The reason they give Imotep the 'power' of immortality is to prolong his suffering. The scarabs would eat him quickly. The punishment was to have him constantly alive and awake, devoured over and over forever. Should he be freed, he would be able to act, and he was already a powerful sorcerer. Immortality was just the cherry on top.

It's also to keep anyone willing to 'resurrect' these evil-doers from doing it, I mean, who would knowing mess with a figure like that? Same as with the "cursed" Emperor's tombs, they were place to detract tomb raiders and thieves from entering them, those curses have a reason to be.

You wouldn't think a name like "The Mummy" would have so much well-written and beautifully-timed humor in the film that makes you smile, but it does! My (now deceased) wife, Debbie, and I viewed this one upon its original theatrical release, and since I currently own the DVD trilogy along w/ the Tom Cruise version and all of the 1930s through '50s franchise issues, this probably bewrays my strong interest in the series. Incidentally, my spouse worked for a time @ a CPA firm in which Brendan Fraser was a client and she acquired his autograph, so that's one of my inherited (and somewhat prized) possessions of hers.

@@klingkong9790 I really wanted to. The whole idea of bringing back all the Universal classic monsters in their own movies sounded awesome to me. The problem with The Mummy and the Dark Universe as a whole is that they dumped so much money into them. You don't need $200,000,000 budget and Tom Cruise to make good movies. Horror movies are notoriously easy to make for a small budget which is one of the reasons why it's the most profitable genre of movies. If they had made them into smaller HORROR movies instead of big dumb action movies with immense budgets than it probably would have worked out. I mean, that's precisely what they did with The Invisible Man shortly after The Mummy flopped, it made money and was a critical success.

It's a series of inscriptions telling the reader what rituals and spells they must do in order to pass through the various trials on the way to the afterlife. And it's not actually a bound tome or collection of scrolls. It's actually carved and painted directly onto the tomb walls.

I also watched the Dragon Emperor's Tombs when they released it in theaters, I think in West Virginia when it was released but it didn't have quite the same feel to it as the other two and I felt very disappointed by it, the quality, the story, the spark just wasn't there… But yeah, as a kid my to go movies were those two Mummy movies, 2002's The Time Machine and the Back To The Future trilogy, absolutely loved them and still.

My own explanation for the weird "granting" of power is this: Imhotep needed to be punished in the extreme because he attempted to resurrect the dead, which is dangerous to the living, and blasphemous to the gods of the dead. Because balance must always be maintained, the extreme punishment had to balanced with a dangerous set of caveats; and because the punishers are themselves transgressing in order to inflict punishment, they have to condemn themselves.

You guys are great, truly. This is one of the best movies ever made. Also, about the why they cursed him. His powers are a consequence of the punishment, this is why it was never done. They knew if they ever punished someone in this horrible way and the individual were ever resurrected, the curse would happen. The Medji took this risk as they felt Imhotep deserved such torment before death for killing the pharo and trying to bring back Anck-Su-Namun. Fun fact: Brenden did all of his own stunts. However, this also includes the hanging scene, which sadly was not a stunt per say. The stunt went wrong and he was actually hung for a few moments until someone realized what was happening. The part when they come out of the river, there is some very discrete CGI on Rachel Weisz's nightie. It was a little see-through when they saw the dailies

4:18 Canopic jars stored the intestines, the liver, the stomach, and the lungs. They depict five in the movie, but there were only ever four(one for each of the four sons of the god Horus, whose roles were to protect these particular organs). The heart was always left in place, since they believed it was the seat of intelligence and the personality. The brain was believed to have no important function at all, so it was simply discarded!

The actual stunt with the noose is done with a harness using a double for the wide shots. The close ups are Fraser but the rope got too tight for too long and he got choked out. He was not seriously injured nor did he require CPR. It was just a simple blood choke, very common, however, he did get fed up and walked off set for the day.

Funny fact , Egyptian Scarab eats undigested stuff from herbivores poop , it's not a meat eater . Looks similar and has some same actors than Stargate , both movies had same guy as Egypt expert and all texts were correct in those books , only not written in correct direction from right to left , also mummies had only 4 jars , 5th one with lion head does not belong to the group .

The actor who played the mummy, Arnold Vosloo, was in both G.I. Joe movies, Hard Target, Darkman 2, Darkman 3, 1492: Conquest of Paradise, and Blood Diamond. You should any of those to your watch list, if you haven't seen them yet.
