Having worked as a toolmaker and used many of these different files of various shapes, sizes, and cuts, this gives a new perspective on their manufacture. Dedication to your craft.

This video is a real treat. I've been seeking this info for a while. Searching for "hand stitched files and rasps" usually returns results concerning needle point or computer files. Hand made tools are worth every penny.The fact that these are not twice the price is a testament to the skill, and efficiency of these craftsmen. Thanks for posting.

I used these tools working in the wood shop at Lie-Nielsen tools for years to carve and form the saw handles. There's nothing like them. They chew through wood as though it were butter and can make a tough job easy. Even in retirement they are one of the things I truly miss.
@carlkrebs14 жыл бұрын
RedStretchLimo surely you bought several for your own use tinkering around in retirement ? As well as several of those fine neilsen planes , etc ? I'm still buying em and I've been retired since 07 . From carpentry and woodworking . It's in my blood .

I remember going to garage sales and flea markets back during the 70's and 80's, looking for Sheffield steel?? not sure if that's right. They use to make the finest steel small tools for plastering and such. Rarely you could find some in a box or old tool chest. I'm glad to see that someone is carrying on with the tradition of making what is needed, even if it is in small amounts, to fudge the prices... Thank you for all you do!

Sweet video, very well produced. I would have loved to see one or two of the rasps being used, to see how fast it cuts and the finish it leaves. Video portrays a Zen like calmness in the craftsman. Even though they are performing a repetitive task day after day the craftsman show an attentiveness and commitment that I feel compelled to respect.

I was not aware of the workmanship that goes into making these files. I have over the years collected numerous files and I definitely now appreciate more what went into producing them.
@autumn5592 Жыл бұрын
Most files are cut by machine, few are cut by hand -- the rasps that are cut by hand are quite saught after because they provide a 'cleaner cut' than machine ones, due to their somewhat 'random' teeth pattern. Hand cut mill files are practically non-existent, outside of hyper specialised tooling, because there is just no advantage. Still wonderful to see these made though.

Masterwork! I wonder if the sandblasting is taking some of the sharpness away or just the oxide?
@zapa1pnt5 жыл бұрын
I'm sure it's taking only the oxide. I seriously doubt they would use anything which would negate all the work they just put into the product. They are, probably using something akin to ground walnut shells.

Quite a bit of emotion did I feel when watching this video. I live and work as a furniture restorer and cabinet-maker here in Paris, France. I'm lucky enough to own some dozen of these beauties. Although the teeth are smaller than their industrial counterparts, they really slice into the work with no rip-out. France still has a strong artisan heritage that's unique in the world. It is totally uneqauled in the quality of it's work. If you want proof, look up the story of "compagnonnage". Aurevoir
