notice how she prepares with her shoulders as soon as she knows where the ball is going and moves towards the ball while already prepared to swing, also seen at 5:52. This allows her to not be late especially with fast and deep incoming shots. Many times, recreational players will run towards the ball first, then prepare, then swing which will cause you to rush your swing, hit a less quality ball, and feel like you have less time. Instead... Prepare as soon as you see if you will get a forehand or a backhand and then move to the ball. Of course this is not possible in all instances but this is the ideal way to hit groundstrokes. Please leave a 👍 if you enjoyed and consider subscribing for more Court Level Tennis coming soon! 🎾

the 2 timestamps you posted are not good examples at all
@LiamApilado
@LiamApilado 2 жыл бұрын
@@Lanky009 at 4:55 you can see how she is hitting over the highest part of the net requiring alot of topspin, therefore a low to high swing trajectory. Whereas the other timestamp isn't the best example of a flat backhand but it requires a flatter stroke as she isn't hitting with much net clearance but getting great depth over the longest part of the court. This requires more penetration and power, thus, a flatter backhand :)

At 2:25 Emma does a forehand cha cha with correct fretwork, thereafter she takes too many short shuffle or adjustment steps. Just something to work on but she is talented.

I don't know much about tennis but that is something I've noticed about Emma that her footwork isn't the best or efficient. Too often I've seen her stuck or just sitting or stretching too much because of her poor anticipation of the ball.

What you are saying really does not matter that's stylistic some players take a lot of small adjustment steps typically these players have high intensity in their playstyle. Go watch nadal hit a standstill forhand winner he takes a shit ton of small steps more than most players. Meanwhile Federer takes only the perfect steps that's required. Thats stylistic and individual. Is Nadal wrong the guy with the most GS? No of course not. The fundamental is having good active footwork and that's expressed differently in tennis because its so individual just like all players serve differently.

Interesting to watch. I've noticed a lot of the younger players on the female tour start out fearless and just go for their shots. As they become more "serious" and strive for wins and improved ranking, they seem to look a lot less relaxed on the ball. I guess this is only natural if you are trying to learn and adapt/improve aspects of your game. More than often you need to go backwards before you progress! Some good fundamentals in Emma's game....she seems to be going for less air on her forehand and less clearance over the net. That's a worry, as under pressure she'll likely start netting more shots. I can see the logic as sometimes her forehand sits up too high and her opponents can crush it back. It's a risky strategy though.
@zenhalimana
@zenhalimana 2 жыл бұрын
You really know your stuff! Agreed - especially on the fearlessness bit. I guess they have nothing to lose and everything to gain when they're younger. As they get older and start winning they might feel like they have to 'protect' their titlte/ranking and start being more conservative as a result.

Playing as the underdog is very convenient in all sports.. tennis is no exception. Of course when the big checks come rolling in with famous brands and media coverage is all over you is impossible to play like the underdog.. quite the opposite, now you may find yourself suffering from imposter syndrome. I think Emma could be a victim of that, combined with some physical problems caused by pushing her body to far. She is obviously talented and has the work ethics to back it up. Hopefully she can stay fit long enough to get some good results. Now, as far as "going for shots" all you have to do is compare practice sessions with match play, there is already a big diference in pace, doesn't matter the player. Even Roger, Nadal, et caterva, hit with way more pace on average while practicing than playing. When you watch 4.0/4.5 amateurs you see this phenomena extrapolated. Tennis is mastering controlled power, specially in big points. Those at the very top are the best at doing just that.

There’s something about her forehand that don’t feel quite right to me. Is she trying the ATP style with compact take back? There are reasons for most women to have WTA forehand due to having less shoulder strength and leverage, ie narrower built.

The backswing seems closer to ATP. Did she have a WTA backswing before? The forward swing elbow being closer to body, still makes it more WTA style, ie more usage of hips than upper body.

There is no reason why a female can't use the ATP style forehand. Most female athletes have wide shoulders and narrower hips very similar to males. Emma is a prime example. The generalization that WTA women have narrower shoulders and wide hips that some coaches use is non-sense. It's just these females develop their strokes at an early age and they don't change much because they don't need to. They play other females with WTA forehands and they are not pushed. Males on the other hand are forced to drop that big swing if they want to compete. The ATP is superior in that you can generate a heavier ball with pace and quick execution. And best of all, it's requires much less energy. Remember that shoulder strength is not the key to the stroke, it's racket head speed. Emma, like many young WTA players, has been coached away from the WTA forehand. Good for her. I hope the entire women's tour drops that old forehand technique.

As as non-professional club tennis player in Melbourne, Australia, I assess Raducanu skills to be approx men's pennant grade 5 or grade 6 in the local competition here. Pennant tennis here in Melbourne is played on a court surface of crushed red brick (en-tout-cas) ... not hardcourts as in this video. Anyway, well done Emma.
