“I was content with the fact I was gonna die in this tunnel.” As an ex addict that hit super deep. I was perfectly fine with dying up until I actually almost died. Watching my mom cry in the hospital room while I was hooked up to tubes with a 3in by 3in gaping hole in my chest really opened my eyes that my addiction wasn’t just pulling me down. 3 years clean off pills this summer and as of this autumn I’ll finally be clean of methadone. I went from being on a dose of 110mils to now being at 7mils n I’m dropping by 1 every 2 weeks. Sorry I had to share that just incase there’s an other addicts that are content with dying. Trust me when I say it’s worth it to live.

“Eventually everything becomes comfortable if you do it long enough” He is absolutely right. I was homeless in Portland Oregon for 4 years. Portland does have an underground tunnel network that was created in the late 1800’s, early 1900’s. However, our tunnel network does not stretch for miles and miles. It’s probably less then 20 sq miles along the Willamate River. Portland was a port city (thus the name: Portland 😄) and because of the history of our tunnels and stories of men being Shanghai’d into forced labor aboard merchant ships, it’s become a tourist destination complete with guided tours. It’s impossible to live below ground. However, Portland does have many “safe” (yes, safe is in quotes for a reason) places to live if you’re on the streets. What he said struck a chord with me because it is absolutely true. If you’re forced into certain living conditions/circumstances, human nature is to try and make it as live-able and comfortable as possible.i

But the cool part is finding where the graffiti trail ends and finding yourself lost.

Cory the people who know that living in the sewers is even more unhygienic and dangerous than living on the streets, you’re better off living in an abandoned subway station

I was homeless in New Orleans for a long time. Unfortunately there aren't any tunnels but whats worse is the police will beat and rob you and then file false charges on you or plant drugs on you. I was attacked three times by nopd so being homeless in New Orleans is very dangerous. I wish I had had a place to go like this.

These tunnels actually stay warmer in the winter and cool in the summer. As a kid my friends and I would go on runs through the tunnels in the middle of summer when it was 115 degrees out and closer to 75 in the tunnels. Lots of cool graffiti, bats, a few bugs. Never ran into any homeless people but we would only go for about 2 miles and end up popping out at some random place. In hindsight it is pretty dangerous but if you go on a clear day with no chance of rain then the mystery and adventure of the tunnels is very alluring.

I lived in the Vegas Tunnels for 2 years. It helps escape the heat in the summer and they provide warmth in the winter. Everyone down there gets high. Crack, meth, heroin, alcoholics. It barely rains in Vegas so there's only a couple days a year you get flooded out. You don't really feel sorry for yourself because your too busy surviving day to day. I still have dreams of being homeless. I think it's a form of PTSD.
