The biggest issue is (1) future mitigation of fires and extreme winters in CA, and (2) Insurance backing out "for reasons" while the Housing Marketing (others) take negative advantage of the people. It has already begun. The fire is natural, but this was very much mitigatable if the branch of CA State wasn't a failure in infrastructure and in leadership.

If it helps, Trae--last weekend, I was driving my elderly mom home from some errands when a teenager going way too fast on an electric scooter collided with a car and got thrown over the hood. My mom, of course, jumped out to help while I called 911 because we've both worked in education and basically have a hardwired Hurt Kid Mode--but three or four drivers behind us stopped, too, and they got out to help as well. Only one car passed the scene without stopping. People applied first aid, directed traffic, called the kid's mom for him, stayed with the driver--everyone just wanted to help, and they did so calmly and effectively. An ambulance arrived within minutes, the kid was transported to a trauma unit, and according to the paramedics, he'll probably be okay eventually, thanks to his helmet. All that was in southern California, ironically, and the air still smelled pretty smoky at the time, even though we were many miles from the evacuation zones. So in answer to your question about whether people would check the politics of a car-crash victim before helping ... apparently not this time. I hope that brightens your day a little.

I live here. The last MAGA person I know IRL has been my mechanic for a lifetime. I contacted him about my hybrid’s first service and he responded with two political rants. First contact we’ve had in months. He then went on to say the wildfires were deliberately caused by Democrats in order to make way for high density housing. He said he had two friends that were Democrats in Pacific Palisades that lost their home that would confirm this. I know he’s lying to me and I know he knows he’s lying to me, but I didn’t press him on that other than calling it pure bullshit. I said I want to be in the room when he says this out loud to their face. I told him how badly I feel for him; that he has gone this far to repeat such a disgusting thing during a crisis when he knows better. But that’s where we are. There was a fire in WA state in 2001 that burned over a fire crew, killing 4 of them. They had a van and a crew cab pickup parked on the road, separated by about 50 feet, IIRC. The pickup was destroyed, but the only damage to the van was the plastic license plate frame melted a little bit.

Yes, oddities often happen with natural events. Also, some tree species evolved to survive wildfires that occur naturally to clear out old dead organic material and make way for new growth, especially when their cones need fire to release seeds. Differences in building materials can cause some sections to burn hotter and more thoroughly. Willful ignorance is a sad thing.

Apparently you have no concept of 'fire weather and mapping' that others in that fire camp kept track of nor did you bother to ask anyone knowledgeable. At the Sunlight Basin fire camp I worked in 1979 in Montana, a thermal column started up nearby just after I got to the camp. One of the fire bosses noted my alarmed glances at this "chimney" of flame and smoke punching up past 20,000 feet and told me not to worry, it wasn't going to come this way. And it didn't. They explained that fire behavior depends on terrain, moisture, fuel and regional weather trends (both wind and rain) and their interactions. These have both micro- and macro-influences on fire behaviour, and the dynamic regional weather is the most dynamic factor.

I donated to the American Red Cross of California and to World Central Kitchen. The Red Cross shows up in force for people whose homes have burned down. It is a great organization. And World Central Kitchen feeds people and most importantly the firefighters. Both are reputable and the money you give goes to the people you intend to help.

Los Angeles has the chance now to start doing what should have been done decades ago- get rid of overhead electricity poles and put the wiring underground. My Los Angeles neighborhood (a small eight block area) for some reason has underground wiring that I did not notice until I called an electrician out for some inside problem and he pointed it out to me. The previous two years both had record rainfall. My house flooded multiple times, and I live at the top of a hill. So all the brush grew thick and tall, and then when this dry weather hit it all turned into kindling.
