Western history of WW2 in the three decades following the end of the war minimized or obscured both the Soviet contribution to the war, or which put the Soviet Union in a favorable light. As a consequence, among most Westerners, especially Americans, their historical understanding of the war, and of the Soviet Union, is largely fantastical.

The biggest difference is that these films were shot with actors who themselves were already Veterans of that war at that time. They didn't even have to play, they went through it all themselves. The most offensive thing is that in the West the Eastern Front is called the "Unknown War", although it was there for the first time that German troops suffered a major defeat near Moscow and after the Soviet Wars drove the Fascists all the way to Berlin, simultaneously liberating almost half of the world. But now, look at what is happening in the modern world, how the countries of the former Soviet Union forget history, demolish monuments to the Hero of that War and are already beginning to forget the real history. Why I am Russian, I can tell you for the battles of Americans during WWII and not only. Now think about who is sitting at the top of Western and European politicians. Which allow or even push people to forget history. Maybe it's time to think that the fascists have come to power again and for a long time, they are all sitting in corporations and all this time they have been learning to wage another war. They called it Democracy and turned people into consumers for several generations, so that in the future the people simply became a brainless consumer and could not oppose anything.
@black10872
@black10872 Жыл бұрын
@@NikitaZhadan First things first, these actors LOOK TOO YOUNG in the film to be WW2 veterans. WW2 in the 1960s was already 20 years ago. So by all accounts.... those young looking actors should be in their late 40s to mid 50s. Unless you mean the older looking actors, then I believe you. Now secondly, the west in particularly Hollywood. Has made films of characters that did fight in the Eastern Front. So for you to say the West calling the Eastern Front "the Unknown War" IS FALSE! We know of the Eastern Front! Its been well documented in books for decades! I read about Operation Bagration when I was a young boy in High School 30 years ago! Zhukov, Konev, ALL the Soviet Marshals of WW2 has been available in the west! The biggest reason why Western film companies did not tell Russian stories often is because.... Western forces did not serve on the Eastern Front!

The only warships of the Soviet Navy in the Battle of Berlin were the PG-117 boats of the Dnieper military flotilla. With the help of these small boats, 16 thousand soldiers, 600 guns and mortars, 27 tanks were transported across the Spree River. My grandfather served in the Dnieper military flotilla and went through the entire war from Stalingrad to Berlin - along the rivers.

@user-th2jm9gu7o
@user-th2jm9gu7o Жыл бұрын

I thought more could have been shown of the difficulties on the Seelow heights and also the Warsaw uprising and finding the death camps but I guess you can only get so much into a film covering years of war and hardship. The portrayal of Stalin was amazing, it actually seemed like him and even Hitler was believable. Remarkable film and I still have part 5 to look forward to.

A brilliant series of films. Actors playing key German, Russian, US and British roles are spot on, a few are remarkable, even voicing the correct words (lips are correct) whilst clearly not knowing the language - and then over-dubbing with really good voice actors - Churchill voice is very good, other English accents are spot on. I'm also amazed by the sheer scale of these battle scenes, Kursk, crossing into Poland etc. Military ranges? And the number of tanks - these are the real thing, no models or CGI here, and being driven quite aggressively too, fantastic to see and hear them in action. Ditto german tanks. (I did see in film #2 using german ground attack aircraft that were definitely not german but Russian, but other than that some great aviation too) Scary to think what the Russians had to make just films and play about with compared to size of western tank armies nowadays. And I bet a good few of the tanks seen here are still running somewhere in Russia! These films are a really good example of Russian film-making at it's best. A fair portrayal of both sides, ok slightly pro-Russian but fair enough, nowhere near as strong as the US and more lately British war films which do too much moralising. We all know war is bad so don't need constant re-telling. Here the Russians focus on the story itself and the people involved without worrying about ifs buts and maybes.

you know, at first the scene with the general standing by the tank while under fire made me think he was crazy. but it hit me. when that infantry came running up and saw this old general personally risking his life they were inspired and more motivated to kick the shit out of the anti-tank squads. if this old man wasn't afraid, why should they be? i wonder if that was the intent, or how accurate that was to reality?

Fascinating series of movies. I didn’t know they existed. I have always realized that the Eastern Front never received the respect from the Western Media that it was due. But, I have read many histories that Eisenhower was adamant that he would not incur the 100,000 dead that it would take to capture Berlin only to give it to the Russians who were given Eastern Germany as a result of the Yalta Conference. Maybe Churchill wanted Berlin but Eisenhower made it very clear to Montgomery, Patton, and every other general: we’re not going to Berlin. I believe one goal occupying Montgomery was to get to Denmark before the Russians did. I realize this film was at least partially a work of propaganda, but the few historical inaccuracies do bother me. Maybe it’s because it’s the first movie about the European Theatre that I’ve seen from a Soviet perspective. In any event, this is a fascinating series of films. The Eastern Front deserves to have its story told.
