[Life in Daejeon] I spent my 20s in Korea - European 30th birthday party in Seoul

How do people usually celebrate birthdays in your country? In Belgium we usually get together with our friends and family and we have a small party at home. However, now that we moved to Daejeon, and most of our friends live in Seoul, it's hard to invite people to our home. Becoming thirty is an important milestone in Belgian culture, so that's why I rented a partyroom in Apgujeong to celebrate my birthday with my favourite friends and my husband.
Before we held the birthday party, I first met up with my Belgian friend in Itaewon. We first had lunch the vegan restaurant Plant and then we went to the Belgian embassy to vote. I studied politics in university, so participating in the elections is very important to me! Did you know that in Belgium people are oblidged to go vote? They don't actually have to cast a vote, but they do have to show up.
The party room was really cute! It had a beach vibe, so it was perfect for a mermaid-themed birthday party! I ordered catering from vegan restaurant Monk's Butcher. It was absolutely amazing and definitely worth the money! I also noticed a cultural difference between Belgium and Korea. In Belgium people usually don't celebrate their birthday before the actual date of their birthday. Even if the party is a few weeks later, that's okay. But in Korea, people don't usually have their birthday party when their birthday has passed.
사람들은 보통 생일을 어떻게 축하하나요? 벨기에에서는 보통 친구들과 가족을 집으로 초대해 작은 파티를 열어요. 그런데 우리가 대전으로 이사 오고 대부분의 친구들이 서울에 살다 보니, 집에서 사람들을 초대하기가 어려워요. 벨기에 문화에서는 서른 번째 생일이 중요한 의미가 있어서, 내가 좋아하는 친구들과 남편과 함께 생일을 축하하기 위해 압구정에서 파티룸을 빌렸어요!
생일 파티를 열기 전에, 먼저 이태원에서 벨기에 친구를 만났어요. 우리는 ‘Plant’라는 채식 식당에서 점심을 먹고, 그다음에는 벨기에 대사관에 가서 투표를 했어요. 대학에서 정치학을 전공했기 때문에 선거 참여가 저에게 매우 중요해요! 벨기에에서는 투표를 하러 가는 것이 의무라는 걸 알고 있었나요? 실제로 투표를 해야 하는 것은 아니지만, 가는 것은 필수예요.
파티룸은 정말 귀여웠어요! 해변 분위기가 나서 인어 테마의 생일 파티에 딱 맞았어요. ‘Monk's Butcher’라는 채식 식당에서 케이터링을 주문했는데, 정말 훌륭하고 돈이 아깝지 않았어요! 벨기에와 한국 사이의 문화적 차이도 느꼈어요. 벨기에에서는 생일 당일 전에 생일을 축하하지 않는 게 일반적이에요. 생일 파티가 몇 주 늦게 열려도 괜찮지만, 한국에서는 생일이 지나고 나서 생일 파티를 하는 경우가 드물어요! 문화차이가 있는것 같아서 신기했습니다!
