From an Australian living in Taiwan.. Taiwan is probably the closest neighbor to China and has a great deal of medical, business and scientific interaction with China; while maintaining its own democratic government and independent agencies apart from CCP controlled China. It nevertheless, has more access to what goes on in China than perhaps any other neighboring country. Taiwan doctors learned about the emergence of atypical pneumonia cases in Wuhan before the end of 2019, after reports from their colleagues in mainland China in late December; reports that Wuhan medical staff were falling ill after treating Wuhan city residents infected by a mysterious form of pnemonia... a serious indication of human-to-human transmission. Taiwan's Centers for Disease Control (CDC),confirmed sending an email to its Chinese counterpart in order to seek clarification and more information, as well as an email to the WHO on Dec.31 saying that Taiwan was aware of a respiratory illness that had appeared in Wuhan and was very concerned about the possibility of human-to-human transmission. The Chinese counterpart would not clarify the alleged human-to-human transmission, and the WHO did nothing more than simply acknowledge receipt of Taiwan's email. The Taiwan CDC also communicated this information to the WHO's International Health Regulations (IHR) framework on Dec.31. The only response that Taiwan received from the WHO was an email saying that the inquiry would be relayed to the organization’s experts but would NOT be posted on the organization’s internal website for the benefit of member countries. The IHR's internal website provides a platform for all countries to share information on the epidemic/pandemic and their responses. Due to Taiwan's current exclusion from the WHO. NONE of the information shared by the Taiwan CDC is allowed to be put up there. Taiwan’s Center for Disease Control (CDC) said it has email correspondence with the WHO to substantiate its claim about the latter’s inaction. Though the WHO did not publicize Taiwan's warnings, Taiwan decided to immediately take precautions itself based on the information it had. Taiwan fortunately decided that same day to begin screening passengers flying in from Wuhan, and activated its emergency operations center on Jan.2 - a move experts say allowed Taiwan to effectively control the early spread of the virus. It also dispatched a team to Wuhan to learn more about the situation. However that team was denied access to both patients and the market area where the virus was claimed to have originated, strengthening its view on its precautionary measures. If that information and severe concern of the Tiwan CDC had been able to get out to the rest of the world, without being deemed not worthy by the WHO, other countries may have had a similar understanding of the early severity of the situation and been able to act more in accordance with the realistic situation. Inside CCP controlled China, Chinese authorities meanwhile silenced doctors and refused to admit human-human transmission until Jan. 20, with catastrophic consequences. Taiwan was able to handle the situation extremely well due to its at hand information. It was the rest of the global community that is suffering badly now due to the WHO's refusal to make the concerns and findings of Taiwan available to the rest of the world. Such a shame for the rest of the world that WHO continues to restrict Taiwan for political reasons, namely political pressure from Beijing.

Tristan Muller, I do agree with much of that you have written. But I have to say one thing: Now, in early April, despite what the WHO did or didn’t report, the rest of the world is still acting recklessly and ignorantly. You are saying, China did not admit that there was human to human transmission until end of January. It’s now April and one idiotic U.S. state governor (I forget which state!) just said he just learned that asymptomatic people can also transmit virus. So, no matter how much earlier had China disclosed the truth about the virus, as I see it, it would have made very little difference. It’s April 5 already, but much of the world is still not getting the message.

The reason Taiwan has been in control of this thing from the get go is very simple. THEY WERE PREPARED! The scientific experts have been predicting for years that an outbreak like this was coming. The minute they saw it coming, the Taiwanese were honest and open and started testing people and taking steps to contain it. The reason the situation in the US is a total fuck-up is also very simple. Donald Trump is the president. So all the scientific warnings were ignored. Pandemic experts were fired back in 2018 and the NSC global pandemic department shut down. Why? Just 'cos Obama set it up I think. Then tRump lies his ass off for 6 weeks as usual: "It's a hoax. It's nothing, it'll go away like a miracle. We got it under control." Meanwhile no one is being tested, there is no leadership, no preparedness, just the usual tRump BS. But sure, go ahead and find a way to blame the media and the Dems... lol

great capture on life in Taiwan. I live in Taipei (actually New Taipei City). Mat's report was accurate. we also use hand sanitizer in our home and keep things clean. we also have hand sanitizer in our building and people in general don't really worry too much, just follow the recommendations. it's really an eye opener when compared to my US experience. I think the practice Asia has had with SARS, H1N1, etc as well as the cultural norm where the rules aren't really a big inconvenience makes the response really effective. Still only have around 300 cases and most are imports not locals. May get worse, but I think we already are keeping the curve pretty flat.

Taiwan ’s railway or subway stations use infrared images to automatically detect the temperature of passengers, rather than manually. In addition, bus Before every departure, they must be disinfected. Taiwan does a good job, I am Taiwanese.

Just need to clarify that during the interview while the student telling the thing about Taiwan's airport, the screen showed the place people taking the temperature on their forehead and another scene of sanitizing the bus are both NOT TAIWAN. This is misleading your audience. Closing down the country to fight the virus doesn't make sense. The cure is as bad as the problem. We need to fight it intelligently, even if it means curtailing our accepted rights. That's a slippery slope, however. How many Canadians, for example, would trust their PM Trudeau with a move like that!! This guy's experience at the airport is astonishing.
