In Ukraine, more than two years after the Russian invasion, border areas are still coming under massive shelling. A month ago, Russia launched a widespread bombardment of towns and villages in the Sumy region in northeastern Ukraine, using missiles and guided aerial bombs. DW met with residents of a village called Velyka Pysarivka and with former residents, who have fled elsewhere for safety.

Some people remain because they don't want to leave their homes, some are waiting for Russian troops and others are simply tired of moving from a front line town to a soon to be front line town so moving can be futile at times.

Some of the older residents just can't leave due to health issues (physical and mental (depression/anguish)). And you can't ignore that some folks who stay maybe pro-Russian, with family ties to Russia, or old supporters of the former Soviet Union, and feel they have nothing to fear from Russia taking over the region.

If you mean by civil russian soldiers who took the Russian flag off their shoulder. Putin even admitted it after the annexation of Crimea. It's why we don't have a peace deal now. Zelensky said i can't make a peace deal while Putin's little green men are occupying Ukraine. That's why he wanted to be a member of NATO in that deal. Putin wouldn't allow it. Then Putin send his men to attack Donetsk airfield and all talks were over.

Ukraine will face serious difficulties both on the front line and internally in late spring and early summer, the head of the country’s military intelligence, Kirill Budanov, has predicted. The comments come amid reports that both officials in Kiev and Ukraine’s Western backers fear that Russia could breach the country’s defenses. In an interview with the BBC’s Ukrainian service on Monday, Budanov said, “a rather difficult situation awaits us in the near future,” adding that “Armageddon will not happen… but there will be problems.” On April 22, the flag of the Russian Federation was raised in the center of the village of Ocheretino in the Avdeevka region. According to Ukrainian military observers, the sharp break through the defense of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) became possible after Ukrainian soldiers escaped from their positions despite the orders of their commanders. The loss of Ocheretino will have severe consequences for the AFU. The Armed Forces of the Russian Federation have already entered the village of Novobakhmutovka from the northern direction. Russian advance also threatens Ukrainian positions in Solovyovo. The AFU are withdrawing part of the troops from Solovyovo and Novobakhmutovka to the west along the road. After several waves of night strikes, Russian forces continued attacks in the daytime. In the afternoon of April 22, a series of strikes hit Ukrainian military facilities in different districts in the Kharkiv region. One of Russian highly precision strikes destroyed the main TV tower in the city of Kharkiv. As a result of the attack, the tower snapped in half. The local Ukrainian authorities confirmed a series of explosions in Kharkiv. The local media claimed damage to some ‘infrastructure facility’ in the city. Ukrainian authorities tried to hide the damage but numerous videos from the city showing the destruction of the tower destroyed their plan. As a result, the regional military administration admitted the destruction of the tower. According to the local military authorities, the tower was destroyed by Russian Kh-59 missile strike. There are no casualties among the local civilians. The military radio-electronic devices installed on the Kharkiv TV served the Ukrainian military to coordinate the military operations in the border regions of the Russian Federation. In particular, the equipment was used to ensure sorties into the territory of the Belgorod region, in which (sorties) militants of the Main Directorate of Intelligence of Ukraine, supervised by the special services of the West, were involved. According to some local reports, the U.S.-made radio equipment was deployed on the Kharkiv TV tower in 2022. The systems allowed the Ukrainian military to launch reconnaissance operations and maintain communication with command posts in other regions controlled by the Kiev regime. With the help of equipment installed in the upper part of the tower in Kharkov the radio signal covered vast territories in the north-east of Ukraine where the Ukrainian Main Intelligence Directorate coordinated by U.S./British special services launched attacks on the Russian territory.
