I've never bothered to post a comment on youtube. But I felt i would do so now. I completely understand the disappointment of not feeling that you are "growing". Very natural result of all the effort you are expending. All I can tell you is that i stumbled on your channel when I started to "dare to dream" about living on a boat. Seeing you and your kids made me realize that it can be done (my kids are grown and gone but would come visit). And unlike some other channels which are very polished, you make this all seem very very doable. There's a realism to your channel that give me hope that someday, I too can live a sailing life. If I should ever be lucky enough to start that life, I hope I get to meet many down to earth people like you. Thank you for letting us into your world.

I've been following your videos for the last year or so and do enjoy them. Your comment about some viewers threatening you reminded me of a situation that happened to me. A few years back I frequently visited sailboatowners.com. Once I placed a comment about peering into the open engine hatch of a neglected boat a few slips down from me in the harbor. The owners were intentionally allowing the 31' boat to slowly fill with water so it would sink allowing them to collect the insurance. They had boasted in public that was their plan. At the time I looked into the open hatch, the water was up to the two cylinder diesel and contained vast amounts of oil, which would ultimately spread across our small harbor. I called the Coast Guard and reported the situation. My mistake was sharing my action with viewers on sailboatowners.com and numerous people attacked me personally. They accused me of trespassing, outwardly hoping I would be arrested. I was amazed at how viciously they attacked me. Because of that I placed a comment on that website that I would not be back and the owner contacted me, asking that I reconsider my decision. I declined and haven't been back since. Here's the irony.....I had sold the boat to the two owners a few years earlier....they had become disenchanted with the responsibility of owning a boat so they decided to help it sink. It was in perfect condition when I sold it to them but sadly in the end it was nearly worthless due to their neglect and abuse. So be careful.....there are many armchair experts out there just waiting to pounce on you.

Thanks for your honest efforts. I am from Turkey . My wife and ı bought a 32 footer in 2015 august. as it is a 1983 model there are lots of things to fix or renew. Sailing , cruising, racing ; all of them are fun. but in reality most of our time on boat is consumed by maintanence and getting her ready for sea. I find your videos very helpfull and educating. There are many valuable hints for those sailors WHO are trying to keep their boats seaworthy. Thank you very much again for sharing. May the fair winds be with you.

Your not asking too much. I will work to spread the word a bit though my sphere of influence is pretty limited. Your solution to the chain locker was very clever. Using a slow cure and doing it in layers was the correct move. Heat and deformation of sole of locker would be a concern if you tried it fast and all at once. It's interesting how small details on a boat's design can happen like a chain locker that doesn't drain. So much of the boat is so right, hull, decks, sails, masts, etc., that a small thing like that is kind of shocking as was the table challenge. Nice fixes.
@lifeislikesailing8 жыл бұрын
+Bruce Kratky Thank you for sharing and I appreciate your efforts! I figured that layers for the epoxy was better and I'm glad I did it that way. It was such an easy solution to get the angle I needed and shows that if you just take a little time to think it through these projects aren't too difficult. :) Yes, it sure is crazy how a boat can be made so well and then a little silly thing like a chain locker drain is off?? lol

I've recomended your channel to a few people I know when I discoverd that they had been infested by the sailing fever. Like me they're from land locked Switzerland and stumbled over the cruising world here on youtube. I enjoy channels like yours and Mads channel for many reasons, one being thier relative small number of subscribers. You reply to so many comments on your videos and I think that connectivity is worth more than better adsense revenue. The lack negative and primitive comments on the "insider" channels always melts away with increasing subscribers. Fair wind and following seas

You do a good job on the details and I can tell you are ( like myself ) somewhat of a perfectionist ! I'm excited about his new boat and look forward to all of the projects that will need to be done on it. I guess you will need to get another boat pretty soon because you have about finished all of your projects on the boat you have. I bet your boat is already the envy of the marina now ! I guess you could cut it in half and add about 8 feet in length, but that wouldn't take you but a couple of weekends and a few more videos to cover it ! LOL Keep up the good work my friend and I will continue to spread the word ! Fair winds !

Hi Alfy, Like a lot of your subscribers I find your channel outstanding...... the content is interesting and varied between jobs on the boat, sailing and touristy things. I enjoy them all immensely and I like the fact that your boat is what I consider that perfect size. Small enough to sail by yourself, big enough to take the whole gang or sail off to the far and exotic (or just around the corner) and being the same size as my boat its relevant to me. Done! Really enjoy your videos. I grew up in Halifax sailing off the coast of Nova Scotia. There were lots of C&Cs around (still are). Great boats. I love Vancouver. If the housing every becomes near reasonable or realistic again we hope to retire in the area (my daughter lives up on Harwood St.) Your videos are interesting. A good mix of practical stuff and enjoying the sailing life ( we actually loved the museum vid). When not doing sail vids Vancouver is such a unique and interesting city perhaps a few more vids exploring the market at Granville Island, a bit on the crazy humonguous choices of eateries from jappadog to Vera's burgers ;-) a little native history, or sailing history of the area and short explaination of the BIZARRE housing market in the area(why some live on boats and the Tiny House movement). OH BTW you cannot complain about Canadian taxes to someone living in Denmark.... hasnt Mads told you that yet? ;-) Keep up the great work and I will continue to "thumbs up" and share.

Nice job Alfy, you should have painted the underside of the locker lid, and when you had the epoxy mixed repaired the edge of the locker on the starboard side where it is damaged if you use some colloidal silica in the mix it will make the epoxy stiff so it doesn't flow and will stay put till it cures.
@lifeislikesailing8 жыл бұрын
+sailing cacique Thanks and yes I ended up paint the uderside of the lid later, but I still want o clean up the hinges and replace the nuts and bolts. Yep the relief valve. Often overlooked. I remember frantically searching for the source of RUNNING water. When I calmed down and thought about it and listened for where the stream was coming from that's what it was. I thought I broke a through hull for a few scary moments.

Hey Ally, you really have some creative ideas, must be the artist in you. The chain locker fix was so simple to do if one were to think about it. Putting the anchor and chain in the stern...great idea. Simple but did the job just fine. When the video started I was thinking you might epoxy a wooden wedge in there, but no you had the better idea...congrats. Now this is not a criticism, but a simple question. You keep your boat beautifully maintained, hell you even painted the bilge because you had left over paint. So as I watched the hot water heater replacement I wondered why, after removing the old heater why you didn't paint that locker? Best always..Jack
@lifeislikesailing8 жыл бұрын
Yes, sometimes the solution is simple if you just take the time to figure out a plan. :) Well, I did make a small upgrade to the locker that has the water heater, but I haven't shown everyone yet. I didn't paint the whole area because that paint is pretty slippery and the inside part of the hull of that locker is where I had to put my foot prior to a little upgrade I made. My foot would just slip if it was painted I think. Plus I was out of paint. haha

Another great video Alfy...Well done. Your repair to the chain locker was well thought out. How long did you wait between the coats of epoxy?
@lifeislikesailing8 жыл бұрын
+James Ciotti Thanks! It was a pretty easy and straight forward project once I started. :) I waiting one day between layers of epoxy. :)

I really enjoyed this video. You had an ingenious solution to repairing the chain locker by moving weight aft and leveling the bottom of the locker. I also liked the fix on the table; like you said " should have done it sooner" but one less irritant is a plus. Having never lived on a sail boat I have a question; is the grey water from your galley sink and bathroom shower etc. pumped over board while in the Marina or what?
@lifeislikesailing8 жыл бұрын
+Thuddriver01 Glad you enjoyed the video and yes sometimes the solution to fixing something is really obvious and really easy once you put some thought into it! lol Yes, the grey water (sink, shower) goes overboard, but the black water doesn't. :)

Looks good! BTW, that hole is way to small (don't ask how I know), it will get clogged with sand from the anchor, might be a better idea to enlarge it a little..
@lifeislikesailing8 жыл бұрын
+Rum Reach Thanks. I am thinking the camera has somehow made the hole look smaller than it is since I have had a few people say it is too small. It is actually a decent size so I will just see how it goes and I can always make it bigger later if it is an issue.

Good video; I was thinking of inserting a wooden plug into the chain locker drain hole but your idea of re-drilling the hole from the outside was much more clever. Likewise, for the latch you used under the table leaf!!! I thought you might use some white cable ties to mark every 25-ft of chain, but it looks like you have minimal chain...I keep watching your videos but don't subscribe because I'm trying to keep track of all the people that I'm following, by memory, in my attempt to slow down the aging process. I know a guy, my age, whose wife is 21-yrs younger and she has developed dementia and has started walking down the mall, talking with strange guys or perhaps the ceiling, while he's in the restroom...5-5-5=ha,ha,ha...Talk about a 'pain in the bow'!!! And, I'm terrified of hackers, since I'm retired and currently living in a foreign country, NOT CANADA...But, the savings account is increasing and I'll be sailing, full-time, eventually...
@lifeislikesailing8 жыл бұрын
+donjvalley Thanks! I have about 45 ft of chain and since I marked every 50ft I didn't need to mark the chain. :) That is good you are doing what you can to keep your memory fresh! :) Glad to hear the savings are growing and hope you can get onto the water soon! :)

Hi, I think that you produce very high quality videos. Good filming, and informative content. I will gladly share your channel with my friends! The interaction between you and your viewers is impressive, I think that matters more than how many subscribers you have! You should set up a patreon account and use it discreetly like mads is doing. That could help with motivation. I'm looking forward to seeing a new sailing video soon! :) All the best

Hey Alfy nice Video! Could you do a Video about what you miss from living in a house and what things where better? I know already a lot of pro´s about being a liveaboard but i never hear people talking honestly about the con´s. And as I´m not a sailor (yet) I´d like to know more about (radio) communication and navitation - how´s that beeing done? And please don´t change a thing about your videos - I really appreciate the way you explain HOW you came to a solution! Thanks a lot! Flo
@lifeislikesailing8 жыл бұрын
+vomKuckucksfelsen Thank you! Of course I could do video about the pros and cons of living of a sailboat. As for what I actually miss about living in a house....nothing yet. lol I lived in a house for all, but two and a half years of my life since I have been aboard Moonshine. Although in the past I have touched on the topics you mentioned I will add the other things to the video list, like radio and navigation to see if I can give a little more information about it. I usually find taking time to come up with solutions for the projects means means a much easier time completing it. :)
@vomKuckucksfelsen8 жыл бұрын
+LifeisLikeSailing - Vancouver, BC thanks for the reply! Yeah I really enjoyed your video about installing your new vhf but being a ham radio operator i know already a lot about the technical stuff. What I´m interested in is how you operate the radio, which channels to choose, the rules and so on. Do you have a shortwave (ssb) radio as well? And for the navigation part i see a lot of videos where the skippers jus use an ipad or chart plotter but never explain the basics about navigation at sea. I guess there´s a little more behind it compared to using a car navigation device lol :) Nice to hear that you don´t miss anything as liveaboard. For me I really like the idea of living aboard a sailboat but I guess I´d miss all my ham radio gear and especially my workshop :D Thank you so much for sharing!
@lifeislikesailing8 жыл бұрын
I don't have SSB on the boat, but would like to get trained and have one eventually. :) When I am out this summer I could go over how I plot a course prior to doing it. :) Yes it is a little different than car navigation. lol

Hi Alfy! Great job with the chain locker. Can't believe that the temperature was even enough for the epoxy at this time of the year :) We had some snow the last days in Germany :( Did you coat the new hole you drilled in the bow with epoxy too? I was wondering if there is the danger that water gets into the fiberglass.
@lifeislikesailing8 жыл бұрын
+Captain Sailnator Thanks! Yes, we have been getting some really great weather already with one day around feeling around 27 Celsius! The new hole that I drill was in the epoxy so there with be no water seeping into the wood for sure. :)

I know they like your channel because they watch most of the sailing channels with me and we enjoy them. So sending new people to sub and will be making sure people I know who watch your channel are subbed too. Did you do anything to "seal" the bow where you drilled the drain hole from the anchor locker? I'm just curious how you keep water from soaking into the freshly drilled hole.
@lifeislikesailing8 жыл бұрын
+S/V Pau Hana (Sailing Vessel Pau Hana) Good question, the drain hole was already there so after I fill it with epoxy, I drilled through the epoxy with a slightly smaller bit than the original hole so the water will only contact the epoxy. :)

Excellent video Alfy as always! I will continue to promote your channel to like minded souls (and some that ain't! ). Your approach to gain more subscribers is very honorable . I have to declare that I'm no fan of the patron way of producing a revenue stream like some well know "sailing channels" . It takes it from a "Hey guys I would love to share this with you" , to "hey guys I'm making these vids to support my life style choice" . That said, if a person wishes to throw in some shekels and pay for content there's a big big onus to deliver regularly and quality content to boot. It becomes entertainment..... Whats your ethos for your channel? You are likely to be aware of a sailing channel Keep Turning Left. If your aren't I strongly recommend it . Dylan's take on sailing and the British coastline is unique , and unashamedly asks MOBs like me to chip in a quid or two, which I willing do, as it's first class video photography and a history lesson usually thrown in. I would happily contribute to yours and Mads channels. I'll leave those who thinly disguise sex to sell their sailing channels to the people of this world who seem to have something missing from their lives. Sorry for the ramble........ Jack.
@lifeislikesailing8 жыл бұрын
+Jack Gates Thank you Jack! I really appreciate your support by sharing the videos and yes I have the same struggle with some channels that ask for financial support. Of course if a channel is established and has delivered great consistent content for some time, by that I mean a 'proven' channel...then I would have no issue with them asking for some $$ support as a little give back. I can certainly appreciate the hard work and time it takes to make the videos. I totally agree with you about the channels that border line 'whore out' their girlfriends or wives in an effort to gain more views, more subscribers and more money. I would much rather keep my lower numbers and have quality viewers like you and all the others that follow my channel over making a few more bucks! That was my ramble so you didn't feel you are alone on this topic. haha

@lifeislikesailing8 жыл бұрын
+Cawffee _Tyme I have looked into it, but it seems going onto Patreon could be the start of the end as I have seen so many negative comments when people start a Patreon account. I really don't get it, because I can appreciate the hard work and effort it takes for these channel to make the content, but too many people out there hate the idea of paying anything for it. Maybe one day I will consider it and how to best deliver that announcement. :)

Great job on the anchor locker! I think your worrying about the wrong things on subscribers I only have 100 course I just film with an old camera and post it on you-tube don't know how to do what you guys do but admit yours are really good. the thing I notice is if you hold the mouse over the person's name it tells about them I look at all unless like Delos that might have a 100 comments and you will notice that almost all of them don't have any post or none on boats they just like to look at video's I guess and comment to people, the negative one's have nothing to do in life so comment to get attention. Your video's are just as clear as Delos's video's and he makes $500.00 per video! Most watch his because of what there doing mostly WHERE there at. I like yours way better and Mads, Curtis and the ones that are doing stuff on there boats. I can watch National Geographic if I want to see some city. But like you just did with your table THAT helps someone and wouldn't cost them an arm and leg.Don't worry about how perfect your video's are or you'll never go boating again! I think I'm writing a book, One you don't have I think you might like is- junkming he goes boating!

We are not much help monetary wise, neither do we use any platforms other than that we have a KZbin channel, but we have been subscribed for some time now and we really enjoy all your videos. It was great not to hear you beg for money like so many are doing these days. You keep them clean and reasonably professional, yet real; no #@%&^* this and #@%&^* that, and also some guys just don't care to sell their wives and girlfriends all over the place to total strangers; people don't realise that once you do this you cheapen yourself and drop your standards. We have been subscribed to some channels, but once they do this, we leave. Keep up the good efforts.

+Big round watermelon Thank you and I appreciate you kind comments! Yes, I feel for now that I want to just make the videos for fun and I am happy with just posting them on YT. I am glad you see that the videos are 'real' and I am not trying to make the channel something that it is not. I agree that some people will do just about anything to 'sell' their channels and it sure does cheapen it. Far winds to you and thank for watching!

+LifeisLikeSailing - Vancouver, BC, There are many good things about your channel, and one thing, is that it is small, I've often noticed that how you often if not always respond back to the comments. This is what many of the others, just can't do. And by the way, I did like your solution for getting the slope in the anchor locker.
@lifeislikesailing8 жыл бұрын
Big round watermelon I really enjoy reading the comments and replying to the comments so I get a lot out of that. :) The locker solution ended up being quite simple after giving it a little thought. :)

I suppose that even though you don't have the 'numbers' such as others do, you then get the chance to get to know people. There's no point in having thousands of subscribers, you can't really get to know them. Plus your kids are worth much more than all of them anyway. You have grown on my wife and I over the while. Having a stable income, comfortable home and great kids, you really have lots to be glad about. I have had four kids, two have left now, and my wife and I live in a double decker bus with a hard annex and carport joined to that, in what I think you guys call a 'trailer park', what we would call a caravan park. But we are very happy, because we understand that these simple things really are the better things.

I don't think you are asking too much at all. I will do what I can to help. I would love to build subscribers as well, but I know why I haven't been successful yet. Frankly, my videos suck! lol. I also need to get in front of the camera and be more personable. My real personality has yet to show through in a video. Also, unfortunately a lot of the sailing channels that are wildly successful rely on the old "sex sells" aspect. You and I don't have bikini clad women on our channels. Maybe if I slip into one of my wife's bikinis for the next video... Haha. You welcome us into your home when you make these vids and I appreciate that! I can't wait until I can do some bilge coat. That pure white looks so much better than the rusty/grimy look I've got going on in my bilge.

If you are wary of Patreon, how about a paypal account for donations? I know I have derived value from a lot of your videos, and copied some of your solutions, so would be happy to at least buy you a virtual beer.
@lifeislikesailing8 жыл бұрын
+Rule_303 I have explored that option for in the future for things like, if I need a better camera or possibly a drone on day. Then set up a donation account for viewers to help out with a specific item. That way that the viewers would directly benefit from the better video quality and content. I think people could buy into that more and really that is what I would want any money I received to go to. Although a virtual beer sounds great too! lol
