Jonathan Edwards credited Dutch Reformed Pastor Theodore Frelinghuysen with beginning the Great Awakening in New Jersey. Reverend Edwards credited Frelinghuysen upon his discussion with Gilbert Tennent: "But this shower of Divine blessing has been yet more extensive. There was no small degree of it in some part of the Jerseys, as I was informed when I was at New York, (in a long journey I took at that time of the year for my health) by some people of the Jerseys, whom I saw, especially the Reverend WIlliam Tennent, a minister, who seemed to have such things much at heart, told me of a very great awakening of many in a place called the Mountains [sic.], under the ministry of one Mr. Cross; and of a very considerable revival of religion in another place under the ministry of his brother, Reverend Mr. Gilbert Tennent; and also at another place, under the ministry of a very pious young gentleman, a Dutch minister, who name as i remember was Freelinghouse [sic]."

I don't understand the scull tombstone.

Puritans frequently used skulls on their tombstones. Their purpose was to give a stark reminder of the reality of death, and to call the viewer to ready himself for his own death. Thanks for watching.

I think it's very unfortunate, misleading, and unfair that a picture of John Wesley appears on the screen when the gentleman is saying that many preachers of the time believed that one didn't even need to be saved to be a preacher. Anyone who has studied Wesley knows that he neither had a works-based gospel, nor did he minimize the importance of personal salvation. In fact, the opposite is true of Wesley. Again, it is profoundly unfortunate that Wesley is disrespected in this otherwise good video.

David, Thanks for your comment. You are correct, Wesley was not one of the "Old Lights" and his picture should not have appeared at that point in the video. However, Wesley did have significant theological problems in his doctrines of atonement and Christian perfection. These links are helpful in explaining some of those issues: thepuritanpost.tumblr.com/post/579536729/why-john-wesley-flopped-on-the-atonement-and-maybe-more gbgm-umc.org/umw/wesley/perfection.stm gbgm-umc.org/Umhistory/Wesley/plainaccount.stm For further study you may be interested in the two volume biography of George Whitefield by Arnold Dallimore.

I am a Wesleyan-Arminian, one who is very familiar with Wesley's work. Believe me, I love George Whitefield but I am certainly not a Calvinist. I disagree with your assessment of Wesley but even if I didn't, it still wouldn't help with some of the terrible and unbiblical doctrines in TULIP. Either way, you should acknowledge that putting up Wesley's picture at the moment you did is misleading and totally inaccurate. In your first paragraph you say I am right but then you go on to bash Wesley in a topic that is not relevant to what is being said when his picture is shown. I am beginning to get fed up with Calvinists acting like George Whitefield was THE man behind the great awakening, as if John Wesley was not being used by God at the same time. In fact, I will actually argue that Wesley was a better theologian than Whitefield. Why take these cheep shots at Wesley when Whitefield LOVED him and asked him to preach his funeral? Have you not read what even Spurgeon said of Wesley despite his disagreements with him? I am adamantly calling you out on your (intentional?) lack of reverence for this old soldier who did matter, even if Calvinists want to rewrite history. You are wronging a brother and I am offended.
