Rather than the circle of fifths, I would say you should learn about what notes make up the natural minor/major scale, then learn how triads are constructed from those notes and which triads are within the natural minor/major key. From there look into 7th, 9th, 11th ect chords. The triads you can use in the key of A minor are: A minor, B diminished, C major, D minor, E minor, F major and G major. Understanding why exactly this is, is very important and its not that difficult either.

Planing chords using the same voicing (what you did in the first example) is actually a pretty common scoring technique in games and movies that actually sounds really cool depending on the context.
