Earlier in the film, she is told that all children and older people are gassed in the camps. The women were sorting through the pile of clothes that belonged to the victims who were gassed. So to hear her son’s voice when she thought that he might be dead must have really blessed her.

btw to anybody saying that the humor in the movie/in guido's character takes away from the seriousness, i firmly believe that it was put there to make it sadder. you empathize with guido *because* he's so silly and optimistic and just kind of a goofball. it shows you that the holocaust victims were real people. i'm sure tons of them in real life really had just used humor to win over a girl and start a family, and then they had to go to a concentration camp. it's meant to make guido more human.
@peterauerbach55935 жыл бұрын
The humor was to save his son’s life. Instead of fear, the boy was able to not be traumatized forever. Further, it kept him safe by encouraging him to hide etc.

I think the thing that makes me cry and smile the most is the fact that yes he's a silly, funny guy but he is a good guy, a good father, and a good husband. That's one inconsistency I don't get. How did he know his wife was in the camp along with him if they hadn't seen each other since before they were rounded up. No way he would know she would admit herself to the camps
@antoniocortese79516 жыл бұрын
Dude, then you either didn't really watched the movie or you watched it but missing some important parts. When Guido was taken away (along with his son and father) Dora went to the station were the train was leaving and asked to the SS officer to go on the train with her family. Even tough she got into a different carriage Giosuè saw her and pointed her to his father which saw her too. Then after the arrival at the camp, while men and women were being separated, Guido for a brief moment managed to sneak to the side of the train were women were being taken and even called her, before being pushed back to the man group by the SS

My family is Italian-American, and I remember watching this movie as a kid with my uncle and learning for the first time about the Holocaust’s effects on the Italian people. The film has always stuck with me because of the dad’s humor and resiliency, doing everything in his power to help his child thrive and survive in these hardships, up until his death. It’s a heartbreaking story, but through the child’s eyes (thanks to his father) we do experience the title- life is beautiful.

This movie defined a huge part of my life. I saw it when I was young and made me realize that was something special about cinema, about the way you could tell a story. A few years later It was the first movie I show to my highschool girlfriend, she love it and we talk a lot about it and were always making references to it. I used to call her "my princcipesa". Fast forward 20 years, we met, we start talking. We grew closer and closer. She was married to a husband who beat her and abuse her. He was a police officer in the local town, he control everything she did and her phone. She decided to leave him and come live we me. The day she was ready, this scene was the signal she posted in FB for me to go get her :) we've been together for two years now, and we will forever, I still call her " my princcipesa" every day.
