20:45 Thrist does not resolve becouse all of the spell's target are illegal (in this case they don't exist anymore). From CR608: Resolving Spells and Abilities: "If all its targets, for every instance of the word “target,” are now illegal, the spell or ability doesn’t resolve". The life gain of thrist doesn't target a player, so when they kill the creature, thrist has no target and therefore it does not resolve. A similar situation happens when you cast Cryptic Command in "counter and draw" mode and they remand their own spell. Cryptic does not resolve becouse it no longer has targets.

Don't know if anyone answered yet, but the Nightmare's Thirst around 20:30 whiffed because all targets listed in the card text went missing. Spells fizzle in their entirety if ALL targets in the text are gone. If even a single target remains, the spell will try to resolve as much as it can, no matter the order of clauses in the text.

It just can't be used to gain land advantage, but they're not going to reprint Sinkhole anytime soon in Standard or Modern, and in Vintage there's a good chance Assassin's Trophy can't find any basic land in the opponent's deck. Alternative answer: Vindicate in an Orzhov deck; Assassin's Trophy in a Golgari deck.

Regarding about resolving spells without targets. An instant or sorcery spell that has targets will only resolve if it has at least one legal target while it's trying to resolve. If for some reason the spell has 0 legal targets, then it is considered to be countered and will not resolve. That is why nightmare's thirst at 20:40 did not resolve and therefore didn't gain the life.

On your nightmares thirst play, the nightmares thirst hadnt begun resolving yet, so no life gain. Although, you were correct that the life gain occurs first had it begun resolving.

Although he didn't duress he could play around it. Hit them like 10 damages a turn, you can give his opponent 3 settles and CGB can still win, he had like 4 creature-removal. It was pretty funny that his opponent god-like topdeck though.

seems like they screwed up the text on this card.. it really should be worded differently.. i totally agree, you should gain the 1 life regardless. clearly states, "you gain 1 life." period... then you target.. obviously the effects of the target don't happen if there is no target.. but the life gain happens before it targets. from gatherer.wizards.com - "If the target creature is an illegal target when Nightmare’s Thirst tries to resolve, the spell doesn’t resolve. You won’t gain 1 life."

Ah, the good old lich tribal. About the not gaining a life issue, I'm not 100% sure but I think that if a card has one or more targets, if all these targets are invalid at the moment it should resolve, then it fizzles completely.

Mill decks are so slow, you would generally have to impact the board as much as they do to lose. If you really wanna smash (nonexistent) mill, Clear the mind I guess? Or Golgari/Sultai Graveyard Decks are really good, because you are also basicly trying to mill yourself with that decktype.

When a spell has one target and its target becomes untargetable (in this case killed by his own murder) the spell fizzles entirely. The actual ordering of the words has no bearing on this.

Why don't you put the Phylactery Lich counters on Lich's Mastery? The Mastery isn't going to leave the battlefield anytime soon and if it does, you're losing anyway. By putting the counter elsewhere, you give your opponent more chances to make you lose.
