Attempt #2 was not planned well. In attempt #1, humans mostly spent time with the other humans, not demons pretending to be human. Vicki and Angelique are very good in their human roles, but Chris couldn't think of ways to handle Eleanor and kept bailing whenever she wanted to talk to him. In #1, Chidi was happy with the Good Place until he had to deal with the dilemma of making Eleanor 'good'. Tahani was mostly happy with tGP except having a silent soul mate. Her 'lifestyle' was the same as on Earth. Jason was mostly happy in his 'bud hole' getting whatever he wanted. They all believed they were in paradise, with small glitches that caused torture for them. And even then, they mostly attributed that to it being Michael's first attempt as an architect. Attempt #2 immediately paired Chidi with a soul mate he didn't want - everyday constant torture. Tahani was dealing with a living situation she hated, with a soul mate that was even less ideal for her than a silent monk. Jason was bored silly and having Luang as his constant companion deprived him of his private space, where he could be himself. They were all very unhappy, very fast. Eleanor was the only human that started off in a somewhat similar situation as the first attempt, and the note had her questioning things.
@MrPassion4truth3 жыл бұрын
Good analysis, except that Chidi got a stomachache 30 minutes after meeting Eleanor in season 1. If you really look at Chidi in season 1, he was constantly under stress in every episode, because he spent 75% of his time with Eleanor who was always either doing bad things or annoying him. He had to constantly remind her of what it meant to be a good person, which Eleanor really didn't care that much about. Chidi assumed that Eleanor was the source of his misery, see episode 5, but for some unexplained reason, he didn't want to abandon her, even though in episode 5, he threatened to move out of Eleanor's house.

I feel like the note helped but I also think the main issue was Michael overcorrected. He kept them apart but made things so terrible for each of them that it never really stood a chance.
@chrissmith60974 жыл бұрын
Exactly. The first attempt was fantastic in feeling only slightly off from the beginning. But piling on the individual tortures and not giving them anyone to talk to or bond with caused things to fall apart instantly.
@TwotoTenth4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, Michael was definitely sloppy here. For instance, his plan for Chidi has potential (making Chidi choose between two possible soulmates) but then goes sideways right away because the choice is so obvious that even Chidi can decide in like an hour. If he'd been given two options that both had good points and bad points, there would be weeks of agony available - and THEN you can pull the switcheroo if and when he finally chooses.

@@TwotoTenth Letting Vicky be one of the two choices for Chidi would have settled her complaints of being sidelined.

Don’t worry, anyone who’s remotely into men has that reaction to shirtless Chris. And probably a few who aren’t into men at all. This might be my favourite season opener of any show ever. It’s so clever how they weaved the stories together, only to have the rug pulled out from under you by resetting everything at the end. Love it, I’m so excited for the rest!

I'm a sucker for non-linear / multiple-perspective storytelling, so I really liked this episode. Also, after S1 some people worried that S2 would just be another whole season of the same thing-kind of boring-and they managed to do all of S1 again in one two-part episode. And since you've already seen the next one (which is often numbered 2x03 since the premiere is two Chapters) you know that they really break the S1 mold by then!
@chrissmith60974 жыл бұрын
This show and Lost could do the non-linear/multiple perspectives really well, because they knew how to give you new information. Most shows, however, bore me when they do this because they just reiterate what we already know.

You're right. Inviting everyone *except* Eleanor and Tahani to the party would've been great torture for each of them; they both spend a lot of brainpower on their status relative to other people.
@chrissmith60974 жыл бұрын
It’s interesting that Michael only loses his temper with the other demons, which was unnerving and scary by itself. But he never once treated the humans that way, and mostly seems amused by them. I’ve seen the theory that this is actually Michael’s Bad Place (to clarify, a bad place neighborhood created solely to torture Michael who is unaware of the torture) and with an episode like this I can see how people could believe that even if it’s never confirmed later.

It’s quite cool that these four people were chosen to torture each other, but they ended up making one another better.

The funny thing is ...if you go back to season 1, you would realize that Eleanor catches on to the fact that Tihani isn't sincerely a nice person *very* early. The season 1 finale gives a whole new meaning to so many things in season 1. (1) as the show progresses, it becomes more and more obvious that Tihani is a very jealous person (2) Michael probably deliberately let Tihani see the score chart, to play up her jealousy. (3) all of the catastrophe events are created to make Eleanor feel more guilty (4) Michael's intimate knowledge of torture and the detail with which he describes them.
@amemelia3 жыл бұрын
(2) he absolutely set up the screen so she'd see. Tahani is so desperate for validation by people externally because she was never given it by her parents and constantly compared. She saw herself as good and wanted the validation to prove it (being rated highly) imagine being such a good person you're one of the best in heaven, now THATS validation
