About 57% of the German Autobahn is without a speed limit so I think it's wrong to say only small districts don't have one.
@Anson_AKB
@Anson_AKB 6 жыл бұрын
when talking about speed limits, the problem is the exact wording ... *_all_* of the german autobahn has no *_general_* speed limit, meaning that all speed limits on the autobahn have to be given explicitly by signs, in contrast to country roads and towns which have *_general_* speed limits. when there are signs anywhere (in town, on country roads or on the autobahn), those limits take precedence, and when there are no signs (or if there is a sign "end of limit") the respective *_general_* speed limits apply, which is eg 50 km/h in towns and for the autobahn it is "unlimited". of course there are more additional rules, eg to drive only as fast as traffic and wheather conditions allow, etc, and if you drive "too fast" and an accident could have been avoided by adjusting your speed to the circumstances (and on the Autobahn this may mean to not hugely surpass the *_generally suggested_* speed of 130 km/h) you'll get partial blame and have to pay part of the costs, even when any higher speed by itself (in an unlimited area without limiting signs) is not illegal. _btw: are there no _*_general_*_ speed limits in the USA which would apply automatically when there is no speed limit sign (eg after a ramp or inside towns), and thus there need to be speed limit signs at _*_every_*_ street corner in towns, _*_every_*_ crossing on country roads, and _*_every_*_ ramp or merge on freeways ?_

Nice video :) About the Lederhosen and Dirndln: You live in Southern Germany. So I can understand how you think that Germans like to wear it every now and then. But there also is Northern Germany (or everything above Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg), where the people have never ever worn a Lederhose or Dirndl. Or maybe a single time just for fun. And those people make up 70% of the German population.

What's with the American idea of "The women in don't shave their legs or smell terrible"? I have also heard that one about France, Italy, Japan, and probably every single country the US armed forces have ever been (so basically everywhere). I wouldn't be surprised if the whole thing started as some soldiers attempt to calm down his girl at home, reassuring her that he won't cheat.

Not quite Hatecell! In Europe (all of Europe and beyond) women indeed did not shave their legs or armpits. It slowly started in the late 1950s with the very young ones and progressed from there on to "no hair on legs and under armpits". Our grandmothers, aunties, etc. all did not shave or remove otherwise said hairy areas.

As a German, I just heard of the christmas pickle for the first time in my life. Also the "purity law" as you call it isn't called a law (Gesetz) in German, it's a Gebot (more like a rule/commandment) that breweries set theirselves. So this "lie" comes from missunderstanding the translation. The part with the Autobahn isn't quite correct as more than 60% of it are without speedlimits. But otherwise a good video. Greetings from Germany!

This is a tradition from Europe that was around long before George Washington and the birth of the USA. It has had many variations through the times, but according to historians it started as the "king bean" tradition where they would put a bean in the pudding, and whoever got the bean would be "king" for the day. In the Nordic countries the tradition is putting an almond in the christmas porridge , and whoever finds the almond gets some sort of gift.

The pickle originated in the Spreewald (where pickles are kind of a big deal culturally and the one who finds the pickle first will have good luck in the next year), so yes, it's a tradition that came from Germany. It's just not a general German tradition. Same with Dirndl and Lederhosen - dammit, that's *Bavarians* who wear them. It's...literally not a thing anywhere else (and this is also where a lot of the stereotypes came from - most US occupation troops after WW2 ended up in Bavaria, so they thought that this is what all of Germany is like - it's really not). There are vast cultural differences between the individual regions, and just because something is true for one region, doesn't mean it's the same everywhere else.

I am german and it's so funny to hear what people think about us. The most ridiculous was, that we are all wearing Letherpants and Dirndls I mean I come from Hamburg in the north and the Oktoberfest is in the south and the north and the south are so different. I can't even understand some people from the South we have so many different accents.

something i was missing a lot on all this is "not all of germany is Bavaria" for example the "lederhosen & Dirndl" part. you won't find a single person in the central to northern regions of Germany to wear that. Germany isn't just bavaria and bavarian culture, we have saxons, Friesen, Hessen, Ditmarschner and many other little "clans" with their own odd fashion, language and ticks.

also "age old german tradition" well thats not too far off, bare in mind the germans made up the second biggest part of the colonization of ttodays US. something people like to forget since being "german" was a flaw from WW1 to the end of WW2 and the cold war after that. but indeed it might be (and now i blow your mind) a American tradition of German Settlers! explaining why i have never heard of it as a German.

Alena H Yeah, I actually love how Germans are often stereo-typed like that. I'm from North-Rhine Westfalia which is located in the mid-western part of Germany which borders Holland (or more accurately The Netherlands), and we don't really have anything like the Lederhosen or Dirndl here. It is a mostly Bavarian traditional outfit that doesn't translate to other regions of Germany. Like, at all! But then you watch any movie with Germans in it, best example: The Griswald's European Vacation. Yeah! Nuff said. I would say, I would pretty much look like an American if you saw me on the streets of where I'm from. You'll see jeans, T-shirts, sneakers.... the usual when you're NOT from Bavaria.... And I would even contend that in moder-day Bavaria, that is the typical thing to wear. The Dirndl and Lederhosen are really not worn all that much in Bavaria anymore. I know, because I have a buddy who has a house in Bavaria in a small village, with mostly farmers surrounding the area. And I didn't see any Lederhosen there when I visited way back when. PS: I now live in the USA

@6:33 you might want to fact-check that assertion... The maximum income tax rate in Germany is 42% (but this is a *marginal* tax rate, i.e. it only applies to income in excess of 55000€/year - the effective tax rate over all of your income is lower). The average German pays about 25% in income tax. Even if you add the 7% for health insurance you're still far below "50% tax".

I rode an Autobahn in Munich with electronic speed signs, if they are crossed by a red band it means ‘no limit’. Limited in case of high traffic and rain. I was lucky to have good weather on the 1st day, went up to 180 km/h. Wanted to go above 200 km/h, but had rain the rest of my stay :-( Most dishes I had were variations of pork with potatoes. Some true to that. They are indeed sociable. Beer houses have communal tables where you can seat and start conversation with total strangers. A great idea that should be copied in other countries.

So for number one you need to know, even though there is no speed limit at a certain part of our "Autobahn", there is the so called "Richtgeschwindigkeit". So in case there is no speed limit and you're driving like 120 mph (which would be legal), but you have an accident, your insurance company can say "Well, you were too fast so we're not paying anything" Because even there is no speed limit, you have to drive in a way that you can still keep your car under control or at least react to certain happenings like mistakes from other drivers or deer on the street. That's the Richtgeschwindigkeit, it's 130 km/h or round about 75 mph.

Neil Baker Not at all. Most of germanys tap water is groundwater that only requires very little treatment. A permanent Chlorination of drinking water is therfore not needed. Tap water is actually "drinking water" whereas bottled water doesn`t have to be.

Neil Baker In fact Germany has a law (Trinkwasserverordnung / drinking water ordinance) that sais that water coming out of a tap must be safely drinkable. If not, the tap has to be marked with the warning sign: "Kein Trinkwasser" (no drinking water). So in Germany you can safely drink water out of any tap that isn't marked with a warning sign.

Additionally: There are many factors that feed into the height of a human being such as environmental influences, access to food and social status of your ancestors. Hi. I am German (born 1991). So true everything what you said (exept one thing about the clothes). The christmas pickle really surprised me! Oh, but one thing: I don't agree with you about the Lederhosen and Dirndl: They are not really worn by GERMANS at Fests, but rather worn by SOME people (who are in a little costume mood) at themed Fests, like the "Oktober Fest" and are worn often by "Bayern" (people from Bayern - a "Bundesland" in Germany), who wear them more on the country side, in some hotels, some Cafes and some Restaurants or to Fests. Background: It's part of some cultural heritage from the time when "Bayern" was still part of Österreich/Austria, where they wear Lederhosen and Dirndl themself to many occasions. I hope it helps. Thanks for the video. Thumbs up!

Wait wait wait... about #13... No, we're b asically never wearing Dirndels or Lederhosen. That's something that only happens in Bayern (Bavaria for you uncultured swines out there) and NOWHERE ELSE. Seriously, Bayern is NOT Germany. What happens in Bayern is mostly shunned in the rest of Germany. Nobody ever wears Lederhosen outside of Bayern.

German sounds aggressive? No it doesn't. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe is considered to be the "king of all poets", and he only wrote his poems in German. And they sound incredibly good! And yes... you are right! I watch a loooooooooooot of American shows, really do, but yet, I still never had heard of a "christmas pickle"! It most definitely is not something we, Germans do. Not even close. I know fellow country men from Flenburg to the Bodensee. I never heard any of them talk about a "christmas pickle". Ever. Maybe it's a VERY local thing, but most definitely not something that is "German". It's like saying "witch hunts are an American tradition", while they only were practiced in a few regions in the early colonies.

Universities usually cost between 250 and 350€, you can easily rent a place or a shared flat between 250 and 450€ a month and if you're smart with your budget, 150€ are easily enough for food. So 1000€ tuition would be at the upper end of possibilities in my opinion. Also, we don't have to buy text books here. Books are often recommended but not necessary and if they are, they are usually available at the library. The only books I had to buy were language course books and those were like 20€ per semester. (And 50% taxes only applies if you're in the highest income bracket)

The thing about university tuition is that in the US the students pay the teachers (professors) for the teaching. They do not in Germany -- the professor's salary is funded by the state out of tax money. The stuff students have to pay to the university is to fund student organized services, and for the most part, to pay for general public transportation. Sure you have to factor in rent, food, and books -- but as far as I have observed while working at a US university, some of that was not part of the tuition (and had to be paid on top, as in Germany.) Rent was, at least for freshmen. But as far as I know, all students had to pay on top of tuition for food, books, parking...

About University: In Germany we have no fees for applications, so everyone can apply for free. And University in general is cheap. We have a semester payment (which for me is 152,50€ every six months). You get a really cheap ticket for public transport, also for a whole semester (which is in my case 168,00€). In dorms two people are unlikely to share the same room (I've never seen or heard that a dorm offers that). Dorms are relatively cheap, it mainly depends whether you choose to share a flat with up to 8 (?) people. Also you can have an entire flat for yourself. There are options, however most of the time people just get sorted into their dorms. I pay 235,00€ for shared flat with 2 others, further away of the city-center. The problem isn't fees for uni, most of the time it's the living expenses which are the most expensive (rent, food, transportation and everything else).

Well, the "Studiengebühren" have been abolished a few years ago but you still have to pay "Semesterbeiträge" for you Busticket (it is your duty to pay this, for solidarity reasons.) I pay 126,36 € VRR-Ticket (its a certain driving zone), plus 48,10 € NRW-Ticket (so i can drive through NRW, but no long-distance trains such as ICE or IC) aaand 120,00 € Sozialbeitrag (AkaFö 105 €, AStA 15 €) per semester. Yeah I know, this isn't a lot but (!) I have to get to university by car, because the route network is ... ******.... and you have to pay for your Books, Meals and your flat of course. The german law says that a student has to receive 670€/month from the parents/bafög/etc...but that is far too little! BTW: we do not wear dirndl's in NRW...
