Loreena McKennitt has a lovely song called "All Soul's Night" that is about bonfires for Samhain and the spiritualism of this time of year. Her adaptation of Yeats's "The Stolen Child" is great, too, particularly the live version.

I really must gen up on Yeats...my teens were dominated by the undertones, thin Lizzy, Flock of Seagulls and Tears for fears and Seamus Heaney's writing..bit biased as a Derry man...

Well done sir, the Bard of the ages...what a well researched and told tale...all that was missing was a warm fire and a few drams...but no dramas...as a well known Irishman ( Dave Allen) was wont to say...may your God go with you...keep well and safe..E

Good explanation. My favorite so far, of this topic. Clear and meaningful original motives, and clear about how the early practices became precedents or foundations for today's Halloween, which I wondered about. Thank you.

now i know the feel of Samhain from the ages. it’s not just a dress-up time. everything means something. the joining of our loves who passed on are really there. lots of candles will have to do for a fire (as i live in New York). but will leave milk by my door. maybe even make a gourd jack o’ lantern. thanks again. :) 🌾🍁🌻🍏🧖🏻‍♀️🧖🏽🎃

To Dear Mr Wolf, I don’t know which side of the wall I am. I’m just bog basic scot diaspora. Fraser, if you don’t mind. I don’t make shit up. I’ve tried in the past and it always whacks me in the arse. So there you go. When I saw that tv series Outlander, I laughed my head off. I thought Fraser was boring(as a kid) How dare they wear my plaid. We have several. I can wear them with aplomb. My favourite is sporting but I don’t mind the others either.

I'm Christian but the truth I know about samahin (soween) it was just a way for them to honor their ancestors and loved ones and unfortunately over the centuries became demonized its sad to me it is no different than Dia los Muertos (day of the dead) that mexicans/aztecs celebrate and I also honor all souls day too the Christianized version
