A couple of references you might not have picked up: the guy who offers to help carry a crucifix and gets stuck with it is a parody of the story of the guy (Simon of Cyrene) who helped Jesus carry his cross; the bit where everyone is shouting "I'm Brian" is a parody of the climax of the film Spartacus (directed by Kubrick).

Speaking of a "higher budget" the film actually had a problem with that because the studio withdraw their funding due to the cotroversial subject. So what ended up happening was that almost on a whim they showed the script to George Harrison, and he put up his own money, 3 million, on the basis that he wanted to see the movie.

The controversy over this film was bananas (in the US and UK). The Pythons had debates with religious leaders on TV (you can find them on YT, I believe). But here's the rub, none of the religious leaders' arguments held up _because they refused to see the film!_ 🤣 They had no clue how wrong they were in their criticisms. It was simply embarrassing. It just went to prove a number of the points made in the film. 🤦🏼♂️

Go, I've seen the full movie countless times - and it's such fun seeing that it still hits with a new audience. So many classic moments. I think my favourite moment will always be Michael Palin as Pilate, when the guards started laughing about "Biggus Dickus". There's these two who barely can hold it in - and then he steps behind them... Not the "Incontinentia Buttocks" joke - that's fine too - but what kills me each time is the look on Pilates face before that. When he watches the two guards and suddenly gets this mean "I'll get them!" look. And then, in a completely "harmless" voice goes: "He has a beautiful wife, you know?" I'm still not 100% sure, how to exactly read this scene, in the altogether way Pilate acts it doesn't really make sense, because before and after he's outraged people laugh at his fwiend's name and doesn't get what's supposed to be so funny. But all of a sudden he becomes all cunning and mean about it... Michael Palin's acting is just beautiful. :)

Monty Python are HUGE and for good reason. Probably the most successful comedy act the World's ever seen and definitely the biggest from this country. Their worldwide success is pretty much unmatched. They all went on to have highly successful careers after Monty Python too. Their influence on comedy has been immense. They inspired generations of comedians and comedy writers and effectively revolutionised British comedy. Especially in tv and film. All highly intelligent guys, some of whom met at Oxford and some at Cambridge. They loved absurdism and surrealism, as well as outright silliness but there was nearly always a thread of real profundity running through their work.

*Meaning of Life* used to be my favorite Monty Python movie because I thought it had the funniest jokes. Then I thought *Life of Brian* was my favorite because it's a fantastic, insightful piece of satire. Now I think *Holy Grail* is my favorite because it subverts so many movie making and story telling conventions. I've heard *Holy Grail* described as an "anti-movie," and I agree with that assessment. I can't think of another movie which is ultimately a joke on the audience itself.
@m.hunterstevie20812 жыл бұрын
The two similar jokes I’ve always loved in this movie that were skipped here are about the idea of trying to threaten someone more after already sentencing them to death… trying to get the guy about to be stoned to stop saying Jehovah: “You’re only making it worse for yourself.” Making it worse? How could it get any worse? And the joking guy on his way to the crucifixion being told to shut up or he’ll get in trouble: “Oh dear… do you mean I might have to give up being crucified in the afternoon?” 🤣 Holy Grail and Life of Brian do represent two parts of my life: as a teenager, I loved Holy Grail a lot more as it felt a lot more quotable and my friend group were always trying to make each other laugh dropping those references in conversation. Getting older, I find I like Life of Brian more because of the humor being more social commentary while still being silly and quotable.

Your post-film analysis was totally fair; Python IS exhausting, especially on a first viewing. On repeated viewings you can relax into it, and then you notice all kinds of other things. You were TOTALLY right about the cast really shining more in this one. Michael Palin (one of Python's most versatile performers) and Terry Jones (Brian's mother, the hermit) are WAY more featured in this one than "Holy Grail" and it makes all the difference. Palin, especially: Biggus Dikkus, the guy hanging in the dungeon, the guy organizing the crucifixion, "Big Nose", he's one of the prophets sermonizing, he's one of the gang, and I'm probably missing some others. He's just hitting it out of the park in this one. The satire in the movie is so sharp, it just gets better and better, especially the more you know about history and religion. Anyways, been almost two years since I discovered your channel and have been wanting you guys to check this out......THANK YOU!!!! The laughing jag at the stuttering guards was priceless! The alien scene is a jab at the concept of Deus Ex Machina (God in the machine). Deus ex machina was extensively used in Greek litterature, whenever a hero was in mortal danger but there was more story to tell with him, he would be saved by a god appearing and taking him away from danger. Today, it's used for lazy writting, for example the heroes are in a remote place surrounded by enemies and you don't know how to continue the story so you have the rescue arriving in the nick of time, exactly at the very place. The monthy python crew pushed the concept to absurd limits with aliens saving Brian from a certain death. What makes the scene so hilarious is how you absolutely do not expect it and the absurdity of it is just so funny. These guys were truly comedic geniuses. Needless to say (about the movie) that it did ruffle some feathers among some christian institutions, especially the singing on the cross at the end. Python got a lot of heat but John Cleese famously went on TV to defend the movie saying that they weren't making fun of jesus but doing a criticism of fanatism in organised religions. A fantastic christmas movie that people should react to is the anime Tokyo Godfathers by Satoshi Kon (Perfect blue, Paprika) Do watch it, it's really great.
