It’s a remote, rural North African village, where huts are made of grass and mud, water comes from the local well, and no one has electricity.
The fastest way to get somewhere is on the back of a donkey and the furthest most people have traveled in their lives is twenty miles.
Arab nomads occasionally pass through and trade milk and meat for the grain.
Everyone looks forward to market day, where they can buy a knife, some homemade candy, or a bottle of cooking oil.
Most have never made it to a larger town, and never will.
Extended family bonds mean everything - these are social societies. Relationships are more important than money.
It’s not an easy life. The desert is harsh and unforgiving, and almost no one can afford shoes. There are no medicines, doctors, or hospitals. Dust storms can cut visibility down to a few feet, and the flies can drive you mad.
But to the villagers, this land is home.
Until there came a war…

When you think about it, this is how most humans lived throughout most of history. Crazy. Makes me appreciate my life more and makes me want to help others more.

I lived almost 80% of that kind of life, and most of the time it was just great and fantastic, with nothing to brag around with but a very beautiful smile and happy with every little that comes on the way. That's why whenever I go back to my village I like to fit back in, because it brings lot of joy to me.

No phones, no cars, no electricity, no television, the most important thing is to hang out with family and friends! It may be better than the alternative for many!

It’s wild that the US doesn’t have anything like this. It would be cool to see just driving along and see a old western town where people are riding around on horseback.

Whats the average age of the elderly? Maybe we can provide them with materials and knowledge to create better homes and lifes for themselves? Or would that be too much of a culture shock
@OurHumanPlanet

They have no idea how old they are. Unfortunately this village could be in almost any developing country in the world - the needs are overwhelming. I like your idea but it might make more sense to focus on the younger people - either via income generating projects or education - because they will then support the elderly (their parents and extended family).

It's copyrighted (PBS) so if you put it into another video and post it on youtube you'll get a strike. If you just want to use it for a private event and you don't sell it publish it on the internet then yes.
