@@LexingtonDeville984 I'll say! They spent too much time spinning their wheels after LTK. Six years of no Bond? Blasphemous. One or two more outings would've made his run feel all the more fulfilled. But at least he's finally getting recognized for staying as true to Ian Fleming's personification of Bond as he was able to do. Dalton was probably the most grounded and most realistic Bond. He absolutely deserved at least one more go.

@@LexingtonDeville984 The poll wasn't done fairly. It was done in knock-out rounds of 2. Round 1 was Connery vs Craig which of course Connery won. Round 2 was Brosnan vs Lazenby which gave Brosnan an inflated lead as Craig was already knocked out. Under regular voting polls Craig would likely be above Brosnan. Round 3 saw Dalton knock Moore out of the competition. Then the final pitted Dalton against Brosnan and Connery. The results would have most likely differed if say Round 1 was Connery vs Dalton, Round 2 was Moore vs Lazenby and Round 3 was Craig vs Brosnan. Connery would have knocked Dalton out, Moore would have knocked Lazenby out and Craig would have knocked Brosnan out. Thus the final 3 would have been Connery, Moore and Craig.

J.J. Don’t take this the wrong way, but I think you’re just upset that Moore didn’t make the top 3 and Dalton did. Audiences had gotten way too comfortable with Moore’s slapstick antics in the 80’s. His era was like a never-ending party of camp akin to the Adam West Batman series, whereas Dalton’s only two outings were like having a bucket of cold water dumped on your head. You can only go so far with light-heartedness in the Bond movies, and Octopussy and View to a Kill are living proof.

In many ways, this is the final of Bond. How you said, the classic Bond, the cold war was over and James, pulled out from IM6, have only one thing to do: staying with Pam Bouvier. After, Brosnan era rewrite and resettled in post cold war, and for Craig, they told his history from beginning to end.

It’s certainly the last film that feels like it’s part of the greater franchise that started in 1962. Obviously the Cold War ending changed things a lot and I wish they’d had more of a Cold War theme for this one because of it. Goldeneye started a series of films that were more or less Bond satires. Judy Dench has a great monologue about Bond being a “sexist, misogynist dinosaur,” but it’s clear that she’s parodying the past films rather than celebrating them. Even Robbie Coltrane’s casting reinforces that. The reason Bond has been hit and miss since 1995 is that once you take him out of the Cold War, what do you do with him while retaining the elements that identified him for so long. The Craig films tried to bring back SPECTRE, but the writing wasn’t good enough and we associate that organization so much with the Cold War that without it, we get a Star Wars storyline. Bond should be his own thing. Separate from other films.

But when they couldn't get Gotell, they changed the character's name. It's the same thing with the character Pushkin. So maybe had things gone a bit differently, it would have been Gogol trying to save Bond in The World Is Not Enough.

@@shiptj01I suspect Dalton was much more than simply another portrayal of Bond. It's pretty clear to me he was taking it into another direction. The way this movie ends it seems pretty clear he was retiring. He was going to get married and settle down. It might not have flown with the formula many think makes Bond a character but Dalton wanted Bond to be an individual. He wasn't supposed to be a movie star. Dalton was going to take Bond into an entirely new direction. Carey Lowell would have been his spouse. They would have been like Jonathan Hart and Stephanie Powers. Hart to Heart. I can promise you that. I suspect Dalton quit after being told that it was GoldenEye. That's not what he wanted so he simply retired.

Wow, my thought exactly! I didn't feel like posting a nostalgic comment on the scene, but the very melody urged me to do so. I feel, that it's not just 1980s, but a very different epoch passing by. It was the last 007 film set in the Cold War era, with noone expecting the Iron curtain to collapse, thus igniting so many new events, motives, ideas, etc, which would later come up in newer James Bond films.

He was actually scheduled to do 3 with Property of a Lady (1991/2 was meant to be the release) but the lawsuits and litigations happened because Licence to Kill didn't do very well at the box office despite it being a good film and a MAJOR rethink was needed and change needed to happen behind the scenes. This was the last film produced by Cubby Broccoli and directed by John Glen (Dalton was said to have had a major bust up with him) was really the last film with the old guard making it. So yeah Licence to Kill is definitely the end of an era for Bond as a major revamp happened once Barbara Broccoli took over from Cubby in late 1993.

Not only this is a criminally underrated movie (if LTK is treated like that, imagine TLD that barely gets a mention) it's a brilliant addition to the series. The main issues here are these : badly timed, wrong marketing with rivals such as Batman, Indiana Jones/Crusade, Lethal Weapon 2 and others, along with the tone being too dark - shame, as the film has its own version of Tony Montana, like Franz Sanchez, met a deserved comeuppance due to their own riches. As for the intro music and end, between Mr Michael Kamen, Ms Gladys Knight and Ms Patti LaBelle et cetera, certainly made sure that 007 said farewell to the 80's!.

Totally agree with the marketing and release, they had to drastically change the title from License Revoked because viewers at a test screen confused it with losing a driver’s licence, the dark gritty nature and violence also altered the rating it got as well. *This film was released in 1989, and in a way this outro is the perfect way to see-out the 80s. This is also the perfect exit for Timothy Dalton, despite the fact he was one of the best Bonds who could've gone on into the 90s.*

Did anyone else feel so reassured when at the end of the credits it says "JAMES BOND WILL RETURN"? I know it says that at the end of every Bond film but its especially reassuring considering all the trouble the franchise was in after this movie, but they made it through. No matter what the difficulty James Bond will ALWAYS return.

I enjoyed the first two Brosnan films, but then they got progressively silly with the storylines and bad use of CGI. THEN they went in the opposite direction with the charmless Daniel Craig, overwrought storylines and villains who had personal grudges against M, MI5 and Bond. I prefer my villains to be megalomaniacs or billonaires, thank you!

Not many Bond films do I love more than "Licence to Kill". It is one of the very best. Timothy Dalton is magnificent, magnificent; Robert Davi is one of the best villains in the series; John Glen's direction is action-oriented and to the point; Michael Kamen's score is masterful; the Bond girls are hot, especially Talisa Soto! A top 5 Bond film for sure. This song is really a closure to the 80s. Such a brilliant decade for film-making.

I would agree and even say it might be the most memorable ending to a Bond film. The fish winking is like a goodbye to Dalton and a goodbye to the 1980's as well. Dalton WAS James Bond and is the only actor to portray the character as Fleming intended. It's a shame people dragged their feet on producing a script for "Property of a Lady" which would have been Dalton's third film, it's a shame because Dalton had waited nearly his entire life (originally asked back in 1969 for On Her Majesty's Secret Service) and kept declining because he felt he was too young, and then he quit the contract in 1994 because no one was doing anything. Dalton was truly cheated out of his chance, but we are left with two very solid and strong entries.

Echoboomer1987 I disagree completely. That's the problem with most Bond films, other than perhaps "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" and perhaps maybe one or two others, they have sweet endings. I want an ending to a film that surprises and is unpredictable. A good spy movie - unfortunately, this has never been the case with James Bond - should have a touch of Film Noir about it. It should end with a punch in the gut leaving the movie goer in a sweat.

LTK marked the end of Bond as people knew it back then. It was pretty much Cubby Broccoli's last film that he was involved with, Final film directed by John Glen. Even though it had "JAMES BOND WILL RETURN" many people weren't so sure as Bond was considered irrelevant by this point, so if Bond did return it wouldn't be a for a long time as this felt like a "Goodbye, for now"....then along came Goldeneye.
