I was the Cavalcade matchup in this video. It's not often you get to play against one of your favorite content creators, just wish it wasn't such a blowout. I knew I had no chance of winning as soon as I got to see Legend's hand. My only hope was to take the Cry of the Carnarium and hope he didn't find the forth land for Ritual. Took a shot to try and dig for a Bedevil to take out the Compass and Lich, but only found the shock. GG

Many have lately removed cleansing nova from that deck, but it's still around. Usually only a 1-2 of, so you might get him dead before he finds one.

I see so many players make that mistake with lava coil and similar "if this card would be destroyed, exile it instead" cards. I think the only part they read is the "exile", because I've had way more players than I would think try and lava coil my adanto vanguards. They recognize exile gets around indestructible, but not that it actually has to be destroyed first to get the exile off :P

Only satisfying thing for me in playing monored is watching opponents burn themselves for 4 for every spell i target Vanguard. Too bad he loses his seat in this deck to Tithe Taker.

Phylactery lich is probably my favorite 'bulk' rare ever. I love the card so much, it's flavorful, cool, and creates a really cool interaction for the opponent.

wow i played lich artifact deck ages ago ... nice to see some popularity. When i played it i would often use Amaranthine Wall which is indestructible when you pay 2 mana ... so an indestructible lich on an indestructible defender is very satifsfying to say the least.

There are a couple of cards that could improve your deck versus control: Helm of the Host and Phyrexian Scriptures. Scriptures are definitely very slow, but they convert your lich into an artifact, and you can put a phylactery on it, making you having an indestructible artifact with a phylactery on it; Scriptures are also very good versus graveyard-based decks (like Izzet Phoenix or Golgari Reanimator). Helm of the Host is hilarious once you get it spamming liches. I wouldn't recommend more than one of each, though, they are insanely slow. Another relatively decent (and definitely unexpected) artifact to consider is Transmogrification Wand (sp?), which destroys creatures for 1 and puts a 2/4 token instead - you can use it on enemies or your own liches, who don't get destroyed. And Chaos Wand is very nice to fish for counterspells and discards. But those are pretty bad versus aggro, so I would put them into sideboard. Splashing blue and replacing Immortal Sun with Karn and Tezzeret, and adding Quasiduplicate is also a nice way to build around lich. One with the Machine could also give some card draw.

I ordered four phylactery lichs a few months ago because I wanted to make a black artifact synergy deck. My thought was casting a forebears blade and equipping the lich with it. I'm definitely going to build the deck the way you have it. It just seems so powerful

I play Lich in almost any black deck. Don't understand why it's not played more, its an easy and extremely powerful combination with something as simple as a Fountain of Renewal.

Why do you not put a stop on your upkeep and use treasure map before drawing?

Usually do, but let's say you're holding Immortal Sun and you have 5 lands in play, it is better to take a draw first. Since we also have Gateway, we can always get rid of unwanted cards later. Forgot to stop on upkeep a few times though, wish it didn't keep resetting.

This is where I really struggle when making decks. If I am looking at my whole card collection I get overwhelmed. I try to parse it down to combos like this, but my brain just doesn't work that way.

Just find a card you like, for instance 'phylactery lich' and try to build around it. For lich you know he's triple black so you probably need to be mono black, or at least mostly black. Then you find artifacts that help you win vs control (immortal sun) and artifacts that help vs burn (fountain of life) and try to build from there. It's hard yea, but it's trial and error.

@@thechris312 thanks for the tips, i have somewhat done this in the past, but i guess i don't play enough, my collection is pretty small and i don't have a lot of wild cards either, maybe enough for 1 deck. I am a little leery about spending all my remaining wilds into 1 deck. If it doesn't work out i'll just be losing most matches.

Well... in this deck we don't care about flipping it. The point is that it's another cheap artifact for Lich and it allows us to filter through the deck quicker, drawing extra cards at the expense of ones we don't need. Seems pretty decent to me.

I built a sideboard with 1 mountain, 3 banefire, 4 duress, 2 meteor golem, 2 phyrexian scriptures, and 3 plaguecrafters. The other way to do it would be to take the eldest reborns out of the main deck and replace them with masterminds acquisition. Then fill the sideboard with one off cards that would be helpful, kinda like Ali Aindrazi's Chromatic Black deck.

I think he knew what indestructible is but didn't understand the interaction with lava coil, which exiles if a creature "would" die. He probably thought it would exile it if he burned it with damage than lava coiled. I remember doing this sort of mistake years and years ago at my first pre-release ever, when I was still quite new to the game. Your point about RDW players still stands though :D.

I haven't tested this, but if you play Phyrexian Scriptures, you should be able to make the lich an Artifact, then cast another lich and put a counter on the first artifact Lich :) now no destroy effect of any kind will work on them ;) this play renders cleanising nova 100% useless against the liches

@@LegenVD So i watched your stream. Good games. It's funny how a deck can be poised so well in one meta vs another. As exemplified by the standard RNA meta Esper deck you played in game one that basically rolled over to an indestructible lich and immortal sun vs. the GRN style Esper deck that had endless answers seemingly tailor made for you. Anyway i like this deck so much i built it in paper. I put one mountain and 3 banefires in the sideboard. Figure that helps vs the control matchup. Also Meteor Golem, which is the only way a mono-black deck can destroy enchantments or artifacts.
