It’s based on a true story. I know a woman who was a child in Germany at that time. She was hidden in a convent. Her father was killed. I also knew two people who were the only ones in their families to survive. One survived a death March.

The last riddle has no solution. I'm Italian and the riddle in the original language doesn't make sense with the proposed solution. The doctor struggling with the riddles represents the intellectuals or in any case the "normal" people who in that period in Europe had no idea of the gravity of what was happening and were engaged in frankly useless things.

Maybe someone gave the doctor an unsolvable riddle to watch him suffer. Well, in the doctor's case, he really might not care about the Jews. Or he's in complete denial about the things happening around him.

@@henryellow He simply does not realize what is happening around him, in fact there is the paradoxical situation where he asks Guido for help, when it is Guido who needs help.

In my opinion the doctor represents "the banality of evil": a gentleman catapulted into hell who takes refuge in riddles to pretend not to see the reality that surrounds him. Certainly a negative character, who does not want or does not have the courage to make the right choice, but above all tragic and miserable in his childish withdrawal from reality. As regards the riddle, the production confirmed that there is no solution, but someone tried to solve it anyway: the interesting solution would be precisely the stereotype of the Jew, "yellow" like the star he was forced to carry and with movements and gestures typical of how he was depicted by nazi propaganda.

@@pietrobarile7110 In general, the interpretation is that of a cultured person who does not realize what is happening around him and this is underlined precisely by the riddle to which he insistently dedicates himself but is unable to solve. According to some, the answer could really be "the duckling" but whoever asks the question is using his power to also exclude the correct answer: metaphorically, it is the very rules of civilization that have disappeared in the dictatorship.

@@JoutenShin Well, in any case the doctor was an SS man in a concentration camp, he wasn't a civilian who could even pretend not to see the violence of the nazi regime: he necessarily had to have a certain level of awareness of what was happening around him. Then of course, the fact that in himself he was a good man led him to take refuge in the magical world of riddles, but it didn't stop him from continuing his terrible "work"; nor does he even think for a second about helping Guido and his family to get out of there or at least to get better treatment. For this reason I like to think that his veterinary friend wanted to play a joke on him (a cruel joke, of course), proposing a riddle that seemed to refer to an animal, but which instead referred to the people that the doctor saw every day (therefore, we can say, he had the solution before his eyes) and over whom he had the power of life and death, just like with an animal. In fact, the nazis considered the Jews precisely at the level of beasts, or rather, parasites to be crushed.

Some concentration camps were worse than others. Jasenovac would be considered one of the worst during WW2.

07:56 - 08:08 In Italian it's a little bit different..they had to adapt it in the english subtitles. It's actually"7 minutes"because"minuti"in Italian means both"minutes"and"small"so Snow White among the dwarfs is among 7 small people AKA among/in 7 minutes. 11:36 - 11:41 😂This one actually made me laugh!Nicoletta Braschi is an *awful actress* but this line actually made me laugh! 13:19 - 13:22 Not usually!😅Roberto is a special kind of guy! He's mad as a hatter and we love him for it! 💚🤍❤ 18:02 - 18:17 The actor was 5 years old when the movie came out.👶

Fun fact: Nicoletta Braschi (Dora) is the real wife of Roberto Benigni. He dedicated her the Oscar that he wins in 1999 as Best Foreign Language film. You need to see the premiation! kzbin.info/www/bejne/bpS3g2mcoJ2ZqNUsi=CfE2oHI2wDJ6GgIk
