On this day in 1986 Timothy Dalton was announced as the fourth actor to play James Bond. In this scene from LICENCE TO KILL (1989), Bond attempts to assassinate the drug baron Sanchez (Robert Davi).

The Dalton-era is often underappreciated for its approach to darker territory for the franchise, even if it's not always successful.

I think a bigger factor than that is he just didn't do it long enough to establish himself as the Bond of any generation. Connery was the 60's Bond, Moore was the 70's Bond into the mid 80's, Brosnan was the 90's Bond. So Dalton is the late 80's Bond lol? If you only do 2 movies the best you'll get is a cult following for Bond...

@@mikesteelheart Same thing happened to Lazenby as well but i think unlike Lazenby, Dalton has ability to carry a film. How much i wished he did a third film. Every single bond became a big hit with their 3rd film, Connery with 'Goldfinger', Moore with 'The spy who loved me' and Craig with Skyfall, only brosnan didn't became a hit with his 3rd.

@@lukasnummer1 I wasn't just taking about financial success, every single bond film is financial success. Bond is a cash cow whoever plays the role. @@gauravtributes5023 I think 2 movies was just right for Dalton, actually and License to Kill was a perfect vehicle for him. I think the reason why a lot of us are big fans of Dalton is that he wasn't as successful as the other guys. If Dalton did a 3rd movie in say 1991 and it was a big box office hit then they'd want him to do a 4th movie and now Brosnan's getting out of the picture. I just think it worked out best the way it happened with it ending in 1989. I can't see Dalton doing another movie that tops License to Kill for his portrayal of the character.

@Qasim Hussain They wanted Sanchez to be more like a real life drug lord so a traditional Bond henchman would be too campy. Somehow, I always loved License to Kill. Tim Dalton did a great job playing as Bond, Robert Davi played a villain that felt quite real (let's face it, a drug baron in the 80s? they could have the charm, charisma, wealth, and potential for causing harm to protect their interests), and I loved that it wasn't some story with "save the world and country" as its focal point but it was instead more personal for Bond.

One of the aspects of this film, that I've never heard anyone touch upon, which I really enjoy is how dark the British Secret Service is. They're ready to kill 007 because he's a liability. It's often said that 00's have a short life expectancy so the issue of 'forced retirement' never really comes up, but seeing how dark the intelligence world is on both sides truly drew me in. I was disappointed they softened up and took the political approach for the remainder of the story. They could've made it very exciting and left out the Chinese Intelligence agents and instead have Bond ambushed by MI6 Agents, only to be thwarted by Sanchez's arrival. This also would've inadvertently sold 007's cover as a rogue agent for hire. The Ernest Hemingway scene is probably my favourite Timothy Dalton James Bond moment. There's so little there, but the actors play it beautifully and make the tension palpable. We've never seen M at his most Dangerous until this moment and finally realize why Connery's Bond toed the line. Sadly, the only other times we've seen M touch upon ruthless with Bond were with Dench's M giving a veiled threat in Goldeneye, and a quick one in Casino Royal in regards to her real name. A missed opportunity for sure. I think that's what the new Bond films will require moving forward, the feeling that Bond survives in a Dangerous world from all sides.

with q why didn't he make better labs and undetectable drugs to be richer than sanchez?
@rezarajamuda31054 жыл бұрын
On the contrary, i think Q would be more suitable if he make a Labs of Modified Artilery, And Bond make his own Private Mercenary Agency ?, They'll gonna be much Richer and Stronger conpared to sanchez.

@@auro1986 Yeah I Agree with you, but Q is more suitable to tech and Bond is more Suitable as A Mercenary/Terorist if he gone Rogue to the Dark World, Remember Raoul Silva at SKYFALL ?, Roughly that's maybe bond gonna be if he jump to far to his dark side.

This felt more Tarantino than Fleming/Bond.

I went from thinking Dalton was a terrible Bond to thinking he was a perfect Bond faithful to Flemings vision to now seeing some flaws in his portrayal. First of all while Bond did have humanizing traits like doubts & feelings of affection in Casino Royale but he would hide them behind his armored facade of aloof coldness. Daltons Bond is too openly emotional & too human. He openly resigns from MI6 to hunt Sanchez like a hothead while actual Bond would either discreetly investigate Sanchez without MI6 knowing or he would manufacture a legitimate reason for MI6 to look into Sanchez thus giving him a good excuse to go after Sanchez. Dalton’s portrayal is too likable while Bond shouldn’t be a likable person. He’s the A-hole you need to get the job done.

I feel the same way. I remember hating him cuz I love Connery better. And now look at me....loving DaltonxD. Man I love his portrayal of Bond so much

Actually it’s from Thunderball onwards (with the exception of Roger Moore’s first two films)
