My control head is mounted by the helm, but you are so right about it being further forward you can manage a singlehanded tack easier when you are between the winches not starting from behind the wheel. Does the unit allow for a slave to be fitted so you could have both positions covered? Very chilled video by the way.

Hi Alfie As the only boat I've owned came with an AP I can't imagine being without. Especially for solo sailing. The only advantage of mounting the control where you did is the weather protection for yourself. I agree with the other posts that when you need to disengage immediately it may be out of reach. Ours is an older unit we can de clutch but it makes a horrible racket if the motor is still trying to control the boat and probably hard on it, not sure if yours has a cutout or not. Cheers Rob
@lifeislikesailing7 жыл бұрын
Hey Ron, I can't believe that the two sailboats I have owned both didn't have auto helm. haha I have wanted it for so long and I am very excited to see how much easier single handling the boat will be from now on. :) I do have a clutch to engage at the helm and it is a belt drive inside the unit on the wheel so it may not be a big issue to disengage the clutch in an emergency situation. :)
@05Cat287 жыл бұрын
Tacking is especially easy. You will love that part. I find it really helpful for whisker pole set up or any time you go forward. I think complacency is the biggest concern with them in tight or busy waters, it's easy to get distracted. Linking it through your plotter with the track function takes the guess work out of current set and drift.

Thanks for another video Alfi. When I finally installed my auto helm after waiting 2 years I was told you would wonder / wish why you had not done it earlier! I thought it was a fantastic opportunity for your viewers and also an obvious add on for you. The time and effort that goes into your videos is huge. Keep your head up! The artwork is not a mistake. How else would you advertise to people the option - it's their choice if they want to buy some or not. I think there is a remote app that works with the Raymarine if you have a newer chart plotter with wifi. sooo... you could maybe mount a tablet at the helm to view autopilot data...or use a chart plotter at the helm on a pod.
@lifeislikesailing7 жыл бұрын
You read my mind, I am looking at that possibility if I upgrade my chart plotter at the helm. The Seatalk cable system would also let all the systems talk to each other. :)
@allynonderdonk75777 жыл бұрын
In fact get a small chartplotter with wifi for inside the cabin. Very affordable. Get a Samsung Galaxy tab 10 for the helm with a waterproof case...$10-$15 on ebay...make sure it has a waterproof charging port...may need silicon. Will need to make or purchase a mount or a pod www.ebay.com/itm/Flat-Surface-Car-Mount-fits-Samsung-Galaxy-Tab-4-10-1-Tab-S-10-5-10-Tablets-/201846119038?hash=item2efef75a7e:g:BckAAOSwXYtYwHEo You can afford a SMALLEST CHEAPEST chartplotter with WIFI and large galaxy tablet for less than the cost of a large chartplotter. You can watch movies on the chartplotter at the helm if you use the tab instead of the chartplotter. Heck you could even mount two galaxy tab 10s for the price of a large chartplotter...and a wifi nas that can store movies and connect to the wifi network. Don't know about file sharing over a chartplotter though...you may need a wifi router or one of the wifi access boxes sold for raymarine, but I think it would work fine. You could roam around with thousands of movies at your fingertips. You could even add in a Wilson cell booster antenna and/or a wifi booster and have everything on the internet when available.
So many great options out there!! Thanks for sharing those! :)

Hey Alfi, I just installed a EV 100 wheel autopilot on my Alberg 35. I watched your video first and found it very helpful, Thanks for doing the video. I noticed that the electrical cable connector for 12V power on the wheel pilot motor drive, is a kind of flimsy, and could easily get broken, your set up is the same. I was worried about breaking this connector . So I reinforced this connector, and made it stronger, here is how I did it. I used a a empty gas line antifreeze bottle, they are 120 ml plastic containers, and have a long neck. I just sliced the plastic bottle open lengthwise, and cut the bottom off; then the container fit perfectly over the motor and electrical connector.👍👍👍 I secured it with white electrical tape. It’s much better. Thanks for your help.

Alfy I don't think I could have been so kind in my response to your critics. This video brought back lots of memories for me. I installed the same exact autopilot 3 years ago when I first got my Pearson 31. It works great but you really made the whole installation seem like a breeze. I remember stewing over where I was going to mount things and if I was going to have to get any more of those Seatalk wires. I think you will like the controller mounted where you put it for exactly the reasons you stated. It is great for tacking when short handed. I sanded True Blue's bottom last week in my T shirt. Tonight we are expecting 15 to 20 inches of snow. Guess winter has finally arrived!! Ron

Hi Chad, after using it for a bit in the current position I have decided to move it closer to the helm. I thought it wouldn't hurt to try it out in a location that already had a hole cut, but realized it is better to have it within arm's reach while I am helming. Hope that info helps.

You will love having an autopilot. On my first sail on my 'new' boat the tillerpilot mount disintegrated leaving me a 7 hours solo hand steering. Second day, the tillerpilot itself broke (another 7 hours solo). I now have a refurbished tillerpilot with a very strong mount and last October installed a Windvane steering system as well. Bliss.
@lifeislikesailing7 жыл бұрын
I really can't wait to get out cruising now that it is installed and ready to go! I can't believe I did so many years and so many miles without one! Glad you fixed yours and a wind vane system must be great to have as well!!

I find it interesting how some people view "capitalizing" as some form of evil or ethical failure. I find this an odd attitude as we all must capitalize ourselves in some way. There are no free rides. I am not in a position to be a direct supporter so I make sure I view each and every commercial offered to honor those who put effort into their sites. I also can't purchase artwork at this time as I have no place to put your photos, but I think they are excellent and worthy. If folks have gotten under your skin on this issue I am one to be a healing balm...keep up your excellent work. Some day I hope to purchase a sailboat. At the age of 65 I hope that time comes sooner than later. In the meantime I can learn and live my sailing life a bit vicariously through you and I deeply appreciate the quality of videography you offer and your stories. Sell on!

What was a ball park amount$ for the autopilot setup?

After taxes probably about $2400.00 CAD

Question , how do if find your follow up video ( I’m not the best at IT !) , and how do I see your art work !!
@johnpwmcgrath7 жыл бұрын
Is that a speaker next to your newly mounted control unit? It likely has a pretty strong permanent magnet in it. As for your art work, you have a talent that should be encouraged and supported through your sales. Haters are a very sad, angry bunch that want others to be miserable like them....you are a really good person and we are all lucky to have you sharing your life and experience with us. Keep up the amazing work! Thanks for all you do for us!!! John
@lifeislikesailing7 жыл бұрын
I don't plan on keeping the speaker there, but it didn't seem to be an issue for the auto pilot so far. Yes, it seems the haters will be negative no matter what you do. ha

I like your videos and the quality of your work. A lovely boat. Raymarine? Nah. The whole industry operates on NMEA 2000, but Raymarine keeps you captive with Seatalk. I hope you do well with the art. Blessings
@lifeislikesailing7 жыл бұрын
Ya it was a tough decision to go with Raymarine for that reason, but I decided that for the future instrument upgrades I need to make that Raymarine will work for this boat. Glad you enjoy the videos!
@simulacrae7 жыл бұрын
Wait, you're not allowed to mount any component of the auto helm close to VHF equipment? Haven't Raymarine heard of RF shielding? I mean I understand the heading sensor but logically the control unit wouldn't be affected.
@lifeislikesailing7 жыл бұрын
I had four manuals to read and it seemed that the 3ft rule applied to all four components. I'm going to be checking with Raymarine support about the possibility of mounting the control unit next to the VHF mic in the cockpit, but before I drill that hole using the pre-existing hole on the bulkhead made sense.
@wilfdarr7 жыл бұрын
Christopher Levin Shielded or not many electronics are extremity sensitive to RF interference today. I've been reading about how during the last Baja ha ha it was discovered that combinations or certain brands of LED mast head lights and certain brands of AIS are incompatible: It seems to have taken the industry by complete surprise, but you can't test your equipment with every brand of mast head light available. I suspect that this is an over abundance of caution, but in the event you find your particular brand of radio and this particular brand of autopilot incompatible, they don't want to be responsible for filling any holes you drilled in your boat to mount their system.

Two comments 1. We all appreciate your videos and most know the time and expense involved. Good for you on finding a way to augment you equipment. Remember the old fable about Esop. 2. When you turned your wheel around do you now steer like we do with a tiller (I know smart ass comment )

Artwork is an expression of emotion and experience, nothing wrong with that and BTW, you're very talented, which to some, they're simply envious. Projecting your talent to the world is an expression of Love. If you're able to be rewarded for your talent, it's a blessing! Finally, your videos have given me knowledge and inspiration to care more for my own boat, thanks.

Nice job with the autohelm. Keep doing what your doing....most sailing vloggers don't come close to your well produced shows. Your art work is an extension of your life and your sailing,,,,and it is quite wonderful. Like I said before, I am in the middle of remodeling my house and will wait till that's finished to order some of your prints. Be thinking also of the possibility of someone (me) being able to get an original piece of your art from you. (That is if I have any money left after this remodel ! lol) Take care,,Craig from S.C.

I think that negative criticism you've received isn't worth commenting - many have differing opinions all are entitled to them (considering how civil they are expressed). Feel confident that most of the responses you'll receive will be supportive of your position. If I have any spare cash I will try to purchase your one of your artworks - very well done.

Here is an idea. Do a video on the use of the new system. How to plot a corse....how to use the autopilot how to adjust and the interaction between the new devices. Real time. I don't think I have ever seen a video how to use the autopilot and plotter. You sailors all assume we non sailors know how do do this. Think about it. Love your videos and I agree life is like sailing.
@lifeislikesailing7 жыл бұрын
Yes, I mentioned that I will show how the system works when I get out next. Although, my chart plotter isn't synced with the autopilot as I haven't upgraded that part yet. Glad you enjoy the videos. :)
