No need to feel embarrassed. When a stranger realizes that you know even a little of their language, especially when traveling, sometimes that little bit might be all they need at the time. As a sign language interpreter, when I'm able to assist a Deaf person even when I'm not on the job, it's a pleasure. They appreciate whatever you do, because it's generally a lot more than what others around you can do at that moment.
