perrito ended up being my favorite character in the movie. like, he is so utterly unfazed by the misery and pain of life and all the ways people have hurt and rejected him, its inspiring honestly.

I was also deeply afraid of Purrito upon meeting him because of the reasons you stated. but I grew to love him and the scene where he leans on Puss during a panic attack permanently endeared him to me. I didn't read Purrito as a representation of the obnoxious persistence of life but I love that reading deeply.

I've had some trouble getting out of bed these past few weeks, and I wasn't sure how to articulate those feelings until I saw this video just now. Thank you for saying such lovely things about life and death and kid's films, I hope good things are coming your way.

There is a great thing that happened with Donkey in Shrek that the industry completely dropped. Donkey drove the plot forward. If you take Donkey out, the dragon continues to rampage and the main villain doesn't get defeated. If you remove most of the sidekicks you listed, nothing is lost.

exactly, it's all about integration! i would be fine with the wacky side characters if they didn't feel so tacked on all the time

I really agree with the brief point at the beginning about how we need to interrogate our current standard for children's animated films and shows, which is part of why I really love talking about the themes of this media as a (kind-of) adult with/to other adults! I truly believe that praising what children's animated films do well and (constructively) tearing apart the ones that continue the tired formula of talking down to children could be influential to the industry. Other adults make this media after all, and I think they (hopefully we, someday! Aspiring storyboard artist moment lol) NEED to carefully examine what they are saying to kids and HOW they are saying it; art has so much power. Additionally, I weirdly appreciated you continuing to bash in the "these are made for children" point. I kind of saw it as disrespectful to these films as art at first, but I really thought about it, and SO MANY adult animation fans will take a movie w/ a target demo of little babies that THEY really liked, and claim it is therefore "not a children's movie." It was a huge thing when Pixar's Soul came out, since that movie also frankly discusses death in a mature way, and it is SUCH bullshit. Children can not only handle media with difficult themes told in an artistic way, they DESERVE to experience it too!

imma go watch the tunic video too, yeah (i've played it now so that's probably why i hadn't watched that before)

So glad I waited to watch after I'd seen the movie! I hadn't thought of Perrito as a contrast to Death and now I want to rewatch the movie with that thought in mind :) Will have to watch Bad Guys as well since you seemed to like it! Happy to have finally gotten to this vid so long after it came out.

Let's be clear, the cute sidekick trope is a staple of children's media because merchandising. The reason you probably remember feeling pandered to as a child watching objectively bad media is probably because the main point of the show is not to entertain you, it's to advertise toys

You say that good movies for kids aren't different from good regular movies. But I feel that when you keep saying that it's just "a kids' movie for kids" that you're saying these kinds of movies don't deserve the same level of respect (since you keep saying this around things like spoilers, like the people who care about spoilers generally shouldn't care here). And those two ideas feel incongruous to me.
@letstalkaboutstuff Жыл бұрын
yeah i agree about the incongruity. my consistent harping on the "children's movie for kids" thing was my attempt at keeping the conversation grounded, because so often it feels to me videos discussing kid's movies like this fall over themselves with big praise about how Important and Special and A Great Influence they are. my perspective that a good kid's movie is just a good movie contrasts with this AS a movie made for kids under the current model of kid's movies, and i think it works *in spite of* all the things i dislike about the formula. i find most mainstream animated kid's movies are intolerable in how they play down to the lowest possible common denominator, how even the good ones have these superfluous clearly studio-mandated merchandizeable Extra Guys. but you could also argue that my whole stance here is just insecurity at being an adult choosing to talk about a kid's movie on a public forum. i dunno! i sat on this one for a couple weeks and decided not to massage the contradiction because i think it's cool to be a little bit wrong even when i'm right :P

@@letstalkaboutstuff There's no writ in stone answer to theses things, and i appreciate you sharing this perspective despite the fact that you haven't 100% aligned all the thoughts you've ever had XD i still think this video was valuable and also entertaining!!!

got a lot of thoughts on this video i'll touch on a few rewatches but right off the bat i wanr to bring in the context that the theme comes explicitly from antonio banderas having had a heart attack and confronting his own struggles around the time the movie went on preproduction (my source is an interview in spanish but i'll supply it later if you want)
