Lieven Scheire - DNA (English version)

Human genetics is one of the most exciting fields in science at the moment. Not only does it advance exponentially fast, it is also a field of study that will very soon affect our daily lives. We will all have to deal with the possibilities and technologies that human genetics have to offer, today and in the coming years.
Quite a few questions and dilemmas still have to be answered by us. Do I want to know everything that can be found out from my DNA? And who is allowed to use and read my genetic code? My doctor? The police? The chef of my favourite restaurant?
Also, what genetic technologies do I want to use? Do I want to clone my dog, choose my children’s eye colour, or genetically modify them to give them extra talents? Do I want others in society to be allowed to do that?
The current and future possibilities of human genetics are simply overwhelming. They are both promising and frightening, chilling and delightful. Lieven gets you up to speed, all in layman's terms, but without unnecessarily dumbing things down. Do not expect a typical science lecture. After all, Lieven has a solid background in stand-up comedy, and cannot hide it. Dubbed the secret Belgian love child of Stephen Fry and Dara Ó Briain, he conveys complex matters in an accessible way, with expertise and the necessary dose of humour.

When Lieven made his tour around the Netherlands, I visited this show in Amsterdam together with my nephew. A couple of weeks later, he also visited the town of Bussum, (where most of my family lives). We recommended this show to our family, and we all visited it. Including me and my nephew, so we have seen it twice. But when in Bussum his computer / slideshow crashed in front of the audience, I couldn’t resist shouting: “Have you tried turning it off and back on again”?! 😂

The lecture was very important and entertaining. I agree that we really should be giving more thought to all of our tech, but especially this. There sadly many today that wouldn't mind being able to practice eugenics and here we stand at the gates rattling the keys! Not to say we shouldn't advance medicine and the world, but we shouldn't enter any new waters without being mindful of the waves! De lezing was erg belangrijk en vermakelijk. Ik ben het ermee eens dat we echt meer moeten nadenken over al onze technologie, maar vooral hierover. Helaas zijn er vandaag de dag velen die het niet erg zouden vinden om eugenetica te kunnen beoefenen en hier staan ​​we bij de poort en rammelen met de sleutels! Ik zeg niet dat we de geneeskunde en de wereld niet vooruit moeten helpen, maar we mogen geen nieuwe wateren betreden zonder rekening te houden met de golven!

I actually had my DNA checked 20 years ago in the AMC cos i have a generic illness with my concent. But back then there was no 23and me and such. So it's somewhere inside a file with the researchers classified. I dont know it myself at all.

Kleine opmerking, koriander in het Engels is cilantro.

Coriander of cilantro wordt allebei gebruikt. Cilantro (uit het Spaans) meer in het Amerikaans-Engels en Coriander meer in het Brits-Engels. Soms wordt ook met cilantro verwezen naar de blaadjes van de koriander plant.
