The Problem With Jon Stewart

The Problem With Jon Stewart

Күн бұрын

Thanks to the Dominion Voting Systems v. Fox News filing, we now know what we’ve always believed is true: Fox News will do or say anything to retain their power, even if it means lying - over and over and over again - to their viewers. The question is, will they ever be held accountable? We’re joined this week by RonNell Anderson Jones, Professor of Law at the University of Utah, for a lively discussion about defamation law and the possibility that Fox News might actually have to face the music.

The tobacco industry what do a lot of legal hurdles to end up having to comply with" the master settlement" which do regulation forced stop using ads and promotions that would directly Target children. Starting from the news reports and that time about how Joe Camel was cooler and more known by children than Mickey Mouse. There are all kinds of rules in that settlement that the tobacco industry's have to follow here in the United States, all the way down to local County municipalities when it comes to branding, placement, promoting accessibility and taxing. Tobacco industry sense has still lobbying billions of dollars to smaller municipalities to be able to leverage the ability to sell their Wares. He ''makes his living speaking and commenting on public matters of concern for a living''. He is a living legend to his most adoring fans. To others he is a comedian with more honesty and integrity than corporate media. Is he really by his own admission? I'd say no based on his track record since Obama. I'm not alone. Thank goodness.

@@2906justblaze Yes, it is sandwiched in there when they switch from their "daytime" actual fact-based news programming to their nighttime programming. It is something to the effect that the nighttime programming is presented as entertainment and is not to be "confused" with "news." What was one of the big scams from the start was that it is all presented on news-type sets by people dressed in professional "news-style" costuming. I am old and it all reminded me back when the fictional doctor on TV called Marcus Welby had a higher believability factor than people's family doctor or the line "I'm not a doctor but I play one on TV." I mean Trump symbolized all this to me and I have lost so many friends over the past 6+ years when they believed in the character that he built for himself that was so much stronger and believable than the provable fact of who he is and what he has done in his life. It's just time to die as I just give up now since I can't find a good husband (even though I am pretty loving and highly skilled) I have no more resources and no health insurance.

I remember vividly where I was, the time of day, and what I was driving the first time I heard the Report that Murdoch had won the right to lie under the banner of “Commentary Entertainment”. Awhile back I started telling people that “I feel like I’m living in a Sci-Fi depiction of a dystopian future”. Back in the day, when we stood in line at the supermarket checkout and read the cover of the National Enquirer, we chuckled, understanding what it was. When we watched Soylent Green, Running Man, Roller Ball, “V” For Vendetta, Demolition Man, and Blade Runner we smirked thinking those depictions of news broadcasts & media control could never be real. Today, for many people, the National Enquirer and FOX is the news. Corporations, Oligarchs, & Media are now running the show. During Sarah Huckabee Sanders Declaration after the SOTU address I suddenly felt like I was watching an updated version of Max Headroom. I felt like I was being fed the daily fix by a computer-generated depiction of a human being. I literally screamed “OMFG” The Sci-Fi writers weren’t depicting, they were predicting.

Take a drink every time she says "What FOX did is clearly CRIMINAL in many ways --- nevermind Defamation Lawsuits --- as it was clearly systemic FRAUD, and many people DIED because of Fox's lies, so that's MANSLAUGHTER galore.........and if they're not in cuffs already, than Law Enforcement in all 50 states need to be arrested for aiding and abetting". You didn't take a single drink either? JON KEEPS POINTING OUT THIS IS ALL CRIMINAL --- and every time, the ESTABLISHMENT atty goes back to CIVIL court and Defamation and refused to talk about how CRIMINAL all of it is! HE CALLS FOX A "CRIMINAL ENTERPRISE" (this is correct) and she CHANGES THE SUBJECT AGAIN, just like when he mentions RICO and other CRIMINAL statutes! You know why she wouldn't discuss it. (She owes her paycheck to....this same ESTABLISHMENT. ALL press do criminal fraud every day. EX: NYT's WMD stories, which they knew were false.)

All of our news media's are lying to the Americsn public. For example the 2 year long Russiagate lie pushed by MSNBC, & CNN. There's a reason why these networks ratings are falling...and it's not because the American people believe in them. It's all become a tool to divide & keep the country divided. MSNBC and CNN are no better and are biased to the left side. American people are getting tired of all of the corruption, lies and pointing of fingers.
@richardshalla

@Mary White I believe you are wrong. CNN and NBC are biased for sure, and may choose to ignore some stories that don't work well for their narrative but the are not complete lying companies. They are a news business and sensastionalizing the news helps keep people glued to the channel. That is their business model. Fox has built a monster they are trapped with now, the rage machine that are so addicted to it they don't want the truth, they want more rage.

What difference does it make? They lied because any time they did exhibit journalistic integrity or told news events with a high degree of accuracy that was unflattering or detrimental to the Republican Party, they significantly lost viewership. They understood that lying to their audience was the only way they could maintain their ratings and shareholder price, because if they didn't, their viewers would actively seek out the sources confirming their deeply held beliefs. When FOX called the state of Arizona for Biden in the 2020 election cycle (the first of any major networks to do so), they were confident in those results and were ultimately proven right. But in real time, Trump supporters lost their minds over what they perceived as a premature victory, and the network stammered their way through an apology to their audience, and then threw shade on their political correspondents who had correctly called the race. So even if they are compelled by the courts to issue such proclamations, FOX viewers will just slide further to the right to avoid that uncomfortable truth. It's the tail wagging the dog, where there's an appetite for confirmation bias, and despite knowing the utter lunacy of some of the claims being made by Trump and his associates, they didn't want to lose their sizeable portion of viewers to OAN and Newsmax who were also more than willing to spread equally contemptible lies.

Their viewers would probably come up with their own conspiracy about how this is just the big bad gubmint abusing its power to silence the truth. That would probably backfire, and actually reinforce their beliefs about the whole situation. You have to remember, their viewers don't just have different opinions, they're literally brainwashed. Their view of reality right now is a clinical delusion, and the main hallmark of a delusion is that no amount of evidence will change their beliefs. Fox News viewers are quite literally mentally ill, and I'm not saying that as a joke, or as an insult. If you want to know how bad it really is, do a little googling about cult deprogramming. It's really interesting on its own, but it will also give you insight in to what we're actually dealing with here. The first step towards breaking the delusion is to completely sever all stimuli that reinforce it, and we all know how widely available that crap is on the internet, even if fox were to taken off the air completely. This is honestly much worse than most people think, but the thing that gives hope for the future is that most millenials and gen z don't watch it.

Right?! Like, this may sound weird, but I mean it in the best of ways, she knows how to handle getting ran over. I mean, like, we all know how it goes with talk show hosts, theyll interject with a quip or jab, or when a thread has drawn a bit long they will jump in and redirect to a new thread sometimes a completely different stance to provide a more diverse conversation on the whole. But that means the guest might not be able to complete an entire thought. And thats okay, its not a bad thing, that is just how talk shows are. On TV there are time constraints, granted pod casts are a bit looser, but still there is an expected time frame and such. Ive seen guests on this show and others continue rolling on trying to keep the stick (the talking stick for those who remember those scouts stories) if you will, going on for 4 or 5 sentences while the host is trying to wrangle back their show. Professor Jones just absolutely rolls with it (probably a well honed virtue of being an educator, gotta let the kids think out loud if you want em to learn), she knows when to pump the brakes and let the host do their thing, and the best part is that she is off like a shot RIGHT ON the end of the question by the other speaker. Like no delay, no having to think about it, just BAM on it, and off she goes down a completely different tangent, no hesitation, staying completely engaged the whole time all without trying to take center stage, a perfect expert guest for an extended conversation. I really enjoyed listening to her explanations and descriptions, and the dynamic between her and Jon. Plus, shes friggin gorgeous (being a sapio, the intelligence, ability to articulate a complex thought effectively, and excitement for a nerdy in-depth topic has a lot of sway there. A body is only as pretty as the brain attached to it 😉) and adorable , so that certainly doesnt hurt.😅

@@totorosghost rule #1: everyone has biases. Anyone who says otherwise is selling something. The trick is to do ones best to remain open to non-judgmental non-adversarial conversation over a given topic in the interest of arriving at mutually beneficial result for all parties involved. On that note, its okay to disagree, however that shouldn't lead to hatred. Its entirely possible to be soured on being around someone, but I have had plenty of intense arguments with people and then we still go out to the party later and have fun, or bar, or run a few rounds of halo online. For the life of me I'll never wrap my head around people who speak of others as if from a place of authority yet have not spent minute one attempting to understand their position much less have any first hand experience with that person's life experiences. Or worse are threatened by it, as if understanding someone's view point and what has lead them to their stance universally means they must then change their initial point of view. More people need to understand that if that concept is terrifying maybe that initial view point is the problem.... That being said, I do not disagree that Professor Jones is a great guest and has good chemistry with Jon 😁

@@zombieregime Having said this, don't you think Jon now and to some degree when he was on the Daily Show, is judgemental, adversarial and speaks as if in a place of authority yet understand little of a person's life experiences? His interview with Ayaan Hirsi Ali comes to mind. Also I think this applies to black guests and hosts on Fox. He said fox doesnt like black people. This could also apply to any ''white'' people as Jon has interviews in which he and a select few attempt to explain white people's experiences without regard to ancestry and individual experiences. I agree their chemistry is good.

She points out he's not a journo. He says he's not and never claimed to be fair and balanced. He's not news, but he comments on it. I'd be a little more skeptical based on this video alone. I have been since his Obama days. Thankfully I'm not alone. I do hope justice is served. Now if YT would just stop censoring reasonable comments, we all could have a fruitful discussion and a healthy democracy. I'm guessing they have other plans.

The interesting thing here is that Jon is focusing on the larger and more ethical issues w fox at large while the prof keeps focusing down on the case issues at hand. He wants to take it to another level and she's being a lawyer just focused on the actual case

I had a vague notion that some of what you explained was the case in this situation. I do like learning things... thanks for providing a reasonable detailed and informative video. It wasn't an "attack piece" it was simply a discussion of the facts as we currently know them.

You are doing such a wonderful job with this project! Shining a light and hearing a voice of reason (Who knew it would come from Jon Stewart?) just gives me hope for our country and reminds me that i am NOT crazy after all the gaslighting and manipulation of truth with the goal of gaining our support and our votes in favor of the corporate agenda by the mainstream media.

Yeah normally I'm really entertained by Jon's interruptions and tangents, but often here I really just wanted to hear what she had to say. No Jon, we can't just throw them in jail for espionage like the Iranians do. But I'd really like to hear what the options might be for the court if the explicit purpose of "clearing the record" in defamation suits isn't deemed sufficient. Can it somehow be expanded beyond court documents? Can they force a retraction on-air? Can jurisprudence impose some semblance of the fairness doctrine on Fox? She almost manages to bring the discussion to that question at least 3 times before Jon cuts her off.
