So welcome to your first Mili song! The singer (Cassie Wei, AKA momocashew) and her band are pretty popular, if you haven't already noticed. Their songs are also _really_ unique. They have some very abstract lyrics heavy on cultural references and symbolism that can be hard to decipher on a first listen, so your confusion is understandable. They also have some other interesting quirks, like how many songs are told as a sort of story in itself, how much momocashew likes to sing about food, and how she likes to straight-up make up words on occasion. But what really makes Mili stand out, in my opinion, is how she tackles a lot of heavy topics with that sugary, breathy voice. If you just listen to the voice alone, you'd think you be hearing about fun times and cute things... except if you pay attention, you'll notice she's singing about things like self-doubt, the senselessness of sacrifice, and existential crises. Existentialism, in particular, is a big theme tackled in Library of Ruina, which is why this is the game's opening theme song (aside from the lyrics pertaining to the main character). This song alone discusses stuff like questioning if we're truly our own persons, how much can we control our own destinies, whether it would it make us happier to go with society's flow instead of forging our own path... yeah, looking back on it, this song foreshadows a bunch of plot points in the game. But it's great. Mili's songs have this tendency to make you think about their lyrics long after you listened to them. The band's done a bunch of songs for this game, so there's plenty more funky existential suffering to come (as one KZbin commenter oh-so memorably described this song as). This game's soundtrack is pretty varied, but there's two primary contributors: 99% of the instrumental themes are from Studio EIM, while the songs are all by Mili. And when there's a song, it's either the opening theme, the ending theme, or a climactic boss theme... so when you hear the vocals in-game, that's when you know to take things dead seriously.

Also, a theocracy is a form of government where a god/gods are the ultimate authority, and whose laws are enforced by religious officials. So String Theocracy basically means a religious government that controls its citizens through puppet strings.

Both the opening theme and the ending theme for the game are from the perspective of one of the main characters, Angela. Based on her experiences and viewpoints at the beginning and end of the story. A lot of the lyrics in the opening theme make more sense as you play through the game. It also has a WONDERFUL cinematic animation to go along with it in game, which plays every time you open the game.

Fun fact: Mili also composed the entire Ender Lilies soundtrack (also Bulbel is top tier)! I didn’t connect the dots that it was the same Mili until I was looking up the band’s songs when I got into Library of Ruina (now I have like 15 Mili songs in my daily playlist lol) So technically, I got introduced to Mili twice! Once through ender lilies (a fantastic game, by the way), and once through Library of Ruina.

I love this song so much, it plays whenever you open the game after you've gone through the introduction of the game, so I liked to listen it whenever I played...Mili loves their dark abstract/poetic lyrics combined with a very cute voice and really great instrumentals! Project Moon actually reached out to Mili to commission them, presumable knowing them from other games (I knew Mili first from Deemo and Cytus, they've been a staple artist for Rayark's rhythm games I feel like). The members of Mili ended up liking the world and story that Project Moon presented so much, they made an extra song that's not in the game but they put it on their Library of Ruina album "To Kill A Living Book", and they've continued to make the theme song for the next upcoming game, Limbus Company! Glad you enjoyed your first impression of Mili, looking forward to their other songs from this game, theyre all so amazing :D

Easily one of my favorite tracks from the game because it's such a roller coaster of emotions. Even better, this song, despite how scattered its lyrics seem, ends up making complete and perfect sense once you have the context from the game. It's actually incredible how much this song tells you about the game in such a manner that you'll only understand it once you've experienced it firsthand in the game. It spoils you without spoiling you, and you never realize it until you get to the point it spoils you on. Truly An Utterly Stellar, well-crafted, and sung, song from Mili.

Milli’s work in ruina uses different genres for each song, but still has their own musical core that combines a sort of broadway feel with j-pop. In the end, the lyrics are something that are completely insane until you gain context. And Then Is Heard No More is a beautiful song that wears its context on its sleeve, so you might really want to check that out

Im in the middle of my library of ruina gametrough now. Its the first time i play this game since ive heared alot positive about it, im 90 hours in (which isnt that far in as it sound). So Mili is fair play, pretty nice. Well this theme is the intro song for the game (go watch the intro) It's a back and forth talk between two main characters (Angela and HER). You only get this if you played the games. Still Mili is very jazzy with heavy grim stuff as lyrics, fun times. Mili also made most of the important bossfight themes in the game.

Since nobody has really said it yet, I figure I should give you the key to understanding String Theocracy. It's a duet, with both singers being the same person at different times of their life. There's a subtle reverb effect applied to the voice (First truly apparent on 'Dance for me') because it's someone else talking through her mouth. Many of the lines are being simultaneously sung by the character's past self to her current self, and her current self to others. Others are their mirrored circumstances. Both of them wanted freedom, while denying it to others. The singer (current self) is a puppet of their (past self) while also inflicting the same thing on others. Both in a literal sense of being a creation, and trapped in their manipulations. String Theocracy is a weird song because there's almost no way to figure out what it's about before progressing through Ruina, but having beaten the game, every single line carries two or more simultaneous readings across multiple character. There's *at least* 4 cases of "If you're going to replace me, at least have the audacity to kill me thoroughly" through the game.

AH, finally we find this song. Actually surprised that nobody has mentioned to you that the game itself actually uses an edited-down version of this track, with a sort of music-video-like intro cutscene when you start the game up - this is the FULL version of the track, uploaded by the artist Mili along with many of their other tracks for the game (they basically did a whole album's worth of songs for LoR). Personally, I'd have advised you to watch the game intro first, because it is more about establishing its vibe and aesthetic and general moodsetting, and *may* have been a bit easier to analyze without getting distracted by the lyrics being so odd (may have also given you a slight crumb of context within the visuals of it, though they're quite crazy as well if you're going in blind). Then switching over to this version afterwords to be able to read the lyrics and get the verses that were cut as well (despite being cut from the in-game song, those extra lines are still largely relevant and in-character/in-setting!) Still, glad to see you get to this one at last!

You said the theme seems to be like imagination. You are kinda right in a way. Something that goes for both Lobotomy Corporation and Library of Ruina (Major spoilers here), is that there's a magical power/energy that has the capacity of physically manifesting people's mind, essentially showing off their true nature beyond the boundaries of reality. In Lobotomy Corp, this is used to create monsters (called abnormalities) made of the Souls/Minds of the dead, physically manifesting them as creatures that resemble their beliefs. There's a lot of fairy tale-like monsters because of this, like red riding hood and much more (thought a lot creepier). In Library of Ruina, the main character, Angela, is trying to attract people from the city into the Library, where by fighting with them in multiple ordeals, they get turned into books, which by using that same magical energy from the previous game, are capable of revealing someone's history and true nature. The whole library is designed to elevate the guests and receptionist's emotions, to further reveal their core. Here, books are power, and the internal revelations provided by them are reflected in the music, both the instrumental ones and these lyrical songs, as they really resemble their personalities (Gebura of the Floor of Language theme's violence, Angela's emotional breakdown, sadness and fury in the Floor Realization Theme, and so on.) String Theocracy talks about Angela's perspective in the start of the game, as she is An AI/Android made with the emotions and brain of someone very important to the story, and her reflections upon what is to be truly human. Her main objective is to obtain the Perfect Book that will transform her into human and free her from the library.

One thing to note about the songs with vocals from Library of Ruina's sound track is that all of them are designed to have valid interpretations without ever touching the game, but then gain a separate interpretation with the game in mind. String Theocracy is a bit more difficult to pull meaning from than the rest (which is saying something because Mili lyrics take a few listens to begin with) but if you pay attention, a lot of themes of society and personal identity are present. Lyrics about being a puppet, a corrupt society, the desire to give in to the norms of society versus forging your own path, it's all in there.

To explain the song title; String, in the case of Library of Ruina, is referring to Puppet Strings, as a major theme of the game relates to the Library's Director, Angela, and how she wants to "cut" those strings, break free from the play she was forced into, and live her life free. Theocracies are a system of government ran by religion, so for example the Vatican City is a theocracy as it is ran by the Pope, Lobotomy Corporation and Library of Ruina have a lot of religious themes. For example, the entire layout of Lobotomy Corporation and The Library are based on the Kabbalistic Tree of Death and the Tree of Life respectively, with the names of the core characters being based on the sephiroth of the Trees. Hence the name String Theocracy, as strings relate to Angela being trapped in her role, and Theocracy referring the entire construction of the "stage" she's forced onto. It's why the opening of the song is about opening the curtains, turning the lights on, and telling you not to miss a moment of the experiment that the "play" of Lobotomy Corporation was created around.

There is a lot of references that relies on knowledge of external sources to make sense, like the line about "eletric sheep", who furthere ties in the game plot, so yeah, it sounds like a lot of nonsense without this context.

Oh I totally missed this reaction Mili is hit or miss for me but her work on the Ruina soundtrack (and more songs than that, honestly) are 10/10 to me. Her lyric work can sound a bit like a philosophy speech given via an ESL speaker; but if you can stomach the floweriness and work with what's there there's almost always really cool and deep themes. She works really well whenever she's "storytelling" with her music which makes her a fantastic accompaniment to established IPs or her own personal narratives. I've had a hard time selling her to friends and the like, but overall I really love how much her music contributes to PM's visions and her own. So yeah, don't feel bad about being a bit intimidated by how "all over" the lyrics can be. It's kind of how she writes, and you can kind of acclimate to it with more experience with her music I've found. edit: Looking at this months later, I'm not a fan of myself saying "ESL Speaker" as an example of a poor orator. That's honestly kind of insulting. I'm keeping it up to keep me accountable for it but a better comparison would've been "like a philosophy speech fed through a machine translator" or something.
