I'm the lone Democrat in my family. I uninvited all my family except my youngest son. I was sitting here today after cleaning for Thanksgiving and thinking about it. I don't have to get up at 4 am to start cooking. I don't have to make special dishes for my three spoiled rotten selfish grandkids. I can cook as little or as much as I want . No doing dishes all afternoon. But especially not hearing political talk. You know what , I just might take my son out to eat. I've canceled Christmas too.

Absolutely not going to a gathering of my late mother's extended family. Her surviving sibling and his wife are 90. They had four children; two are educated and Democrats, two are MAGA. Especially obnoxious is the husband of one, who has always been patronizing and condescending to me although I'm older with a better job (and female!), and the spouse of a second cousin (a law enforcement officer). I'm just too angry to put up with their Trump crap, so is my husband, and my elderly aunt and uncle (far from MAGA!) don't need to be upset if any of those guys say a f***ing MAGA word to me. Yet if your fave ball team wins a championship... your life doesn't really change. The team captain doesn't rule over you - you're not entrusting them with power. Politics is life and death. Its not a game. Its often wrought with tough choices that have real outcomes. That we've allowed it to degrade in to "winning" is the problem. It is the cover we give politicians to game us, lie, and encourage corruption. It allows them to gain power and wealth without putting in the hard work of making hard choices and explaining those choices to us. And being accountable for poor choices. Its never "just" politics. ​@davidgray1515 I think it depends on the child. We only spanked our daughter once, and that was when she followed her cousins down to the lake, (and potential drowning), after being told not to. We made sure to tell her she was being spanked because of putting herself in danger, not because we were angry with her. We were afraid for her safety. She was a sensitive enough person that the threat of our disapproval and disappointment in her was enough to keep her behavior in line. She's now grown, and still a wonderful, compassionate person.

And someone writing to another channel came out with the single best thing ever, that somehow hadn't crossed most of our minds: "I ain't going". ... That blew my mind. Right. We just... don't have to actually go. There ain't no law saying we have to. It sucks. It certainly doesn't create 'deeper relationships' to fight it out every freaking year. We aren't making any difference in opening up minds or getting any maga family members to crack open a book or to 'trust their lying eyes'. So.... friendsigiving, friendschristmas, enjoying a quiet day with our doggo... we got options.

This Thanksgiving, ask your MAGA relatives which Trump policies they are most is looking forward to. Don’t argue with them about them, instead prompt them to go on and on about how great they will be. Just bide your time. You’ll have four years to keep reminding them about them. If Trump doesn’t follow through on his promises, you can keep reminding them how he lied to them. If Trump actually follows through, you have four years to remind them of all the negative consequences that result from said policies. The more enthusiasm and bragging you can get from them this Thanksgiving, the harder their words will come back to bite them. After all, you deserve at least a little joy over the next four years.

My kid sister who lives/lived in Texass told me that Jan. 6, 2021 was just some peaceful tourists on a sightseeing trip. It was a shock from which I could not recover. She had been one of my very few favorite people, but it turned out I did not know who she was. It hurt. It probably always will.

I’m a fully unified blue family. I do not know how I got so damn lucky. I’ve cried tears of gratitude over this many times. But what I actually want to say is we all have to take each other in and form new family. We have to intentionally build community among each other, it how we survive and even thrive. Plus you know a blue thanksgiving is a MUCH more fun time than a red one.
