Troi’s smile shows that she sensed that it was a genuine emotion. That’s literally the most generous thing Q ever did and the best thing he could have given Data.
@axelnussbaumer3 жыл бұрын
Q was very generous. He clearly cared for humans in his own weird way. He obviously understood they needed to be prepared for the Borg when he sent the enterprise out into the abyss. Had he not done that, the federation would have surely been assimilated.
@ralphmacchiato37613 жыл бұрын
Not as generous as when he saved that planet from ecological disaster. Or humanity from being wiped out by the Enterprise.

@AMTunLimited Brent Spiner is clearly one of the best actors I've ever seen but I still don't think that his talent alone was enough to make Data such a popular character. His personal charm and good looks had a lot to do with it as well.

Its that pause mid laughter that really does it for me. That feeling of getting over a joke only for the laughter to start up uncontrollably again is truly a sublime human feeling. Whether that was acting or script writing, this was an excellent touch. TNG was something very special.
@michaelcorcoran87686 ай бұрын
Absolutely when you're cracking up and finally you kind of take a deep breath and stop.... Usually this is with other people but not always... And then it just triggers again and you laugh even harder. Probably the closer to thing to bliss. Humans can feel beyond sex or drugs is just elated forms of laughter that they cannot control.

More accurately, he gave Data a taste of it, a taste of one of the best parts of what he sought, to encourage him to continue his pursuit, without just giving it to him wholesale.

@Elly39819 ай бұрын

Despite how most comments seem to disapprove of LaForge's questioning Data's behaviour, I noticed how nobody seemed to appreciate the empathic feeling that Troi has when she smiles at Data's laughter. And it was great to see Riker smiling afterwards, too. I think they were able to appreciate the fact that Q allowed Data to experience true emotional joy, if only for a few seconds.

I mean, if I knew somebody who had never been able to laugh and they suddenly started laughing for no apparent reason, I would probably ask them the same thing. Sudden changes in mental state or personality are potentially serious for people- and for androids, too, I would imagine.
@Isaic028 ай бұрын
@@georgerogers2120There was a blatantly obvious reason. Q stated literal seconds before that he was giving a gift. To interrupt that gift was rude, which is likely why many take issue with Laforge.
@michaelcorcoran87686 ай бұрын
@@Isaic02agree, they should have left a laughter run its course naturally. He may never experience it again (although I'm only halfway through season 6, so there are parts of the Android's lord I'm not familiar with)

Professional actors practice emotional transition -- showing the audience a change in disposition from one emotion to the next. As Brent goes from laughing to non-emotion, watch the transition. Absolutely textbook technique, perfectly executed!

@Elly398110 ай бұрын
Data does have emotions. He just couldn't recognize them for what they were until he got his emotion chip installed. He was also programmed to be much more mellow and reserved than Lore so that it would be safer for people to be around him.

So many feels! My boyfriend has recently started convincing me to watch The Next Generation, and so far, I'd have to say Picard, Q, and Data are among my top favorites. Kelly Williamson LOL I know, right? :) I also love how he can ask really embarrassing questions that we as adults would get in a lot of trouble asking in real life, but when he asks them, it's all out of innocent inquiry. The shocked/embarrassed faces he can get are priceless and I'm just like * throws up hands * I'm not even mad, bro. XD

I know! Data is all about the eyebrows hahaha. He's got such a funny "hmmph" face thing going on when he asks embarrassing or weird questions that he's oblivious to. Brent Spiner is great hahaha. I just live how all the main characters love and care about Data and how him being an android is irrelevant. *sigh* If you're a Brent Spiner fan by the way there's a hilarious low budget movie on KZbin from 1982 called "Rent Control" that stars him as a New York dad with a porn star mustache and shit luck. Hahaha. He still makes it adorable.
