It is always super annoying how blind Anne is to her feelings for Gilbert. Yet, that's what makes her human. We've all got to fudge something at least once in our lives. Phil's speech about how Anne doesn't know love when she sees it is 100% accurate. The whole situation shows how young and immature Anne is as a person. She's not irresponsible or anything, yet she still holds on to those same childish ideals that Dianna grew out of when she fell in love with Fred. The empty relationship with Carter and the near loss of Gilbert bring her arch full circle.

@@nozecone"hick" usually means someone who is more in the lower working class, with crude language and not very literate. I don't think that is a good description of Gilbert. Maybe we're thinking of hick with different definitions
@nozecone10 ай бұрын
Gilbert was of a farming community in a somewhat isolated, insular locale. While he would have been of the landed rather than landless class, i.e., the rural middle class, he would have had habits of speech, dress, and behaviour that would have undoubtedly identified him as a 'hick' to uncharitable urban sophisticates. 'Hick' is a classist term I would not normally utter, but since you introduced it, yes, those who use such terms might very well apply the term 'hick' to a real-life Gilbert - before he went away to college and got polished up. I will add that my mother's people were part of L.M. Montgomery's social milieu - in fact, she borrowed the name of a relative for one of her characters - so I have some idea whereof I speak.@@mecheyne
