I love that little smirk on the ref's face. He knew he got it right. This is definitely my favorite fault to call, although it's rare. Happens mostly in younger games where someone doesn't know the rule.

when your inside the court playing, lapses really sometimes happen and that particular fault was a rare one...They are not aware of that, if so and the setter know, then he might just set the ball to prevent the error...The fault was really on the setter....

it wasn't caught on tape but this happened a couple months back to one of my mates in an official game, he usually plays outside, but he was playing libero and hit a pipe off of a broken play and it was called. it was a great hit, he just forgot he was a libero.

It’s not illegal for a libero to set it over hand in front of the 10 foot line, however, if it IS set overhand, and a player decides to attack (as in that setter dump) then that attack is illegal. Had the second person set someone up, it would not have been called. For this reason, liberos tend to bump set more often around the 10 foot line, so if someone does attack it’s not illegal.

Almost, if a libero overhand sets in front of the 3m line, then the next contact cannot be above the height of the net. That's why you always see liberos bump-set whenever they have to take the 2nd contact in the front court because that way they don't overhand set and get penalised.

The play of the libero is legal if…..the setter had set the ball. However, it will be an illegal move if the next person hits it overhead to the other side of the court. It is not the fault of the libero if the setter suddenly dunks the ball to the other side. Overhead pass is easy to do especially for a libero. Had the libero receives the ball(sets overhead) past the 3m line and the setter dunks it, it will be a legal play.

The libero overhand set the ball within the 3m line (the line that separates the front and back parts of the court) Nobody is allowed to attack the ball above the net if the libero overhand sets the ball within the 3m line or is stepping on the line. (above the net basically means jumping while attacking) So, if someone wishes to attack the ball, they when the libero sets in the 3m line, they would have to stay standing. The attack (the setter dump in the vid) was illegal because he attacked it when the libero set the ball inside the 3m line. Generally, it is suggested for liberos to bump the ball instead of overhand set so they don't have to worry about this silly rule. The rule is to prevent teams from letting the libero be an all time setter so they don't have a libero who doesn't have to rotate to the front row and the team will have 3 hitters at all times. So they made the rule to prevent this unfair advantage from happening.

a libero can't set a connecting attack from the front row/a hitter can't attack a ball set by a libero from the front row. the libero can enter the 3m line and can pass overhand, but an attacking play cannot be made as a result of it.

When the libero plays the ball overhand with fingers from the front zone (3 m, including the 3 m line) a following attack hit *executed with ball position completely above net height* is not allowed. An attack hit is every ball played (by whatever technique) toward the opponent, crossing the net plane through the crossing space (between antennas).

Libero can't do an overhand finger set for an attack that's above the net within the 3-meter line (the front zone). They can still do it from the back zone, or jump from the back zone into the front zone and do the setting while they are still in the air. That libero passed the ball to the setter which he directly dumped it, had the setter normally set an attack instead of dumping it, it wouldn't be a fault attack.

no they arent? if that was the case then the libero could be your setter and set everyone from in front of the attack line. if there was no libero, no fault. but since the libero hand set someone from in front of the attack line and they actually attacked it above the net its an illegal play. The libero's role on the court is to pass and be a defender, not to be the setter.

@@tasneemahmed5821 The reason behind the rule is to prevent a team from employing their libero as an all-time setter so that they could have a setter who never has to rotate into the front row and thus 3 attackers at all times. If the rule didn't exist, then every team would just dress their setter as the libero. Just like why there are back-row attack rules: if there weren't, then you could have 6 attackers all going up at the net at once and it wouldn't be fair on the blockers. The rules exist for a good reason.
