regarding the apparent outrage surrounding voting for books you have not yet read - here is my argument as to why it’s not really that deep: supporting authors you love (and whose newest releases you absolutely intend on reading) and books are you are drawn to is not an unheard of concept. in fact, it is how most people gain awareness of books and subsequently carve out their reading path. i think even the general public is able to discern that goodreads is not the pinnacle of literary criticism or culture. should we really assign a higher power of democratic voting integrity to a non-transparent award system that, in all likelihood, has the sole purpose of making money for amazon? these are low stakes in which firsthand reading experience should not be prerequisite of engaging in populous book discourse.

and the thing is.... even if you end up not liking the book you vote for, that doesn't mean you wouldn't want to still support that author! goodreads is also a mess with nominating lesser known authors in the first place so that's not really on the voters

Chloe! The person who wrote Iron Widow has a KZbin channel - Xiran Jay Zhao. They are super funny and do commentary on popular movies/shows that contain Asian themes, settings, people, culture, etc. (I think they're chinese, so maybe more that region than others), and I would recommend watching them! Really loved they're review of the Mulan movies and ATLA.

Goodreads choice awards have been kinda crap for a while. I definitely agree they should add more categories instead of removing them like they did this year. Write ins are gone, there's no transparency in how they pick the nominations. While I do agree that people shouldn't probably vote for books they haven't read, so many people do that already and it's just kind of how the gr awards have always been 🤷‍♀️
