Roadtrip ideas in the North East: the road from NY to Montreal is gorgeous you get to see beautiful foliage and in Montreal the Mont Royal Park is all orange and yellow, makes for a beautiful hike to the top ; Driving around the catskills is exceptional, there are nice souvenir boutiques along the way with yummy coffee and donuts ; the drive to Cape Cod and its surroundings = beautiful memories. And if you want to go South a little, driving on a portion of the Blue Ridge Parkway is something to do at least once in a lifetime.

Woodstock is a great weekend trip from NYC, New Paltz as well (look for Mohonk Mountain House if you want a great hotel), Boscobel Gardens is a nice day trip with a beautiful view of the Hudson River, Bear mountain for a longer hike (with views of NYC at the top!).

As a European, I'm intrigued by the lack of curtains in the kitchen and living room - is it common not to have curtains on windows in big cities? I'd feel super exposed without them

It is uncommon not to have curtains. Most apartments come with blinds in NYC, and people who have a little money to spend will usually get additional window dressings for privacy. It's popular to get ones that still let in light- anthropology used to sell paper curtains that were popular (they kind of adhered to the top of the windows). A lot of apartments in NYC don't have too many windows, and apartments with windows come at a sharp premium, so you have to maximize what you have.

IME it's common because people are frequently moving from apartment to apt and apts don't come with curtains so people don't buy them and take the time to put them up! It's more common in NYC than other major US metro areas to not have them. Also ditto the comment about NYers wanting more light in our dark little shoe box apts.

I also just came back yesterday from a 5 days to Maine, we visited Portland, Camden and Bar Harbor, we really enjoyed Camden it was our favorite one and we did 2 hike one at Mount Megunticook (Camden) and the Beehive trail at National acadia park the view was both soo beautiful
