The automatic life jackets have a little piece of chalk in them that dissolves when it contacts water. Than that opens a valve so the life jacket can inflate

When I had a houseboat, I'd run a life vest drill so everyone knew how to put on a vest"Just like putting on a coat & jerk on the cord to inflate it." I'd add"Anyone inflating the vest must wear it all day." but I really just had them wear it until we'd cleared the marina & I'd hand the steering over to a guest while I showed how to replace the CO2 cartridge & deflate the vest.

Great video. Which Onyx flotation jacket ( for kayaking) can be used with which CO2 pull cord inflatable life jacket? If you wanted the maximum safety/buoyancy option at sea, I am wondering if you could comfortably get two of these working together? or is the inflatable belt the only realistic option, for use with a flotation jacket?

I use a manual one for swimming. After five years the blow tube broke off so I bought another and tested the new one with the old and rusty C02 canister from the broken one. It inflated pronto once I pulled hard enough. It was less the force than to know which direction to pull in - away from the C02 canister mouth.

One note of caution: Self inflating life jackets SHOULD NEVER BE USED if a capsize could result in a person being trapped under or inside the craft. I know of at least two fatalities (in the UK) resulting from the above. Jacket inflated, trapped them against the craft & they drowned before they could deflate & swim out.

I'm guessing they advise you wear a standard lifejacket that doesn't depend on inflation, and hence has no risk of failure, but is bulkier to wear.

I think it’s for the awareness. If you’re unable to swim and process what’s happening and “climbing the ladder” to try and get to the surface you might not be thinking to reach down pull a tab and manually inflate the jacket if it’s not buoyant enough.

how do the ones that always hold the air work, the air is being contained in either the tank or the balloon yet only in the balloon does it float, how does that work?
@jameswood83892 жыл бұрын
When the air is in the tank it is compressed, so it has a much higher density. This means it is not buoyant. However, when it is inflated, the density of the air decreases as it has room to expand, so it becomes buoyant.

@user-fn2rt6lb1o Жыл бұрын
i imagine its got to do with things like device failure or being in an inflatable lifejacket far out to sea. I imagine also hypothermia. I agree if its drowned specifically it rules out hypothermia but just a thought.
@kerryobrien6110 Жыл бұрын
If they are floating in choppy waves too long, they can still take in too much water and drown.
@apackwestbound5946 Жыл бұрын
Sometimes people are also injured/incapacitated when they fall overboard (shock, blunt trauma, bleed out, burns among other causes). Not all life jackets are designed to turn a person face up and/or face out of the water if unconscious or incapacitated. Hypothermia is also fatal and the life jacket offers little to no protection against the effects of hypothermia. Life jackets are an important safety item and should be worn. My reply was an attempt to answer the question why some perish while wearing the jacket and NOT a reason/excuse/justification to not wear one.
@donalain69 Жыл бұрын
@@apackwestbound5946 thanks for the response. That seems to be a valid argument. Probably the vest doesnt protect from sharks too... but i hope i never have to test that myself.

Would a co2 tube need to be checked yearly if it had not ever been used?? Id like to purchase one to use, only in the event of an emergency.
@ccyn0423 жыл бұрын
Yes, the co2 cylinders have expiration dates, and the whole vest needs regular inspection. This includes manually inflating the jacket to make sure the bladder holds air, checking for corrosion on the cylinder, wear on the jacket itself, etc. USCG has a document called “we’re not inflating the importance of this message” that goes over some key things to look for when inspecting an inflatable life jacket. PS Re: using it only for emergencies, I try to keep in mind that emergencies are never planned. Best to have it on at all times when on the water.

The video says to store in a cool dry place. Why can’t I keep it with my boat?
@OnyxOutdoor4 жыл бұрын
Exposure to humidity and high heat can break down the material in the water soluble bobbins on the automatic inflatable life jackets. Keeping inflatable life jackets stored in boat lockers and compartments increases the chances of premature and/or unintentional inflation.

In regards to the automatic, what happens if it rains really heavy?
@NathanH1724 жыл бұрын
It has to be under water to a specific depth before it activates to prevent accidental automatic inflation.
@nolanbrahosky59084 жыл бұрын
It works by pressure of a gauge being submerged
@ccyn0423 жыл бұрын
There are different types of inflation mechanisms. Some are compressed fiber that melts away in water to trigger inflation, and others are hydrostatic and only inflate when submerged to a certain pressure. Hydrostatic tend to be more expensive but they’re less likely to inflate accidentally in a storm etc.

inflatable jackets have a probability of failure, would you risk your life by that, or just ensure that you don't put your life to chance and just wear a standard life vest? plus the maintenance of inflatables is too much, I chose the standard one.

Was lucky that he had a friend to help him but without that friend, he would have probably died. Keep safe on the water.. Check out sea kayaking level 50 type 2 pfd's.. Allot of fishing kayakers I know wear them offshore and the offshore fishing comps I been to they will not allow people to use the gas pfd's in the comp because they know how risky they can be.
