November 19, 2023 Bishop Carlton D’Metrius Pearson, one of the most popular and influential preachers in America and around the world, who sacrificed everything for a message of unconditional love and acceptance by God, died peacefully the night of November 19, 2023, at the age of 70, after a brief battle with cancer that had returned after first defeating it 20 years ago. He was surrounded by his family. Moving to Tulsa in 1971, to become a student at Oral Roberts University, Carlton was invited by Oral Roberts himself to join the World Action Singers on his nationally-aired TV specials, eventually becoming an associate evangelist with the Oral Roberts Evangelistic Association in 1975. In 1977, Carlton launched his own ministry, Higher Dimensions, Inc., traveling the country with a small ministry team. In 1981, with the help of his college roommate, Gary McIntosh, Carlton started Higher Dimensions Evangelistic Center, with 75 people attending its first service in Jenks, Oklahoma. Quickly outgrowing the small, storefront location in Jenks, Higher Dimensions eventually settled at 8621 South Memorial Drive in Tulsa, becoming an integrated, multi-ethnic, cross-cultural congregation of more than 5,000 members. A national television program launched in the mid-1980s, “Everything’s Gonna Be All Right,” expanded Carlton’s outreach to a national and international audience, becoming at that time one of only two African American preachers with a nationwide television ministry. His annual AZUSA Conference, begun in 1988, became an international movement, giving national exposure to a number of preachers and gospel singers, bringing together believers of all denominations, cultures, races and walks of life. The annual conference attracted as many as 70,000 people to Tulsa each year, generating tens of millions of dollars to the Tulsa economy during the week-long conference, as well as smaller weekend conferences held across the country each year, such as Los Angeles, Atlanta, Philadelphia, San Jose, Tacoma, Buffalo and even Durban, South Africa. His “Live at AZUSA” albums were nominated for multiple Dove and Stellar Awards, winning three Stellar Awards for “Carlton Pearson Live at AZUSA 2: Precious Memories.” On the opening night of AZUSA ‘96, a group of pastors and bishops recognized his leadership by declaring him “a bishop in the Lord’s church.” The opening night of the following year’s conference, Bishop Carlton Pearson was officially consecrated in an ecclesiastical ceremony as the Presiding Bishop of the AZUSA Interdenominational Fellowship of Christian Churches and Ministries, establishing oversight of thousands of churches and ministries all over the world. He gave counsel to multiple U. S. Presidents, as well as a number of international presidents, kings and other leaders, who were won over by his intelligence, charm, humor and kindness. At the height of his popularity, Bishop Pearson had a shift in his theological beliefs, and began to preach that Jesus did not just die for and save Christians, but for all mankind, and that no one goes to hell as we’ve known it. This became known as “The Gospel of Inclusion,” a form of Christian theology known as universalism. This shift in belief caused churches, upon whose stages he once frequented, to close their doors to him, shut down his annual conference and caused his church to dwindle from thousands to only dozens. His theological shift was dramatized in a major motion picture, Netflix’s “Come Sunday,” starring Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years A Slave), Danny Glover (The Color Purple, Lethal Weapon), LaKeith Stanfield (Judas and the Black Messiah, Atlanta) and Martin Sheen (Apocalypse Now, The West Wing). Carlton’s message and example of unconditional love, though it gained him the moniker of “heretic” by some in the Christian church, had a whole new world opened to him as a result. Non-Christians, as well as Christians who had left the church as a result of church hurts, abuse, hypocrisy, etc., loved the new message of love, healing and restoration. He leaves a legacy of love through the multiplied thousands of lives he touched during his time on earth and the impartation of grace and mercy he preached and exhibited to everyone he encountered. I still remember you singing, "I Want to Live So God Can Use Me" in the talent show when no one else dared sing a gospel song in front of their peers! Who bewitched you sir? 😢 If hell does not exist why the hell are we striving to go to heaven? Why did Jesus have to die horrendously to save us, from what and where? These thoughts crossed my mind also that the doctrine of inclusion took you through a very dark and painful season of your life through much loss and disconnections of many in the body of Christ that you were in covenant relationship, who turned against you. I pray that you found it in your heart to forgive, release and bless those who turned away from you. My desire is to see you make Heaven. God will not violate anyone’s free will to choose Life, Him, or death, our own ways, thoughts and imaginations. In many cases I wish that He would, but, He, will not. Angels have free will as do we. No hell? Humph. Unrepentant, you’re soon enough to discover; notwithstanding, it will be too late. The saddest words, Carlton: LOST FOR ALL ETERNITY AND FOR ALL ETERNITY SEPARATED FROM GOD. Incidentally - after your online tête-à-tête with Dr./Apostle Spence Ledbetter, you would have repented. Obviously not. “But when a righteous man turns away from his righteousness and commits iniquity, and does according to all the abominations that the wicked man does, shall he live? All the righteousness which he has done shall not be remembered; because of the unfaithfulness of which he is guilty and the sin which he has committed, because of them he shall die.” -Ezekiel 18:24

When I heard that you’d been ostracized by the church(heard in 2021), I was stunned! I’d already left church and ministry in 2000, 21 years earlier, bc I’d simply seen far too much, for too long that I knew wasn’t God. I left my marketing post at the current church I was in and out I went. I have never ONCE regretted leaving: NOT ONCE. When I began to investigate why you’d been shunned, I was shocked but not surprised, because everything you were saying, I’d come to question back in ‘97-98. The lies, deception and untruths, along with so much more, my conscious and my heart for God and Jesus’ teaching wouldn’t allow me to stay. I started praying for you then, because I knew the religious vipers would never stop gnawing at you and that you needed to get through this and toughen up under the Hell they dispense: they’re excellent at kicking their own to death. Sir, I love you. Been following you for some time now. You’re the first person who prophesied to me, right after graduating from college. I still remember the prophesy, way back from 1990! It’s been a long journey for me, but I wouldn’t trade a thing! I love you. I’m standing w/you and I am grateful for your ministry. I bought all your writings since you left the religious tangled web. They’ve blessed me bc they affirmed every thing I’ve learning in my deconstruction. I had no one to assist me or who would /could, but the Spirit never leaves us and I simply trusted and remained open. You, along with others that I discovered, literally fell in my lap with books, videos, etc., confirming(not that I even sought for any) all that I was learning, perceiving, seeing, hearing from within me. You Sir, are much appreciated, much needed and much loved and adored. The WOKE know who you are and live the messages that you share, because they’re open wide to what the Universe IS and OFFERS. LOVE YOU BISHOP! Prayers continue for you. You’ve already left a wonderful legacy in the Earth. If you must go, and one day we all will, ours is the continue to allow our conscious to expand and assist others who are awakening and those whom we walk alongside. I feel so much love for you Bishop Pearson. Your condition was an unpleasant surprise tonight, I must admit. But your light is glowing as brightly as ever. You don't know me, but you are the one who caused me to stop and really inquire what I believe and why. Your courage to stand up and face down the monster that "church folk" can be at times has been an indescribable inspiration to me and has changed the whole world for the better at this critical time in the spiritual evolution of mankind that I see is happening right now in front of my very eyes. I never thought I of all people could be so excited and curious about God. Remember my first time seeing you on TV in my mid teens. You were on TBN. Many years later, I remember hearing you were coming to Colorado where I reside. I was so excited to say the least. You were the first Black man I saw on tv preaching the Gospel, and loving the Lord for real. You came to Heritage Christian Center so many years ago. I always loved how you would preach and tell a quick joke!! I enjoyed how you would give the Greek or the Hebrew meaning of words in the Bible.
