happy one year wedding anniversary to you and jimmy 💞 and I would suggest trying a hobby that is literally energizing, aka an active hobby! You could see if there are any classes or drop ins for stuff like Pilates, yoga, spin classes, or I’ve seen tennis places in Korea. When I started going to volleyball drop ins for fun, I found it really lifted my mood and kept me motivated for the week. It was also nice to meet people. And because you just need to follow the body movements of an instructor if there is one, it could be easier communication wise. Best of luck ✨

I know it can feel embarrassing or like people are judging you because your Korean isn’t native level but it’s important to remember that even though you’re ethnically Korean, you’ve lived most of your life in America! You have to give yourself some grace and remember that there’s no expectation that you should be able to speak Korean completely fluently at all. What matters is you’re trying! If someone not fluent in English was trying to speak to you, you wouldn’t judge them or really bat an eye (especially if you’re at your job). Of course it’s a little awkward and of course people might be taken aback or confused at first, but when you realise no one really cares it’s so freeing. And through that, you can find wonderful people who are curious about you and who are willing to make provisions to communicate with you. If they have a problem with you and make no effort because of that, then that’s on them and they’re probably not a nice person. That says more about them than you. I studied in Korea for a semester and unfortunately, it can feel like a very judgemental place and not all Koreans are used to foreigners. But I learned to own being a foreigner (because that’s what I was). Yes, lots of Koreans were scared or even annoyed to talk to me because my Korean was so bad, but I also found so many servicepeople who were patient and did their best to understand me. If someone was being rude, I just left because there’s like millions of people in Seoul and I’m probably never going to see them again. Eventually, you learn to stop feeling embarrassed and just do the things you want to do! I have faith in you and highly recommend trying classes like pottery with a friend or Jimmy (even if they don’t speak Korean well either). Even try joining more expat/foreigner groups so you can make friends to go with. It’s a lot less daunting when there’s more than one of you!
