In today's episode of Makeup and Mythology, I cover the second-ever Chinese myth for this series: The Legend of the White Snake. Basically, a snake (Bai Suzhen) and a human (Xuxian) fall in love, and a monk (Fahai) is really NOT happy about it because he thinks their love is against the laws of nature. In reality, we know it's because he's mad about some vomit. A green snake (Xiaoqing) is also in this story, and she is really freaking rad.

Every time I hear this story presented, she is referred to, in the beginning, as: "A white snake" or even "An Immortal White Snake" as if this is something that already exists and we're supposed to know about it, and this is just one specific story about one. Is there more information about this? Is a white snake a kind of supernatural creature in Chinese legend? Or maybe even just a type of snake known as a white snake?

So from my understanding, in Chinese legends, animals are able to cultivate (Taosim, usually) into supernatural beings and take on human forms. For example in a lot of Chinese dramas, whenever a beautiful woman seduces a man, she might be accused of being a "fox spirit" because it's generally thought that foxes make the most beautiful women. So to answer your question, snakes aren't special by any means- any animal can do the thing! Hope this helps :)

I actually enjoyed the 2019 series, As for the Jet li I agree it was kinda mei, Well as the animated film...Thank you to not only did I find the 1992 series on youtube which I'll give watch. there is also a version uploaded onto youtube called The destiny of the white snake... have no idea when it aired or how good.. but its free on youtube I'll give it a little watch
