I love these pointers. Spot on. The only tip that pains me (as a food safety and quality manager in industry) is the immediate removal of food products from hermetically sealed, air-tight packaging. The expiration clock starts ticking the moment you expose most of these products to air, and the quality of food products begins to decline from that point forward. We suggest not opening packages until first use. Then, you can change containers once the seal is broken.

This is a very good point. I only use canisters for half a dozen items that I use a lot. If you keep a backup of all the things you use most (flour, oatmeal, cornmeal, etc.), just keep the backup in your pantry still sealed and only open it when you need to refill your canister. That way you can have the best of both worlds.

i hear ya, but you know in most houses with kids or teens, they don't stay unsealed long. lol. Growing up we kept a stick of butter out in the butter dish 24/7. I didn't even know you put butter in the fridge until I got married and my husband freaked out because it was out. My mom kept the ketchup, mustard, soy sauce, under the sink next to the cleaning products and we never got poisoned or died...but you should have seen the look on people's faces when they would ask where the ketchup was and we said under the sink...hahahah.

The only problem I have with storing foodstuffs like oatmeal in clear containers rather than the original package is that there are important bits of info on the packages, like directions, exp dates, nutritional info. On my oatmeal, I cut out the directions, including amts, and tape this to the storage container.
@bethschloo7418

You can cut out that information from the packaging. Then you can either tape it to the back of the container or tuck it inside with the food. I have found this helpful.

Another tip is the one touch method. Don’t bring your mail in and sit it on the counter. Just go through it right then and have a small folder for bills you need to pay when you get a second. This will reduce paper clutter so fast. Also don’t set your bag and shoes down, just put them on the hook or where you store the items right away. Don’t take 2 steps when you can cut time and effort and do it the first time. After you go through and do this work of labeling and creating a space for everything to have a place, habits will form and it will continue to get easier and easier to maintain your home.

I have been married 49 years and in this house for 34 years. I keep a pretty organized home. My husband comes in, goes straight to the kitchen table, plunks down his stuff, hangs his coat over the chair, and leaves it all there, all the time. He uses it as his desk. Every piece of mail he has to think about for 6 months will have to sit there, with his other junk. I HATE this so much I just cannot tell you. I have given him many other places to put his stuff, and have asked him if he wants a desk somewhere. He says no. I am doing a whole house declutter right now, cause his uncle died suddenly and was a hoarder. His flat, 3 floors, is full, and filthy. My husband is bringing home boxes and boxes and boxes of paperwork, looking for a will or something to help them settle this estate and sell his properties. You guessed it, he was putting it on the kitchen table. He is also sorting thru coins that his uncle laid everywhere. I made him set up a spot in the garage to keep this stuff. He can bring it in and sort, and then take it out to the garage. He also has a table in the basement where he sorts the coins. I have put my foot down and won't let him leave anything on the table now. He continues to do it. I think it is a passive aggressive behavior that he does just to make me mad. He will put his stuff away when I ask, but leave one thing and claim he did not see it. At least put it on your dresser so no one sees it. If I was younger I would leave him cause he has many of these little behaviors that he does, seemingly just to drive me nuts. What good is it to have a clean and pretty kitchen, when your table and chairs are someone's dump spot? You are so right about flat surfaces. I don't want all this dirty and old stuff from his uncle in my house now, unless it is really a treasure. So far we have just found junk. I am at my wits end, and I am trying to cope by doing a really deep decluttering of MY stuff. I am getting rid of a lot of stuff I no longer need. I will not leave a mess for my kids.

Yes! Labeling is a life saver. I have four kids and a husband. 9 times out of 10. They don't know where things go even if it's been put in the same place since they were born. And my husband will never remember where things go because to him it's not important. If I have all the bins and things labeled then I can say what you want is in the bathroom cabinet in the red bin labeled "pain meds" It saved me having to go physically go get the item or physically go point it out because I can't find it. And when they get something out and it's sitting there and I have to say hey go put this away. I can say go put it in the kitchen cabinet beside the refrigerator in the bin labeled straws. So helpful! Before I started labeling bins I always ended up having to put things away myself just to show one of the kids where it went and then they would conveniently forget the next time they needed to put it away. With labels I can give them the general area in which it needs to go and maybe describe the color of the bin and tell him the exact label that's on the bin.

Yes, you are right but, we are all made different 🎉, so we do things differently. I believe that she has a basement, she can store things there. I don't have any place to store my vacuum so it stays in the hallway. I need the vacuum because I have carpet throughout the apartment. I would store it in the garage, but I don't have one. I would store it in the laundry room, but I don't have one. My broom is store in the slender area between the wall and the fridge, because I don't have space. I don't have an ironing board, because I don't have space. So as much as possible, I do only keep what I use, the rest, I am declutering. 😢

You are not alone friend! And you make a very good point. A lot of these videos (which are great by the way), are done by Americans with houses that are packed with storage. It’s very rare that I come across somebody actually making note of those that don’t have any of these features in our homes and it is a real struggle sometimes. So I’ve learned to watch these videos and adapt them to my lifestyle and to my small home - which is difficult. I’ve learned not to beat myself up and be grateful for my home.

Labeling everything is a great idea. We got to find out last June how nice it is to have even moderately well organized and labeled panty shelves when I went from upright to on the floor, and my poor husband saying "How far out is the ambulance?!!" over and over. They were sure it was a heart attack, I barely made it to the heart hospital an hour away, and it was something worse, and I was in the hospital for 4 days, with most of a month of recovery. My point is that I'm the main "everything in the kitchen" person here, and my husband took over and the system in place allowed him to function in a really stressful & sudden time of change for a while. What might feel like someone went nuts with a label maker might really help others out if there's an emergency. Once home, my job was to get on the computer and do the food order at Walmart for pick up, and he did the rest. We both learned a bunch. I try to find where to learn in each situation. I learned what to be grateful for. :) Anyway, being organized really helped us out.

Things aren’t stacked on top of other things. I can see everything that’s upcoming for school and it just works well for me. I have one for artwork and one for life and things to do. Some thing like important phone numbers stay on the board all of the time. And once a new piece of artwork comes in, something comes off and gets stored away. And when that school party reminds is over, it goes in the trash. The key is not overstuffing them or they’ll look like hanging clutter then you’ll have to do a whole video on that lol. Just thought I’d share what works for me.

I absolutely cannot stand stuff stuck all over the fridge! Ugh! No! Also the appliances on the counter. Nope! My single serve Keurig is the only thing that I leave out. These are all great points Kallie. ❤❤❤❤ Can't wait for the video about hiding cords. I'm sure I will learn something. 😊😊

I agree! My flat surfaces are a constant angst for me! I have a very small galley kitchen and store rarely used items on a shelf in the basement. I try to decant some items but the cabinets are not always the right height. Love that lipstick color on you.

So with you on this. A friend of mine is super organized but… she leaves open food packages around everywhere. Open boxes of cereal, open packs of crackers, open bags of chips. apples in a torn plastic bag on the counter. And clothes, towels and blankets hung over everything. Plus letters, mail, catalogs and flyers on the floor on tables, in shelves. Sure, it can be cleaned up in a few minutes and then things look really great. But why, why, why? Totally stresses me out. I dislike being at her place

I do not mind having my everyday appliances on my counter just because neither I nor my husband will do additional work to bring it in and out every time🤷🏻‍♀️ Also, I will probably forget about them at some point. Another thing, I actually got some discomfort when my counter was empty (I tried to put everything away) I am very visual and hate closed storage😅

The reason visual clutter is stressful is that every item, every pile, etc., speaks to you...the pile of mail says "you need to open me and deal with me!" The shoes on the floor say, "You didn't put me away!" The school papers waiting to be signed/reviewed say, "You were supposed to return me yesterday!" And on it goes. This is not original with me, but I can't remember who said this (maybe The Minimal Mom?).

I think the floors are the most important place to keep clear. It doesn´t matter how clear everting else is if the floors are cluttered, it still looks messy.

How to not be a storage facility for adult children who are still in college. They don’t yet have their own home, and are “sure” they WILL want the stuff, but have no place for it themselves.

Part of my daily "removing visual clutter" includes deciding which of yesterday's clothes should go to the hamper and which should go back to the closet. Among those going back to the closet, I steam the ones that need it. I do it every morning.

For those of us that work long hours away from home, there are no 5-15 minute slots to declutter. There are 7 messy people in my house. Recommendations? I have put baskets in the pantry & it's helped. Trying to get them to let go of junk is a trial!

Labeling is helpful if someone is looking for something who is less familiar with that item or that area of the house. Think your husband trying to find something from your craft closet because he really needs your teeny pliers for something. Or if you are ill and need help in the house from a relative who isn't there often; they can find stuff more easily.

I definitely am tackling my visual clutter recently!! I love your tip on putting appliances and stuff away when you are done using it. Even if you will use it later that day. I used to keep my ipad and my laptop and other tools just floating around the bedroom or on the bed even when I wasn't working. I also need them to last as long as possible so I turn them off and return them to their home when I'm done. It's so nice being able to see the ENTIRETY of my desk. My desk is a huge magnet for visual clutter and it drives me (and my partner crazy lol) so implementing these habits is VERY PRACTICAL. Thank you for the video! I'm expecting my first baby and I will have to come up with an organized system for baby stuff and the things I'll need for recovery postpartum as well. I hope you have a great day! Love the video 💙

My pantry is labelled for where things belong. My other half cannot put something back where he got it from. Puts vinegar back in the oil box. Doesn’t get herb/spice/flavouring difference so he mixes them up. Breakfast items get put back on the stored goods shelf. It does my head in!

Your label maker doesn't waste as much tape as mine does. I wish I had thought to research this before buying one. Mine is a DYMO LetraTag and although I do like it, it wastes tape and unfortunately there is no option to reduce waste in settings. I think I'll start watching more of your videos before I buy stuff like this :) Thanks for another great video!!

Agree except large kitchen items that are heavy and I use daily or more than daily. I am talking about juicer, food processor, blender is actually the smallest and I plan to buy more helpful large appliances. For me, only a kitchen with a “ garage “ or a pantry with counters that I can keep it all out on will work. Other than this, I already have the visual eye to keep things minimal eslewhere.
