As a computer scientist, I could actually see Data having these sorts of gaps in his knowledge. As a cyberneticist living in obscurity, Soong probably had all sorts of scientific knowledge that he had collected to give his creations, but ended up hacking together the basic common knowledge stuff as it came up. There are actually projects underway to try to avoid problems like this, creating enormous common knowledge databases. It'll be interesting to see how it turns out.

Finger puzzle outsmarts Data? Totally plausible. One of our Nuclear Mechnical instructors brought a yo yo to class as a training aid. We watched him untie the knot and retie it around his finger. It took several tries but he finally got it to fit his finger. One of the other students finally asked the question most of us wanted to ask. Why didn't he just put the string through the loop it came with and simply tighten it around his finger. He looked at us like what are talking about? We showed him and he said oh. It never occurred to him.

Data was created to have various gaps in his knowledge specifically so he would have to interact with others and learn. It could also be that certain words and phrases are just not in common use by that time, so Data would not be aware. There's also the belief that there's a lot of information Data has available and just doesn't have at ready access but becomes more so as he learns. In a way like how we would have to think about our phone numbers but are able to recall it more easily through repetition.
@rb930770396 жыл бұрын
As soon as Data had access to information, he would learn it and he had plenty of opportunity to learn whilst at the Academy. It does seem an obvious oversight though, seeing as we know Data is proficient in all terrestrial Earth languages and many alien languages too, it kinda jars to hear him say that.

Something I've always found funny, but never really fully understood: how does an android capable of breaking metal materials of various types get stuck in a finger trap made out of paper?

maybe he was incapable of getting his fingers out, or he didn't know how

I guess his subroutines misdirected him? When he says "intriguing", I'm guessing he reanalyzed every strand of hair on the finger trap, concluding that, yes, you have to push to get out. Also, it's just a gag in a fictional universe. Mind = blown.

Arthur Brandon Nielsen I don't think he actively uses the amount of strength he is capable of, and keeps it within human range unless he's in an emergency.

Savaralyn 0 I think so too. I mean, if he was using his full strength all the time he wouldn't be able to go around socializing with people. He also won't be able to do his work because he'll break a lot of things. xD

Arthur Brandon Nielsen He didn't want to break it. *shrug*

I just realise Data could probably tear the fingertrap very easily, even if it;s not actually paper, dude can bend metal beams.
