Mili and ProjectMoon's working relationship started because a fan used one of Mili's songs for a Lobotomy Corporation AMV which grew really popular, so PM decided to get Mili to do a couple tracks for Ruina and mutually discovered they really enjoy working with each other. Both of these tracks are used for what the fandom affectionately calls "Mili Jumpscares". Not all battles use Mili songs, but the ones that do stick with you often due to being a sizable difficulty spike. Though while "From a Place of Love" isn't *that* hard the subject matter surrounding it is one of the most haunting moments in the series. It's really fun because a lot of them challenge the idea and expectation of what a boss theme *is*, while there are a couple that feel more conventional in that regard the bulk of them are more delicate songs like these.

Both of these songs are for boss themes. In Library of Ruina, all the instrumental themes are done by Studio EIM, and all the songs are done by Mili, with every Mili song (I believe there's 8 in LoR, if I remember correctly) being the opening theme, the ending theme, and themes for special boss battles. But your sinister/twisted vibes for the first song were right on the money. Despite the superficially saccharine atmosphere of it, it actually plays for what is probably the most horrifying moment (and boss battle) of the entire game. I'm not going to spoil anything on that, other than to say there's a reason why "We don't talk about Love Town" is one of the biggest memes from the fanbase. It's probably one of the most iconic moments of Project Moon's brand of horror in the series (the entire Project Moon series of games falls under the horror genre, mostly because the setting of the City is pretty much Hell incarnate). I don't think I'll ever hear "L-O-V-E" quite the same way ever again. But anyway, I agree with you on the second song. It's one of my favorite Mili songs in this game. It's a very understated song, but the way it's recorded and the relative quietness of it backed by the somber harmonies really haunts your soul in the best possible way. And this song plays for what is probably one of the most depressing moments (and boss battles) of the game. Though to be honest, a lot of boss fights and story moments in the game are pretty sad. When you live in a dystopian world, there's plenty of depression to go around. Who knew? But to clarify your confusion on titles, And Then Is Heard No More is the song name, and To Kill a Living Book is the album name (which contains all of Mili's LoR songs). I'm pretty sure I talked about the game and its combat quite a bit, but that was also a long time ago. It's a fairly unique style of turn-based combat where you and the enemies act at the same time and clash with your attacks to try and overpower the other. It's an exhilarating and fun battle system that mostly gets ported over to its sequel, Limbus Company, and I don't think I've ever encountered gameplay quite like it. P.S. If you want to see more of Mili's vocal range, you should definitely check out Through Patches of Violet (the one I requested a few months ago).

Mili has an album called Key Ingredient in which they re-do some of their songs but with only piano as the sole instrument. From a Place of Love is one of the songs they chose for that album, and it's one of my favorite songs ever, she changes how she sings some of the lyrics, and just the piano being the main show of the song makes it so beautiful and creepy at the same time. At a point in the song the piano gets even louder and grander and its just so cool. Def in my top 10 songs of all time

The visuals for the songs on Mili's channel are never related to the games. They usually have an artwork made that illustrates the song itself rather than use images from the games, probably because they want to target a larger audience. That's also why you can't make head or tail of them from a game's perspective. On that note, If you could make an exception, I would really recommend trying to pay attention to the lyrics for Mili songs, because Cassie takes great care in giving them 2 to 3 several meanings, so you can get something out of them even if you're not initiated to the games. For instance, From a Place of Love can be interpreted as a relationship going wrong if you just take it at face value, but the real meaning, which I'm contractually obliged not to talk about is far more literal and sinister. Since you mentioned Yamato Kasai, he is the other face of the group and always behind the piano in all their songs. If you enjoy his playing and have some requests for Ender Lilies, I recommend checking them out as he was mostly in charge of that soundtrack.

@agenderwitchery
@agenderwitchery 2 ай бұрын
Your guess that From A Place Of Love is horror is spot on - the latter half of the song is entirely literal. "Let us be one", "We stick together", "Before we started feeding on each other", all of these lines happen in the most literal way possible. A young pair of lovers got on a train that "malfunctioned" and after 3 months (of the 2000 years they were on the train total), people started cannibalizing each other out of madness. The couple would later go on to be stitched together, convinced that it was the only way they'd be able to protect the train car they were in. As for And Then Is Heard No More, it's one of my favorite songs in the game. The theme for it is "see not, hear not, speak not". After a man watches everyone in his life die in front of his eyes while he remained helpless and the only survivor due to running away, he eventually turns into a monster that embodies his inability to accept and move on from his failures. He did briefly summon the resolve to push forward, but ultimately was tormented and pushed over the edge, giving in to his own anxieties. Also anyone who chides me with "we don't talk about love town" is meming up the wrong tree. Half the fun here is hearing Jesse's interpretation of the song and then seeing the actual context in the comments.

By the way, do you want to know how did Mili get involved in PMoon games? The first game PM made, Lobotomy Corporation was extremely obscure game with extremely devouted fanbase. One of first pieces of fan videos was someone's VERY simple and modest animated video made to Mili's song "execute(me)". Fans in the comments were gushing for months about how the song perfectly matches game's story from perspective of the character, borderline dubbing the song unofficial LobCorp theme song. The song was brainrotted SO HARD that other videos for the same song had Pmoon fans gushing about it. And Project Moon is a small studio VERY known of being always up to date with playerbase's memes and fixations. They heard the pleas and the dream that could not have been became reality. They reached out to Mili on their own, and the Library of Ruina had Mili write music for it two years after the AMV was posted.

If you're curious about how Cassie sounds like when she's singing in a more melodic way, the song they did for Arknights (Grown-up's Paradise) is probably a good choice. As for Library of Ruina, you have the story portions told in a visual novel style and gameplay portions consisting of turn based battles with rules and mechanics resembling those from certain board games (deck of cards with a list of actions your characters can perform, dice that decide the power of those actions and their outcome, etc.) and it's very focused on the idea of "fighting to death" and the emotions attached to it; as the fight goes on (you and the enemies taking damage and suffering casualties), emotion levels rise and both sides gain powerups from it.

Yamato Kasai (or HAMO) is the main composer for Mili. Cassie draws the most attention for the group with her unique vocal style, but I feel like HAMO is severely underrated. His ability to compose a track that's fitting to an environment or moment is top-tier, even without Cassie's vocals. The Ender Lilies OST is a great example of this, as Cassie is not present in a majority of those tracks, but they still invoke just as many feels that any other Mili song with Cassie would.

To comment on the gameplay/ premise since its not discussed too much in the comments, the game is a deckbuilder/ visual novel that takes place in a library that lure's people in with the prospect of earning books that contain information they desire, however they must pass an "ordeal" which is to defeat all of the librarians who seek to kill them. Should one die in the library they are transformed into a book that contains all of the knowledge and skills that person had and is added to the library's collection. The twist here is you are the librarians turning people into books, and your goal is murder anyone who seeks to obtain anything from the library The gameplay loop is as follows, Visual novel segment: you see the future "guests"(victims) of the library and the circumstances that lead them to being invited to visit, all the while sprinkling in lore about the world Gameplay segment: You build a team of librarians, each team member has a 9 card deck that cycles turn by turn. You gain cards by burning the books of former "guests" (victims) to gain "pages" (cards) to add to your ever-growing collection. The exciting thing is nearly every card an enemy uses in the game is something you can add to your collection, so fighting a "guest" gives you a preview of what you stand to gain by defeating them. Then rinse repeat and thats the game, eventually plotlines converge and you reach the conclusion of the story.

Since no one wants to talk about it, i'll do a VERY BRIEF RUNDOWN about "From a Place of Love" In the Library of Ruina there is a Corporation, "Warp Corporation" or W Corp for short that offers instant translation from a place to other via using Warp trains, offering different charges for their services. Inside though, when you are already warping, the time is still and there is perpetuity, making you unable to die or to age, but not invulnerable to physical harm. The ones that pay more remain on this stasis for a lesser time, in the game described for about a week, and the "Commercial buyers" spend what is only described by an ETERNITY of time, Douzens of thousands of years, in the song, you play against the remnants of the commercial passangers that already spent millenia destroying eachother and rebuilding themselves with flesh and bone. The gist is that when you arrive through the warp, its as if nothing ever happened, you don't remember anything and in the real life time it was but an instant.
