Life on The Falls Road, Belfast City, Northern Ireland 1969

Over on the Falls Road, Catholics Peter Fusco, Martin Blake and their families speak to Kevin O’Kelly.
They discuss religious differences, the split in the Unionist Party and Protestant neighbours and co-workers. One of the men demonstrated his openness to other religions when he said that he didn’t care what religion his co-workers had, stating “I don’t give a hoot if he is a Muslim. He can work away with me. I am quite happy to know him and be friends with him”.
They also talk about the disadvantages of a thirty two county Ireland and the influence of the Catholic Church on politics. The topics covered are similar to the discussion that took place on the Shankill Road between O’Kelly and a Protestant family.

When the young man refers to “the real Troubles” I guess he’s referring to the 1920s or 1930s?

Both. Hundreds died across the 1920s and 1930s in Belfast. Lots of sectarian murder and a lot written about it if you look for it, but in the grand scheme of Irish history, it's sandwiched between the Irish Civil War and The Troubles of 1969-1998 and thus forgotten.

It was crazy - different religions?? They were all Christians. They were both Christian denominations!!! The one Holy Bible, the one Nicene Creed, the one Risen Lord Jesus, came to rescue everybody and bring all people together as children of God. How we humans saw difference and turned it into fear and hate is a mystery.Such rational and reasonable people. How did it go so wrong?
