Check out our NEW SERIES here: • Locked Up for 25 Years...
From our video archive: During filming in 2009, a teenager in a maximum-security prison segregation unit refused to give back a broom he has in his cell, and had ongoing issues with violent behavior while incarcerated. After negotiations failed to get the broom out of his cell, correctional staff assembled a tactical team to physically remove the teenager from his cell and place him in a restraint chair.
Following the filming of this episode, Superintendent Dempsey--who had just arrived as the new superintendent at the facility--implemented a new way of working with teen offenders when situations like this arose again. He banned long term segregation at the prison, ended cell extractions in all but extreme emergency situations, and implemented a counseling team to verbally deescalate teens who were aggressive or combative. Coming soon, videos of what this new process looked like once implemented.

I’m blown away to hear all these bleeding hearts! These kids are in there for reasons, like murder, and just because they’re teenagers, doesn’t mean they’re like 6 yr olds. I personally know of an inmate that took a broom from one of the trustees, snapped it and ran it up the trustees azz! Most of you couldn’t do this job. These aren’t a bunch of kids, these are criminals, violent, gang members, murderers. If they act up and don’t follow rules, they’ve made the decision to bring this on. It’s exhausting work, mentally and physically, but ya, keep defending people you wouldn’t have balls enough to be in the same cell with 5 min. You’ve no idea the violence that goes on in jails/prisons, not just against officers, but other inmates and themselves.

I agree with you. No amount of counseling is going to help the majority of these kids. Its sad. I was a teacher for 10 years in the intercity. These kids have no discipline. @@danielholt6741 It can help but they need to accept help in the first place. Also people should stop thinking this kids are just sad and locked up for shoplifting bubble gum and hug will fix everything. Its sad but how some adults deserve to be in prison and cannot be helped its same for the juveniles. Bleeding hearts are crying that nobody is helping but when you watch for example detention hearings then you find out they are getting ton of helps and army of people go in and bend over backwards to keep them out of the prison. Thing is it looks like system is trying help too much kids are released again and again and again and and returning with new charges every time until they return at 17 with capital murder and its game over.

Let him keep the broom dont give him his food till he give up the broom. No extraction. He just want attention. The problem is isolation. I agree, 5 guy's all geared up was a bit much. The said you're breaking my arm several times. They should have taken the broom and left him alone. They did not have to cover his face, he was not spitting, just telling them that they would not like to be treated that way. Jesus probably said visit the prisoner's because of the violence and loneliness. I pray this guy finds some faith, because when I am alone, Jesus is always with me. I should have died several times in my life, but Jesus saves, and works miracles.

How many extractions have you done? Inmates don't have rules of engagement. CO's do. If they were allowed to just go in swinging, of course it wouldn't take as many. But when someone threatens you with violence, but you still have only half a playboook you are allowed to use, you assign one person per limb, one to the body, and one floater that can see the whole picture and help where needed, it DOES take that many people to prevent unnecessarily injuring the inmate. And no, the news camera crew isn't there regularly, but we can't take a step inside a facility without a camera following us, so even with the documentary crew present, there's ALWAYS a camera up close and personal. Until you've been there, ssshhhh.

What would have been a better way to handle this situation? Myself I wouldn't have opened that door and let him hurt me with the broom. Sounds like he acts out when he can't have his way. So much anger in him. Once that broom was broken he could have stabbed someone with that sharp point. I think he wants and needs attention just like the co said. The officer he saying that doesn't like him is going to keep playing this kid like a fiddle in order for the kid to keep himself locked up. If he's still locked up, I hope he's doing better and not in prison.

You got a ponder on the statement that the kid made to the CEOs accusing them of breaking their arms and then stating the fact that the captain gave the CEOs the authority to snap their little arms and nobody said anything about that so just kind of has your mind run a little bit like what's really going on behind them walls when the cameras ain't rolling
@stillliving5899
@stillliving5899 3 жыл бұрын
I thought the same thing. They could have gone in and taken out the broom and let him be, that's going to far. The kid said several times you're breaking my arm. They didn't need to cover his face, he was not spitting. He did say, how you like me to do this to you. The guards carrying him by his arm's to the chair room could have really hurt the guy. God bless that fella, hope he believes in God, because he needs Jesus being isolated like that, it has to make them mentally strained. If someone commits a crime, they need to do the time, but not be abused or neglected. The prisons that have the least returns, are the one's where they have more social interactions, and are taught a job skill, and exposed to religion, like in that Angola prison in Louisiana. I liked most of what they did, except holding a rodeo open to the public with prisoner's with max secutity crimes, which is not worth putting one life in jeopardy, but they do have much lower repeat offenders.

@Angela Iacobacci You're right -- this boy told us afterward that it was "just another cell extraction" for him. Very sad. Thankfully, the prison implemented a new way of handling with situations like this after this extraction was filmed. They implemented a verbal deescalation team -- counselors who calmly talked kids down when they were upset. A much better way to handle things, obviously! Thanks again for watching. Hope you'll stay tuned for much more ahead!

Of course he didn't like the officer. You can tell that he's being honest. Basically what he's tryna say is the officer would always make him feel worthless. One of the officers knew that it would upset him so they gave him a broom and let him clean his room then they ticked him off. Why give him a broom if you know he's dangerous? Clearly because they wanted to manhandle him and make a extract team to be able to put their hands on him. It could've been prevented if they didn't give him the broom. Why give him a broom with nothing in the cell to clean?
