Of course the second story, The horrific story, was the real story. To get through this traumatic event and live the rest of his life, he had to believe in the tiger story. It mentally gave him some way to deal. The island was a somewhat solace and tempting , it was shaped like his mom lying on her back, but it was certain death. Giving up. It was better compared to the turbulent sea, but something was telling him, the tiger was telling him to not give up. Go back in the boat and keep trying to get back to find land. Once he’s did, he was able to free the tiger from his Soul. He didn’t need to have the tiger in him now. But it was bitter sweet bc the tiger is what gave him strength and courage that kept him alive. One of my fav movies. Great reaction!

@@MrGittz There isn’t a question of what story is true, the adult Pi asks the writer “which story do you prefer?” of course, the horrific story is true, who would make that up? His story changing all the characters in to animals was faith in God, and a way of psychologically, dealing with the aftermath of a traumatic situation that happened in his life so he can deal, living the rest of his life as a normal person again.

My wife and I were just speechless when we left the movie theater after watching this, then we talked about it for an hour. We had no idea what it was about, so we pretty much had the same type of reaction. Just a great movie. Like Mrs. Movies said, it works both ways. Either story could be true, and both are amazing stories; one dark and morbid, the other inspirational.

I like to believe the theory that Richard Parker represented his hatred. Theres many stories in which survivors are kept alive by what we would consider “negative” emotions. Pi tried to control Richard Parker/his anger, he failed. Pi tried to dominate Richard Parker/his anger, he failed. Finally Pi learned that the only way was to co-exist with Richard Parker/his anger. His anger kept him alive, but once he landed to shore, there was no need for his anger no more, that’s why Richard Parker leaves.

The main reason for the aspect ratio change during the flying fish scene, was to help accentuate the 3D. If you look close, you can see the fish "break out" of the new aspect ratio, to make it seem like they were literally flying out of the screen

Richard Parker is a name always associated with cannibalism.. so him being the Tiger, the scene when he was 1st time eating "biscuits" and somehow he was vomiting, you know what's up.. and my theory about the Carnivorous island is just the metaphor of his situation.. his boat is a little island of cannibalism and also you guys notice the island is shaped like a person, which some people theorized that its his mothers rotten corpse that he was eating.. maybe he was eating it and when he saw his mothers tooth then he snap back to his senses and immediately thought he have to leave that "island" which he don't want it to be his last moments..

This was amazing in a big 3D theater screen. The flying fish sequence changed aspect ratios, but it also simulated a 3D effect by having the fish come "out" over the black bars. It's a really cool effect that wouldn't work in a lot of other movie scenes.

Every time I hear you guys say “Tiger” when talking about it afterwards I had the Eye of the Tiger song play in my head, if we go with the version where Pi metaphorically is the Tiger. Because he had the eye of the Tiger. I prefer the version where there was a real tiger. Losing his family on the freighter was horrific but somehow even more so if in fact the cook killed his mom and had turned to cannibalism. It’s somehow worse when it’s human beings causing the horror. I loved this movie and when Pi wakes up to a doldrums and the Pacific water is smooth as glass is probably one of the most beautiful visuals I’d ever seen, helped I watched it on a 4K screen (years ago when 4K had just come out as a resolution). Something hyper-real about that moment.😅

I think if you go with the more "realistic" story, then the island with meercats is actually his mother's dead body and those meercats are the maggots, acid pool for being gastric acid, the island looks like a person lying down. So he is basically feeding on her corpse to survive.

I mean it's ok if people want to see what they want to see. That is what film is all about. If you get something good out a film but it isn't what the writer or director intended that is ok. But legit the True story is the one he tells in the hospital to the Japanese men. It's pretty obvious when he asks the writer in his house which does he want to believe: the story of tragedy and trauma, where people (including himself) were their worst? Or the story of hope where a boy and a tiger survived together. Pi basically tells him he created a fantasy because he couldn't bare to relive the trauma.

As far as I figure everything up to the 34:20 strange trip is real and half of everything after that is real, everything on the boat or raft is real because he's still on them in the ocean but I doubt everything he sees from this point on he's an unreliable narrator I don't even trust the Island, we see that same person shape before the trip starts. Obviously the story without the animals on the boat is the true story. We saw on multiple occasions why the tiger isn't real. 1) the tiger was able to pull a goat thru the cage (fully intact) despite it being anatomically impossible. 2) the hyena came out from under the tarp even though that's where the tiger was supposed to be as well. Later on, when we see Pi undo the tarp, we can clearly see that there should have been no space where the Tiger could share with the Hyena. In real life if a Tiger and a Hyena were that close to each other they would undoubtedly fight each other, yet there were no signs of any struggle - which is also weird if you consider the fact that the Hyena and the Tiger were both shown to be quite opportunistic and aggressive as the story progressed. The Hyena kills the Zebra and Orangutan and the Tiger kills the Hyena and makes multiple attempts to attack Pi. His story contradicts itself. 3) The Tiger was never shown to eat the Hyena, Orangutan or the Zebra. Even though the Zebra dead right there, the Tiger kept going after Pi and even ate the rat Pi threw to him. Even though it was shown to be hungry, it never ate the Zebra which is just not realistic. I also don't think that Pi told this story because he needed it to keep him from going insane. I think he did it because he wanted to spare other people from the true story which was much more dark and kind of unnecessary. If you watch the interviews the author of the book does, this is a much more plausible theory. The author WANTS to believe in faith. He didn't make Pi tell thay story because he wanted him to not go insane. He wanted Pi to tell thay story because it introduced you to faith/God.

He had to become the tiger to survive, remember when he killed the fish and that almost destroying him, but he transformed into the tiger as a necessity to survive and do things beyond his own character. The true story is the cook, sailor and mother but for his trauma he created a fantasy to justify his actions and keep his innocence.

Thanks for making me laugh right out of the gate. This film draws a lot of similarities with the themes of the film Big Fish (using stories to entertain when the truth might be more mundane or difficult) which is funny as the book that this film is based on was published two years before Big Fish on September 11th 2001 (but the book that Big Fish was based on came out in 1998).

See, if you believe the Tiger story than you believe in God. The tiger story was the Miracle. I read that in the story a tiger was found dead along the Mexican pacific coast days later. So, the tiger was real. It’s just what I read about the Book. Not sure if it’s accurate. I hope so.

Terrific movie! Sad that the special effects company that did all the CGI went bankrupt before the movie even won all the awards. (That is a whole story in itself, worth looking into. I am not going to fill a page of comments about it.)

The film was great. The book, as is usually the case, was even better.

This, up to the date of this film, was the most impressive CGI. Nothing but the boat and the props Pi held were practical. EVERYTHING else was CGI. He was just on a sound stage in a small pool surrounded my blue screens. Unfortunately the effects company that did the movie went bankrupt. They put everything they had into this movie. I think this is why "modern" CGI gets so much flak. We have seen what CAN be done when done right. Unfortunately the amount of time and money it takes to make something of this quality doesn't allow the big hollywood studios to crank out a new billion dollar movie every year. So they cut corners. Cut budget. Cut FX time leading to crunch and therefore sloppy work.

Great stuff. Loved this movie. But the best part is when your daughter comes in and the applause starts.
