The assessment of the "wave" was pretty on-point. My overwhelming thought listening to this song (which is by no means new to me.. but I feel like I feel different things at different times) is just how sad it is that it has to exist to begin with. I don't know if this was conscious from Pac, but there's a juxtaposition between him talking about having fun with his friends in ways that range from trivial to destructive.. and how much that seems to define these friendships, and these people's entire personas (including Pac's).. and then contrasting that to the stark morbidity when Pac thinks about his friends' deaths, and his feeling that his was fast approaching. So much of young Black male persona, til this day, is about developing a front as your main personality, in order to cope with living in a reality where society has sabotaged your life from birth, and you've been forced to live with INTENSE trauma, likely leading to your own death or incarceration. The trauma of living with a life expectancy of 25 or so.. it is deeply sad to be 23 or so.. thinking you're in the final stages of your life.. and the coping mechanisms that become an entire personality based on that.. it's all written into this song. The line "screaming thug til I die before I passed out" may have just been a throwaway (or maybe not).. but it sticks with me. Pac is smoking on the roof (coping with trauma along with his friend), screaming out this persona that he's developed literally until he passes out.. which is exactly how he wound up dying. He lived that persona, screamed Thug Life.. and was killed. But the next line pivots immediately to his friend being dead, and Pac openly contemplates what it means to be left living alone, ultimately to die alone.. which is profoundly sad.. but also just is the lot so many young men in this country are born into. More importantly tho.. it strips Pac of the bravado of literally *just* the moment before. Showing how superficial that aspect of his persona really is. This obv just IS what Tupac was as an artist. A study on honesty and vulnerability (representing an entire generation of Black men in this country), hiding behind a facade.. but a facade that was ALSO very honest even though it was a lie.
