The BBC News at Ten is live from southern Poland, on perhaps the most infamous site in Europe, the former Nazi death camp at Auschwitz. World leaders joined survivors here to keep alive the memory of the victims. 6 million people, mostly Jewish, were murdered by the Nazis, more than a million of them in the camp. 75 years ago today, the Soviet Army liberated Auschwitz, and it came to symbolise the horror of the Nazi regime. Today’s ceremony had at its heart the survivors, who urged the world never to forget the suffering here.
Reeta Chakrabarti is live at Auschwitz for the commemorations with a special report from our World Affairs correspondent John Simpson.

I was there that day last year. In Auschwitz Birkenau. We were standing outside and watched everything on a big screen. It was so heartbreaking listening to the speeches of all the survivors. We were on a five day excursion and I’ve seen and felt things I will never ever forget. It took me days to comprehend everything I took in during those five days. Truly horrible.

It was in (occupied) Poland then as well. The borders between Germany and Poland, and Poland and the USSR (Belarus and Ukraine) were shifted westwards as a result of the Yalta and Potsdam agreements at the end of the war,but the easternmost part of Germany (excluding Prussia) never extended as far east as Oswiecim, which is 60 miles west of Krakow, which itself is due south of Warsaw. The Polish cities of Poznan,Wroclaw and the town of Szczecin had the German names Posen,Breslau and Stettin respectively, while Lviv (at one stage called Lvov) was in Poland but is now in the Ukraine.

Nobody gives enough credit to some of the Soviet soldiers who stayed behind; when they arrived and came across the thousands of trapped heavily malnourished prisoners living in those awful conditions, a lot were absolutely shocked and horrified! Some stayed with the Polish Red Cross to build hospitals, help aid the living and attempt to save the dying. So many of the ex-prisoners hugged, kissed, and cried when they finally got their freedom. Respect from an American, and bless the people who suffered

The holocaust was truly the most terrifying and saddest event in history one thing that makes me so angry today is that I hear people saying we are like the prisoners in concentration camps’ Its outrageous to me, we are not going through anything similar to this, we are simply just being told to stay in our homes until it’s safe but people who were taken to these camps most of them never made it out alive because of them being totured and never got to live there full life that’s why we need to prevent this from ever happening again

Nena x Don't you dare compare the holocust to whatever happens in israel. Your statment right now shows how much knowledge you lack on the matter. You should be ashamed. The ones to blame in israel are hamas. The goverment of israel provides the people of gaza with food, medicine electricity and money. Hamas makes life in gaza harder than it should be. Learn the facts and not lies you see on the news, and think before you speak and compare methodical murder of 6 million human beings.

So shame on you for talking without knowing what's really going on ! I was like you before but once ive been there and seen with my own eyes it felt like I was lied to my whole life . As jews we're the first ones who should know how it feels like to be discriminated against and Zionists are using our past suffering to make other ppl endure what our ancestors went through and it breaks my heart. While living in Chicago, I went to a traveling Holocaust Memorial/Museum. Displayed were an exhibit of the camps with manikins of the prisoners were actual prison garbs - a lab coat of Mengeles, very detailed pictures of the real liberations - and so much more. After my visit, I stayed in the parking lot, numbed and trying to process it all. What I saw will stay with me for the rest of my life - and I am still speechless regarding it all. Words can never explain the total evil that I sensed, even though it was 50 + years ago.....evil never dies - it just stays dormant until someone opens the door and releases it, and the innocent pays the price.
