IN LOVING MEMORY; GORILLA GYASI (MOTHER OF KIANGO)

I just found myself watching all of these old video's of Gyasi. I don't know, it gives me some kind of peace. Gyasi was a wonderful mother and a beautiful lady with a strong character. Everybody loved her, even though she could be stubborn or a bit crazy. We'll miss her so much.
there is a video included of baby tayari (made by Jenny) and a video of Gyasi pushing one of the teenagers into the water (made by apenheul)
Apenheul updated us today about Kiango and the rest of the group. They're all doing fine. Kiango is been taken care of by his aunts and especially Nemsi makes sure he is okay. When the small monkeys Moto and Mojo play too rough, normally Gyasi stepped in. Now people have seen Nemsi and Mandji stepping in for Kiango so that's a good thing. It is still heartbreaking but life goes on. I hope you'll enjoy the special video. Because these memories are how I want to remember Gyasi.
Gyasi died because of a bacterial infection, the caretakers and doctors did everything they could to save her. But sadly she has passed away this week.

3:34 Seeing Gyasi took her little daughter Tayari sitting at the end of branch, going up and down, no wonder Tayari is so adventurous, always going up high to the tree top. I once saw Tayari tried to use branch to lift herself up to the tree, very clever but failed, LOL~!

Thanks Lieke releases the news of Gyasi . Really, so shock. I will miss Gyasi who was a beautiful and wonderful mother. Thanks Gyasi gave us two wonderful babies . Bao Bao had lost his mother and family when he was at two years old. How come the same situation has happened on Kiango himself as same as his father Bao Bao . Please God bless Kiango. So sad for Kiango, but I know all his gorilla family have stepped up to fill the gap and will continue to do so. I knew the tears would fall when I watched this video. Thank you Lieke. Gyasi’s passing was so sudden and such a shock. Since I heard the news, I’ve been so worried about how the group are coping - especially poor wee Kiango. I’m so glad to hear that they have had time to say goodbye and understand that Gyasi is gone, and also that Kiango is being comforted by his aunties. Well her genes are strong because Tayari and Jabali look just like her an both have her unusual nature especially Tayari who can be stubborn an very eccentric lol but that’s why Gyasi an now Tayari an Jabali are so endearing they are very much individualistic with unique spirits. This is so sad. My heart breaks for little Kiango and the rest of the troop. I keep wondering, do the troop get a chance to see and understand that she's dead or does she just go missing forever? I know in the wild, when a member dies they hang around them and groom them for a while.

In the Netherlands they give all animals the time and especially primates. So they all get a chance to say goodbye. And then when time passes they'll leave and go on with their lives and then they take away the body. So they definitely have gotten the chance to say goodbye.

I just read about what happened to Gyasi and feel DEVASTATED. Such a gorgeous mama gorilla, so feisty, young, so loving, such a great mama....This was terrible news, I feel so bad for Kiango, just a little baby and already orphan. The zoo is not the one to blame. They give information as much as they think needed and I get it. Because lots of people care about the gorilla's, which also results in a lot of interference of others. It isn't easy to be a caretaker in these times. Because they have their own grieve and they have to go on with their job. Just think we'll have to wait and answers will come within time.

Leike did replied to this question from another comment...yes. Apparently they let the troop spend time with the body, and she also said that the troop may groom the deceased. They remove the body once everyone leaves, and goes about their lives.

I feel absolute shame for what we humans do to other creatures...especially those who share 98% of our very genetic material. Gyasi was beautiful but she was just a 'toy' for human hands. She may not have lived as long in the wild, or perhaps longer, but we'll never know. She will never know!!!

Hey Lieke, what happened with Gyasi? An unexpected healthy failure or a (heart) disease? it's so sad for little Kiango for suddenly missing his mom. I believe in a heaven for also all animals, so one day Kiango and all members of this gorilla family will be reunied with Gyasi in an eternal lifecondition we cannot imagine here on earth.

When she died did they let the other gorillas see and smell her body so they could know she died. Instead of the her gorilla family not knowing what happened to her. I've seen videos of gorillas and monkeys in the wild grieving over the body of their family group member. Just maybe letting them come in for even less than a hour smelling and seeing the body so they know they have died. I've always wondered that about zoos when a animal dies do they allow the others the animals family and group members see touch and smell the body. Elephants in the wild will still go to the bones of the dead and caress the bones with their trunks. People who have witnessed it say you can see and almost feel they are grieving even if the elephants died years before they still remember where their family member died. These mammals are so intelligent.
